DISTRICT NEWS
Superintendent's Message
As we move into a busy fall season, I want to share a few important updates about how KSD 140 communicates with our families and community. Staying connected is a priority for us, and we are always looking for ways to make information more accessible and timely. Below you’ll find highlights about the tools we use to share news, updates, and resources with you.

D140 Introduces Diligent for Board of Education Updates
D140 is now using Diligent to make Board of Education information more accessible to our community. Through this new platform, families and community members can easily find board agendas, meeting summaries, schedules, and member details in one convenient location. Diligent is mobile-friendly, allowing the public to view materials anytime, anywhere. It also enhances transparency by keeping both past and upcoming documents organized and easy to navigate. With this upgrade, staying informed and connected to the work of the Board has never been easier. Explore our new Diligent Board of Education platform.
As always, thank you for staying engaged and connected with KSD 140. Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
Sincerely,
Dan Callaghan

STUDENT AND STAFF SPOTLIGHT
McAuliffe’s Million Minute Reading Challenge
McAuliffe Elementary is setting its sights high this year with a schoolwide reading goal: one million minutes! At the September Board of Education meeting, Principal Jim Hanley shared a video highlighting the new initiative and the many ways students are being encouraged to read for fun and growth.
Motivations and milestones:
- Weekly Top Bean Trophy for the class with the most minutes
- Monthly prizes for top readers in each grade
- Raffle tickets for every 50 minutes read (end-of-year winners pour beans on Mr. Hanley!)
Together, the Million Minute Reading Challenge is designed to build excitement, foster a love of reading, and unite the school community around a shared goal. With every page turned, McAuliffe students are proving that small daily habits can add up to something truly extraordinary.
D140 Band Performs at Andrew Football Pregame
Over 150 Grissom and Prairie View band members joined the VJA Marching Band, playing "Everything Is Awesome" from "The LEGO Movie" and the VJA fight song at the Andrew High School varsity football game on Friday, September 5. Afterward, students performed musical chants and cheers from the bleachers and enjoyed watching the VJA Marching Band’s halftime show.

D140 Middle School Sports

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Fire Department Gives Fire Safety Tips to D140 Students
As part of their National Fire Prevention Week campaign, our local fire departments visit KSD 140 elementary schools in September and October to educate our students about all aspects of fire safety and prevention. This year's theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” The campaign emphasizes safe charging practices, including the use of manufacturer-approved cords, charging on hard surfaces, and removing batteries once fully charged to prevent fires from overheating or experiencing thermal runaway.
