The Fowler Weekly
November 14-18
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Fowler Family,
I’m sorry I was out of the building last week. It is incredibly difficult to leave the building as schools really do function as small cities and have many moving parts. I do stay in close contact with our associate principals and front office secretaries, so I keep a strong pulse on things and provide feedback even when I’m gone.
For those of you who have students in college, you know how fast time flies! I now have a high school Junior, and we spent the earlier days last week looking at colleges. I also spent the weekend completing a bucket list goal I set for myself last year by crossing the finish line in an Ironman Triathlon. I attached some pictures and one of my daughters was clearly not too excited to be kissed by a dad who just rode 112 sweaty miles on a bicycle. (Sorry Brooklyn)
We just completed Quarter 1 and I ask that you all please review grades and attendance in ParentVue. We see a lot of correlation between on-time behavior and at-task behavior in classes. Much like my long race, focus, planning, and goals are needed to find success. Our goal is to prepare students for high school and setting goals and finding time to study or “train” the brain is needed. I would like all students to spend time on their “MyPath” lessons in iReady every weekend and as possible during the week nights. Math and literacy are keys to success in school and carving out training time for those elements will build brain muscle and help students finish their academic race. These tools are there for independent study and will help your child find greater success regardless of current ability.
Be well,
Andy
HAPPENINGS
Our Family Partnership Days (formerly Parent-Teacher Conferences) begin this week and will wrap up the week of November 21. The majority of our Family Partnership Meetings will take place in person.
Thursday evening, November 17, meetings are by appointment only and in person. If you have a scheduled appointment, you will receive an email with details confirming the date and time the day before your meeting. This communication will also include the teacher’s google meet to use if you chose a virtual meeting.
Monday, November 21, from 4:30-7:30 pm and Tuesday, November 22, 7:30-11:30 am the meetings are in person and will be held arena style in the Commons and Gym. At arena style meetings 6th grade teachers will be available in the Commons, 7th and 8th grade teachers, as well as most elective teachers, will be set up in the Gym. There are a few exceptions which will be posted in the Commons. Teacher spaces will be labeled with signs to assist you in locating those you wish to see. We do encourage students to attend with their parents/guardians, but it is not required. We also recommend that you bring a list of your child’s teachers so that you know who to visit.
Arena style meetings are first come, first serve. We do ask that you limit your conversations to no longer than 10 minutes so that all families have the same opportunity to meet with teachers. If you find that you need more time, please set up a separate meeting time with the teacher.
The afternoon of Tuesday, November 22 meetings are by appointment only and in person. If you have a scheduled appointment, you will receive an email with details confirming the date and time the day before your meeting. This communication will also include the teacher’s google meet to use if you chose a virtual meeting.
Our Lost & Found pile has grown into quite an impressive pile, alright, mountain! Clothing, lunchboxes, stuffed animals, backpacks, water bottles, shoes, etc., are placed in the Commons Lost & Found near the Courtyard doors. If the item is small, and particularly of value, it will be turned in to the Main Office. Items such as phones and airpods are labeled with the date and location they were found. If your child is missing something, please remind them of these two places to check for their lost items. The building will be open during the arena style Family Partnership Meetings, this would be a perfect time to check out the pile yourself!
Friday, November 18, all students who participate in an Affinity Group - BSU, LGBT, MEChA, MENA or PIA - are invited to participate in the Affinity Group Friendsgiving beginning after school. See more details below:
We do not normally put this information out quite this early, but with our temperatures last week and snowflakes appearing here and there on the weather apps, we want to remind you what the process is in case of inclement weather. In the event of an emergency, which can include weather, the district communicates with families using one or more of the following ways:
FlashAlert – Free subscription service that alerts subscribers via email, cell phone, or mobile app https://www.flashalert.net/signup/
Tigard-Tualatin SD mobile app: Alerts will be sent to the mobile app, which can be downloaded through google play or apple stores.
District-generated email, text, or calls through Blackboard Connect – the email or phone numbers you provided at your student's enrollment are the contacts we will use to notify you of inclement weather and urgent notifications.
District and school web pages: Inclement weather and urgent notifications will be posted as an alert on all pages, https://www.ttsdschools.org
Social Media – You can find Tigard-Tualatin School District on Twitter and Facebook:
https://twitter.com/TigardTualSD ⬪ https://www.facebook.com/TTSDSchools
It is crucial that we have your most updated phone numbers, email addresses, and emergency contact information. If you need to make changes please reach out to fowleroffice@ttsd.k12.or.us or by calling (503)431-5000.
Reminder: please call absences into the Attendance Line: (503)431-5021.
This is a bilingual line and messages can be left anytime day or night. You may also email our attendance secretary Abbey Gambill at agambill@ttsd.k12.or.us.
Also, If you need to pick your student up early, please call the office prior to your arrival, and we will do our best to have your student waiting for you. “Prior to” can be days before, the day before, the same day or on your way. You are always welcome to leave the information on our 24 hour Attendance Line (503)431-5021, as we pick up those messages first thing each morning. We do require that you come into the Main Office and sign your student out. It is a safety issue. We will always take students in, but want to make sure that we know who they are leaving with.
FALCONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
A Fowler student will be performing in The Portland Ballet's production of The Enchanted Toyshop on Thanksgiving weekend. Iris Perkins, in 7th grade, will be performing as a Matrushka Doll. She has been dancing for nine years.
The magic begins when two children are left behind in a toyshop, and the Blue Fairy brings to life a parade of dancing dolls to entertain the guests. Choreographed specifically for the world-class academy by John Clifford, Toyshop showcases various skill levels and international dance styles. Pinocchio, playing cards and poodles are all part of the fast-paced fun. Since its premiere in 2003, Toyshop has become TPB's signature showpiece.
Four concerts will be performed Thanksgiving weekend at Lincoln Performance Hall, 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 26-27. Tickets start at $10. More information at theportlandballet.org or 503-452-8448 ext. 106.
Way to go, Iris! Fowler is proud of you!
BASIC NEEDS
At Tigard-Tualatin we believe in supporting the whole child and family. We want to make sure that our families have the resources they need for students to learn and grow. The information on this questionnaire will help our school better meet the needs of our school community through identifying both those who need support and potential donors within our community.
Please fill out one per family and only apply to one school. We would appreciate that you only apply to the school where your youngest child attends.
If you have any questions, reach out to our Family Partnership Advocate Ana Patlan Gutierrez 503-431-5054.
We need every family to complete this brief survey by November 23
As we collect basic needs information for our school, we would also like to share additional community resources that can support our families during this time. Here is a list of resources. We will continue to add resources to this document as we find them. If you have any questions, reach out to our Family Partnership Advocate Ana Patlan Gutierrez 503-431-5054.
PSO
There is a PSO Meeting this Thursday, November 17, 6:30pm. And it’s virtual! As always, all are invited! If you’re unable to attend the in-person PSO meetings, this might be the perfect time to join us!
