Student Success in School and Beyond
Dear Archuleta School District Community,
As we move further into the school year, I want to share some of the progress we're making as a district, what we're learning from our results, and where we're focusing our efforts this year.
We have a lot to celebrate. Across several important measures, we're seeing evidence that our collective work is making a difference for students. At the same time, we know there is still important work ahead to ensure every student has the opportunities and support they need to succeed.
Our strategic plan continues to guide our work, with three priorities at the center of our efforts this year:
High-Quality Instruction for All Students: Strengthening classroom instruction through shared instructional practices, teacher coaching, and professional development.
Grade-Level Standards and Curriculum: Ensuring students have access to rigorous, grade-level learning through curriculum improvements, instructional support, and professional learning.
Student Engagement: Improving attendance and creating learning environments where students feel connected, challenged, and ready to learn.
These priorities are closely connected. When students are engaged in school, supported by strong relationships, and challenged by high-quality instruction, we create the conditions for both academic achievement and long-term success.
We're seeing encouraging progress in student achievement. In 2026, 49% of students met grade-level expectations in math, compared with 32% in 2022. In Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, that figure increased from 53% to 67% over the same period.
Our most recent state assessments also showed strong student growth. For three consecutive years, students in grades 3–8 have demonstrated growth at or above the state average in both English Language Arts and math. At the high school level, our average SAT scores exceeded state averages in both reading and writing and math for the first time in five years. All ASD schools earned a Performance rating, and our district remains Accredited.
We all know that academic achievement in school is a really important measure. But we also want to look at what students are actually doing with what they learned at ASD after graduation.
One of our most encouraging indicators is the growing number of students pursuing opportunities beyond high school. In 2022, just 24% of ASD students had earned a career and technical education (CTE) credential or higher degree, enlisted in the military, or enrolled in a postsecondary program by the fall following graduation. As of 2025, 61% of ASD students had achieved one of these milestones, exceeding the state average.
We're also seeing significant growth in the number of ASD students pursuing college and CTE opportunities after high school:
The percentage of ASD students enrolling in four-year institutions increased from 20% in 2022 to 45% in 2025, exceeding the state average.
The percentage of ASD students enrolling in CTE institutes grew from 0% in 2022 to 12% in 2025, also exceeding the state average.
It's encouraging to see more students choosing to continue their education, develop new skills, and pursue opportunities after high school. These are important signs that we're helping students build the confidence, knowledge, and skills to take on new challenges.
Our progress reflects the collective efforts of our teachers, staff, students, families, and community. Our results show we're moving in the right direction, and we'll continue building on what's working and adapting where improvement is needed.
Thank you for your continued support of Archuleta School District and our students.

Seeking Volunteers for Artificial Intelligence Task Force
Are you interested in how artificial intelligence intersects with education? ASD is forming a dedicated AI Task Force to explore the relationship between ASD and AI, with a specific focus on strategies to manage, guide, and leverage this evolving technology in the future.
We are seeking a diverse mix of educators, parents, and students representing various backgrounds to join this voluntary, high-impact group. The AI Task Force will be capped at 12 participants to ensure meaningful collaboration. There will be a mix of in-person and digital collaboration.
If you are passionate about AI and helping set the vision for our district, we want your voice at the table! Interested in participating? Please contact Missy Lee (mlee@pagosa.k12.co.us) by November 13.
Join the District Accountability Committee (DAC)
Archuleta School District is seeking parents and community members interested in serving on the District Accountability Committee (DAC). The DAC brings together parents and school representatives to provide recommendations to the Board of Education on district spending priorities, improvement plans, and charter schools. The committee also works to strengthen parent engagement and ensure diverse perspectives are represented in district decision-making.
The next DAC meeting will be Tuesday, December 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs Middle School library.
This year, the district is alternating monthly meetings between School Accountability Committees (SAC) and the DAC. SAC meetings will take place in November and January, with DAC meetings in December and February.
Interested in getting involved? Contact Amanda Schick at aschick@pagosa.k12.co.us to learn more about serving on the DAC. You can also share your input with the committee.
Student Spotlights
A group of San Juan Mountain School students participated in the Runway for Rise earlier this month. The participants were tasked with creating a piece of fashion, using nothing more than recycled products, objects found in nature, and one garment which was thrifted. The team contributed to the overall fundraising of over $110,000 to help support victims of domestic violence in Archuleta County.
One student stated "I had a blast meeting all the incredibly talented models and even more fun getting out of my shell!"
PSHS Spotlight: During the October 6 volleyball game, Pagosa Springs High School celebrated its Special Olympics team! Students were recognized between matches, joined in some volleyball action, and helped lead the crowd in school spirit. A special thank you to senior Dawson Iverson and junior Lister for helping organize this fun and inclusive event!
PSMS Spotlight: PSMS sixth graders recently spent two days and one night exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve! Students climbed the tallest dune, learned about astronomy and local history, created sand art, and made lasting memories. Through adventure learning experiences like this, students step outside their comfort zones, build confidence and independence, strengthen relationships, and discover the excitement of learning beyond the classroom.
Staff Appreciations
Thank You, School Resource Officer, Brandon Bishop!
Please join us in congratulating School Resource Officer Brandon Bishop on his well-deserved promotion to detective with the Town of Pagosa Springs Police Department. Since joining ASD in April 2023, Officer Bishop has been a trusted partner in school safety and a positive presence in the lives of our students and staff. From building relationships with students and supporting the L.E.A.D. program to cheering on our Pirates at sporting events, he has made a lasting impact on our school community. Thank you, Officer Bishop, for your dedication and service! We'll miss seeing you in our schools, but you'll always be part of our Pirate family.
The Pagosa Springs Police Department will hire a new School Resource Officer to serve our schools.
Melissa Wood, PSMS Counselor
“Melissa consistently goes above and beyond. She works tirelessly to ensure that all students feel safe, valued, and experience a strong sense of belonging within the school community. Whether she is facilitating lunch groups or providing individualized support, Melissa effectively meets a wide range of student needs—from routine schedule adjustments to more intensive crisis intervention. In addition to her exceptional support for students, Melissa is a reliable and encouraging presence for her colleagues.”
Tracy Schenk, PSES Counselor:
“Tracy is an expert in her field and is always willing to share resources or jump in to help anyone. She understands both teaching and counseling, which is essential in supporting students and staff. She also has a wealth of resources and creates a synergy in meeting both academic and social-emotional needs.”
Molly Gibson & Ashley Breed, PSHS Counselors, and Krisha Doocy, PSHS Registrar
“I would like to take a moment to recognize and celebrate these three amazing ladies for all they do to support our students at Pagosa Springs High School! They have been putting in extra time and going above and beyond to help students stay on track for graduation and prepare for their futures beyond high school. From meeting with students and helping them navigate graduation requirements to organizing important events like the College Fair this past week, their work makes a tremendous difference in the lives of our students. They are continually preparing and sharing information to keep students and families up to date on important opportunities, deadlines, and so much more. Their encouragement and guidance help students become proactive in planning for their futures and taking advantage of the opportunities available to them. There is so much work that happens behind the scenes, and we are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and dedication these three put into supporting our students. Their commitment helps ensure that our students have the information, resources, and support they need to reach their goals.”
Families often wonder when students should stay home from school. For many families, this decision can be even more difficult because of work responsibilities and lack of child care options. We understand it can be a hardship for both the student and the parent or guardian to miss school. It is important for your student's health, as well as the health of our entire school community, to stay home when there are signs your student may be contagious to others.
