Kirby Smart, currently the head football coach at the University of Georgia and one of the best (...I say the best) coaches in all of college football, knows a thing or two about success. His teams at Georgia have won 6 SEC East Division crowns, 2 SEC Championships and 2 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (2021 & 2022). Here is a quote from Coach Smart on what it takes to be successful:
"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love for what you are doing."
The actions cited by Coach Smart align 100% with what our Brickies do on a daily basis to achieve their goals - both individually and collectively. In fact, this fall sports season has painted a B-E-A-UTIFUL picture of how the perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and LOVE have not only been on display when our kids compete, but they have also created opportunities for special things to happen! This week alone saw our boys tennis team compete in an IHSAA Regional after winning the Sectional 9 days ago ... our boys & girls soccer teams pushing hard to advance through their own IHSAA Sectional brackets ... and our girls volleyball team host a special night to support a fantastic cause!!
Now that you've all persevered the intro ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Do you love BINGO?
Come out and play to support the Hobart Athletic Dept on October 26th!

Girls
After posting the best regular season in school history with a record of 13-2-1, the Lady Brickies began the IHSAA Tournament Series over at Portage High School on Thursday night! Our girls drew a bye in the first round and faced the host Indians in Thursday's first semifinal contest. Just a few minutes into the game, Portage scored on a breakaway opportunity to take an early 1-0 lead. Hobart responded a few minutes later with a GOOOOOOOOOAAALL by sophomore Kurah Krucina to tie things up at 1-1! 10 minutes later, it was Krucina AGAIN who sent a shot into the back of the net to give the Bricks a 2-1 advantage ...which is where the score stayed for the remainder of the first half. In the second half, Hobart maintained control and had multiple shots on goal, but just couldn't find the net. Portage kept hanging on hoping to get the game tied and sent into overtime. As the clock wound under 10 minutes, play was FRANTIC as the Indians became more and more desperate to score and the Brickies became more and more determined to hold on! Every time Portage threatened down the stretch, our girls came through with some STELLAR D-D-D-DEFENSE and when the final buzzer sounded, it was a 2-1 BRICKIE VICTORY!!! WHAT A GAME!! WHAT AN EFFORT!! With the win, Hobart advanced to the IHSAA Sectional Finals!
In the 2nd semifinal contest, Valparaiso throttled Merrillville 9-0.
Saturday afternoon, it was ALL ON THE LINE as Hobart faced the Valparaiso Vikings for the 'ship! A year ago, these two teams met on Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard in the IHSAA Sectional semifinals with the Vikings winning a close one 2-0. This time around, Hobart entered the contest with a school record 14 wins ... Valpo had 12 ... both finished 3rd in their respective conferences ... Hobart ranked #46 in Indiana and the Vikings were #34. No doubt about it - this game would be close. Throughout the first half, it was JUST AS ADVERTISED with both D-D-D-DEFENSES keeping the opposing offenses at bay and after 40 minutes, the scoreboard showed a 0-0 tie. At halftime, both squads made some adjustments, but the D-D-D-DEFENSE was still STELLAR for the first 20 minutes and the score remained tied at 0! Around the 19-minute mark, Valparaiso finally broke through the strong Brickie defensive front and scored from about 25 yards out to take a 1-0 lead. As the clock ran down, play became more and more INTENSE as the Bricks worked hard to get things tied up again. A Hobart shot even ricocheted off the top of the goal with under 2 minutes remaining and then got cleared by the Valpo defense ... so close! Ultimately, time ran out on Hobart and their quest for the first sectional crown in school history as Valparaiso celebrated their 21st with the 1-0 win.
Our girls played their hearts out on that turf ... literally giving every ounce of energy they had on a warm Saturday afternoon in October. This one hurts for sure ... ending the season always does - particularly when it's been filled with such joy and excitement. Still, there is no disappointment - only PRIDE ... PRIDE in how our girls played with heart, determination and grit ... PRIDE in how well they represented this blue collar town on the biggest stage in the area ... PRIDE in how amazing this season was ... PRIDE in watching the blend of senior leadership and youthful skill help embody what it means to be a Brickie and create the best season in girls soccer history at Hobart!! I know there were a lot of tears out there yesterday, but soon those tears will be replaced with smiles as our girls look back on this magical 2024 run!!
THANK YOU to our seniors - Laila Perschau, Annabelle Mauries, Piper Ellenberger, Alicia Salamanca, Natalie Hostetler, Addy Williams, Makenna Rotz & Gabby Reyes ... and to our FANTASTIC coaching staff - Toby Provins, Chanler Rosenbaum, Gervea Sison, Justin Tinoco & Alex Trajkovski for such an AMAZING YEAR!! WE ARE SO PROUD!!
The Brickies finished 14-3-1 on the year ... most wins in SCHOOL HISTORY!
Boys
If you recall, our boys futbol team won the 2023 IHSAA Sectional over at Merrillville last fall ... the first in school history for boys soccer. The 2024 Brickies entered sectional play this past week after showing INCREDIBLE improvement over the course of the season - going 6-3-2 in their final 11 games! On Tuesday, our boys faced Kankakee Valley in a quarterfinal game over at Crown Point. After the Kougars took an early 1-0 lead, sophomore Spencer Provins launched a shot from about 30 yards out that found NOTHING BUT NET to tie it up at 1-1!!! Classmate Cameron Guess added another GOOOOOOOOAAALL before the end of the half and Hobart took a 2-1 lead into the locker room! In the 2nd half, junior Gabe Rodriguez was ON FIRE as he scored two GOOOOOOAAALLLS ... one on a PK and the other after a SPECTACULAR MOVE to give Hobart a commanding 4-1 cushion!! KV was able to cut the deficit to 4-2 with a late score, but that's as close as it got as the Brickies earned the come-from-behind VICTORY!!
*This is the 5th consecutive year that our boys have advanced past the first round of the IHSAA Sectional! WOW!!
The Bricks were right back at Crown Point on Wednesday night to face the Valparaiso Vikings in the semifinal round. Hobart was ON THE ATTACK early and had a few chances to score in the first 15 minutes of play, but just couldn't find the net. The Vikings finally broke through the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE and scored on a corner-kick to take the lead and then scored again less than a minute later to move in front 2-0. Before the end of the first half, Valpo was able to add 3 more goals to make it a 5-0 game at the break. Over the final 40 minutes of play, our boys NEVER GAVE UP and played with TREMENDOUS HEART ... definitely leaving everything they had on the field. Ultimately, the Vikings were the better team on this night and held off every Hobart scoring attempt to win 8-0. Freshman goalie Michael Klaich had about 20 saves as the Vikings consistently put pressure on the net throughout the contest.
The Bricks concluded the 2024 season with a record of 7-7-3 ... bowing out in the IHSAA Sectional semifinals to a strong squad from Valparaiso. On Saturday night, the Vikings defeated Crown Point in overtime for the championship.
THANK YOU to our seniors - Gavin Guess, Adrian Chavez & Marcos Macias - and our coaches Rakim Ali, Charles Richardson & Steven McDowell - for a TERRIFIC season!
The end is always tough, but Hobart has a lot to be proud of! After graduating 9 seniors in 2023, this group of youngsters grew up and gained valuable experience against a very challenging schedule this fall. That experience will no doubt help them in the years ahead. If I were you, I'd wear some shades when you're around these guys ... their future is BRIGHT!

Boys Tennis
After winning the 6th IHSAA Boys Tennis Sectional CHAMPIONSHIP in school history, the Brickies headed to LaPorte High School on Tuesday for the Regional semifinal round. Their opponent was region powerhouse Valparaiso. The Hobart lineup featured senior Levi Snyder (#1 singles), juniors Gabe Gutierrez (#2 singles) & Cash Salunga (#3 singles) ... sophomores Cash Ellenberger & Mason Mitchell (#1 doubles) and the #2 doubles team of sophomore Angle Gomez & freshman Maverick Becerra. Fighting what felt like an uphill battle from the start, our boys served and returned as best they could against a very talented Vikings team. In spite of the Brickie's effort, Valpo won the first set at all 5 positions and never looked back winning 5-0 to advance to the regional final against mighty South Bend St Joseph, who eventually bested the Vikes 5-0 for the title.
This fall was a FANTASTIC one for Boys Tennis! The Brickies won 12 matches and a sectional championship! With just one senior on the varsity squad, next fall could be even more fun :).
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Cade Brumley, Coach Bill Granzow, and to ALL of our boys for representing H-town so well! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!

Football
If you were looking for an entertaining football game to watch on Friday night, I sincerely hope you were at Zlotnik Field on the campus of Morton High School in Hammond because it was a DOOZY!
The host Governors got on the board first midway through the first quarter and led 7-0. In a back-and-forth 2nd stanza that saw these two teams score a combined 40 points (19 for the Bricks & 21 for the Govs), Morton held a 28-19 advantage heading into the halftime locker room. The Governors scored AGAIN to move in front 34-19 early in the 3rd quarter and seemingly had control ... but HERE CAME THE BRICKS!!! Our boys rattled off 22 UNANSWERED POINTS!! A PICK 6 by sophomore Bryce Tolliver got the rally going ... then classmate Aleks Tatum scrambled for a successful 2-pt conversion ... then senior Willy "The Jet" Shearer sprinted into the endzone from 45 yds out on the next Brickie possession ... and to cap it off, sophomore Aiden Kasch forced a FUMMMMBBLLE that was recovered by senior Patrick O'Connor at the Morton 11-yd line and Tatum ran it in on the next play for a 41-34 Hobart lead!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Just when you thought you could catch your breath, Morton scored to tie it at 41 early in the 4th quarter ... then Tatum scampered into the endzone from 33-yds to put the Bricks back in front ... and the host Govs scored AGAIN with just a minute remaining to send it to OVERTIME with the scoreboard showing a 48-48 tie!! HOLY SCHNIKES!!
The Govs and Bricks traded TDs in the first overtime segment - The Jet racing in from 10 yds for Hobart. In the 2nd OT, senior Zander Lankford sent a 31-yd FG through the uprights to give Hobart a 58-55 lead, but Morton was able to score a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage and won an incredible game 61-58. Yes ... that was actually the final score ... 61-58 ... WOW.
An "L" is always tough, but after trailing 34-19 and on the verge of getting run out of town, our boys showed some UNBELIEVABLE determination to claw their way back in it ... tied it and even took the lead! It would've been easy to feel sorry for ourselves when things weren't going our way, but the Brickies turned things around and gave themselves a shot - which is all you can ask for in the end. Ultimately, you also have to tip your cap to Morton for keeping their foot on the proverbial gas pedal - not flinching when Hobart made their run to move in front and bouncing back to win in double OT.
For the game, Tatum had 15 carries for 100 yds and 2 TDs ... Shearer tallied 13 rushes for 79 yds and 3 TDs. Shearer also led Hobart with 8 tackles on defense ... O'Connor and sophomore Stephen Miller each had 7 in the loss.
Hobart is now an even 4-4 on the year and will travel to Highland on Friday for the regular season finale. On a side note, Andrean defeated Hanover Central on Friday night to create a 3-way tie for first place in the Northwest Crossroads Conference. Hobart, Hanover and Andrean all have just 1 loss in conference play (Hanover 5-1, Hobart & Andrean 4-1). If the Brickies win @ Highland on Friday, our boys will clinch a share of the NCC Championship! YOU CAN DO IT BOYS!! WE BELIEVE!!!

THANK YOU Brian Juris for these GREAT PICS!!
Volleyball
The Brickies wrapped up the regular season with 3 games this past week.
On Monday, Hobart was DIGGING PINK to raise $$ for Side-Out Foundation to help fund cancer research and treatment. There was a bake sale, raffle baskets, 50/50 and a game against Hammond Central! In the first set, the Bricks got it going early and jumped out to a 13-5 advantage! Hammond Central rallied to get within 21-18, but our girls scored the final four points to win 25-18 and take a 1-0 lead! In the second set, Hammond was the squad that jumped ahead early by a 10-7 score. Our girls didn't panic. In fact, they responded BRILLIANTLY by scoring 11 of the next 15 points to take an 18-14 lead and then closed it out 25-17! YES!! The third set went back-and-forth, but once again it was the Brickies who seized control and won 25-18 to secure the 3-set VICTORY!!
On a side note, DIG PINK Night raised over $400 for the Side-Out Foundation!! GREAT JOB BRICKIES!!
Tuesday brought a road trip to Hanover Central for an NCC showdown. The Wildcats were having their own DIG PINK night ... must be October ... and won the first set 25-16. In the second set, the Bricks were in control until a late Hanover rally got the hosts within 20-18. A timeout by Coach Price got our girls refocused and the Bricks rattled off FIVE STRAIGHT POINTS to win 25-18 & tie up the match 1-1!! The Wildcats regained their composure after giving up 5 straight and cruised in the 3rd set 25-12 to regain the overall lead 2-1. Hobart came out determined in the 4th set and held a 22-13 lead before Hanover rallied again ... this time moving in front 24-23. After another timeout by Coach Price, the Bricks SCORED THREE IN A ROW TO WIN 26-24!! WOW! WHAT A GAME!! Unfortunately, the Wildcats had too much firepower in the 5th & deciding set and won 15-8 to send our girls home with a 3-2 defeat.
On Thursday night, the Brickies closed down the 2024 regular season with a home contest against NCC rival Kankakee Valley. Back on September 12th, the Kougars defeated our girls 3-0 in a game that was much more competitive than the final tally might indicate. Could the Bricks flip the script this time around? In the first set, Hobart matched KV serve for serve early on, but the Kougars gained control midway through and won 25-13. In the next set, Hobart got behind 22-11, but RALLIED to close within 24-17 before falling. In the 3rd and final set of the night, KV moved in front right away ... held off every comeback attempt our girls tried to mount and left town with another 3-0 win.
Hobart finished the regular season with a record of 11-19 and will serve as HOST of the 2024 IHSAA Girls Volleyball Sectional next week. Our girls drew a bye in the first round and will face Portage on Saturday morning in the semifinals. A "W" would put our girls in the Championship round!
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO!
#CANYOUDIGIT
Cross Country
Our Brickie harriers had the week off from competition after competing in the NCC Championship meet a week ago. When the IHSAA eliminated the "Semi-State" portion of the tournament series and pushed the sectional back a week, it created a gap for teams to get some final training preparations made and heal up any nagging injuries ...which is exactly what the Bricks have been doing.
The IHSAA Sectional will be run at Sunset Hill County Park on Saturday, October 19th. The Girls will race at 10:30am followed by the Boys @ 11:15. Top 5 teams and the top 15 individuals on non-qualifying teams will advance to the IHSAA Regional held at New Prairie on October 26th. WE ARE ... HO-BART! LET'S GO BRICKS!!
