May's Cougar Value - Adaptable

Adaptability is the quality of being able to adjust to new and changing conditions. Adaptable Cougars easily adjust to new situations and use them to find ways to grow. They work with others toward a common goal, setting aside their own self-interest to ensure group success.

Portrait of an NRW Graduate: Critical Thinker

The North Rose-Wolcott Strategic Action Plan adopted in 2025 features seven components that make up the Portrait of an NRW Graduate. These characteristics represent a clear vision for what it means to be a graduate of the North Rose-Wolcott Central School District. They guide our daily work to prepare our students to thrive beyond NRW as lifelong learners, engaged citizens, and compassionate leaders.

A critical thinker actively applies reasoning and questions assumptions to evaluate information and discern truth. NRW graduates approach information with curiosity and discernment. They analyze evidence and apply sound reasoning to make informed decisions, knowing that critical thinking skills are essential for lifelong learning and leadership.

Updates from the Nurse's Office

New York State requires students new to a district, along with those in grades Pre-K, K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, to have physical exams on file. I recommend beating the end-of-summer rush and scheduling your appointment as early as possible. If your child is going to need medication at school next year, plan ahead and get a doctor’s note. Medication cannot be given without a doctor’s note and a parent's signature. Please reach out for medication drop-offs as medication CANNOT be sent in with the students. If you have any questions regarding physicals, immunizations, or medications at school, please reach out, and we will help in any way that I can!

Counseling Corner - Mr. Bittner and Miss Motyka

In May and June, abuse prevention and awareness will be taught in grades K-4 at North Rose Elementary School. This is commonly referred to as Erin’s Law. In August 2019, New York State became the 37th state to sign Erin’s Law into legislation. It has since been passed in Ohio and is pending legislation in the remaining 12 states. The law requires public schools to teach abuse and exploitation prevention to students in grade K-8. It is intended to help children, teachers, and parents gain awareness and/or seek assistance, referral, or resource information for children and families who are victims of abuse.

Our school utilizes the Care for Kids and We Care Elementary curriculum and it is taught through the Survivors Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes. This agency also offers the following services to our community free of charge:

-Domestic Violence Shelter

-Help with Legal Filings

-Safety Planning

-Mental Health Support

-Case Management

-Long Term Housing Support

Updates from our Instructional Coach, Mrs. Pentycofe

Our teachers continue to have successful Small Group Reading blocks daily in every grade level and are seeing amazing growth with our students in reading. Teachers track the progress of students throughout the school year, use research-based strategies to support any needs, and enrich learning through the use of book clubs. Our grade level teams and school leadership teams look at that data quarterly to best meet the needs of all learners. Small Group Reading is a structured and focused time of our day that students are receiving instruction aligned with the skills they need in order to become strong readers and writers. We have also been using response to text writing at all grade levels because we want the writing to match the reading. There are many ways families can support this work at home. Read with your child, read to your child, listen to your child read, and ask them about the books they enjoy. A free trip to your local library is another engaging way to create lifelong readers.

Spotlight on Specials (PE, Music, Art and Library)

This year the Festival of the Arts will be Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 5:30-7:30PM. Art will be on display throughout the main hallway. Students in 3PK - Grade 4 will perform songs they learned in music class, and the band will also perform. Please plan to attend and see what your child has accomplished this year!

In library class this year we have had a busy year. We started the year off with Computer Science lessons and what Library classes will look like on a cart. We have covered literature genres including biography, fables, fiction, nonfiction… We explored areas connected to classroom content that included weather, Lunar New Year, the Mayflower, communities, our cougar pride traits and much more. We will be wrapping up the year with some more computer science lessons and some exciting STEAM Challenges.

In PE, all students start the year and finish the year with NYS fitness testing. The results from these fun activities provide a clear picture of student growth throughout the school year. The fourth grade students were able to travel to the High School pool for some fun aquatics activities. They will return to the HS track for our yearly track and field day. We also run our Healthy Heart Challenge and as a school, we were able to raise over $6000 which afforded us some new PE equipment. And as always, our annual PE Night was a success!

Middle School Updates Middle School Updates

Updates from Mrs. Yarnes and Mr. Canori

May has arrived, and we are hopeful that warmer weather is headed our way! It is hard to believe how quickly the school year has gone by. Our students continue to impress us with their growth, effort, and progress, and we are looking forward to celebrating all they have accomplished during the many end-of-year events ahead.

During the week of May 4th–8th, we will celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week. We encourage you to have your child take a moment to share what they appreciate about their teachers. Thoughtful notes and kind words truly mean a great deal to our staff, and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication and commitment to our students each and every day.

We remain committed to ensuring that our school is a safe, supportive, and positive environment for all students. We recognize that middle school can be a challenging time, and we continue to support students in learning from their experiences, taking responsibility, and showing empathy toward others. Through a restorative approach, we are providing meaningful opportunities for students to reflect, repair relationships, and grow. We are very proud of the progress our students continue to make.

We would also like to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers in our NRW school community. We appreciate you and are grateful for all that you do!

As a reminder, students may stay during activity period Tuesday through Friday from 2:17–3:00 PM to receive additional support or guidance from their teachers.

Thank you for your continued support!

Updates from Nurse Barron

As we begin to experience warmer weather, we kindly ask for your continued support in reinforcing our school dress code expectations. We understand that seasonal changes often bring adjustments in clothing choices; however, it is important that all students continue to dress in a manner that is appropriate for the school environment.

We ask that you take a few moments each morning to help ensure your child’s attire aligns with our school dress code. Doing so helps us maintain a respectful, focused, and positive learning environment for all students.

If a student is found to be out of dress code during the school day, a parent or guardian may be contacted, and the student may be required to change into appropriate attire.

We appreciate your partnership and support in helping us uphold these expectations. If you have any questions regarding the dress code, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your help monitoring this with warmer weather ahead!

Message from our Counseling Corner

As we enter the final stretch of the school year, May is a time full of activity, excitement, and important responsibilities. With warmer (some days...) weather and end-of-year events approaching, it can be easy for students to lose focus. Staying organized and on top of responsibilities is more important now than ever.

  • Stay on Track with Schedules
Encourage your student to regularly check their assignments, upcoming tests, and school commitments. Using a planner, agenda, or digital calendar can help them keep everything in one place and avoid last-minute stress. Building the habit of reviewing their schedule daily can make a big difference in staying organized.

  • Finish Strong
Motivation can dip toward the end of the year, but May is a great opportunity to reinforce perseverance. Setting small, achievable goals each week can help students stay focused and feel a sense of accomplishment as they check things off their list.

  • Emotional Check-In
With busy schedules and changing routines, students may feel overwhelmed. Encourage open conversations at home about how they’re feeling. Practicing simple coping strategies—like taking breaks, staying active, and getting enough sleep—can support both emotional well-being and academic success.

  • Looking Ahead
This is also a time of transition and reflection. Whether students are moving up a grade or preparing for a new school, it’s helpful to celebrate their growth and begin thinking positively about what’s next.

If you have any questions or would like additional support for your student, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the counseling office.

Grade Level Updates

Grade 5: In ELA, we will be beginning our next book, "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt. This quarter we are focusing on analyzing the characters and themes within the story, and continuing to expand those thoughts within our writing. In Social Studies, we are continuing our work in Colonial America! We will be learning more about the start of the colonies, their relationship with Native Peoples, their customs and economies. In Science we will be starting a new unit on ecology! We have lots of fun field trips coming up to get hands on and real world experiences, so be on the lookout for information about those! In math we are preparing for our upcoming state test on May 5th and 6th. We will then be working on graphing and plotting! Towards the end of the month we will be working on a project building objects using our knowledge of volume!

Grade 6: In social studies, we are concluding our unit on Greece and moving on to Rome. Math classes will begin our final unit of the year on statistics and probability. ELA classes will be reading Holes and creating their own comic book based on the novel. Computer Science classes will be doing a research project on their favorite musicians. Science will finish our weather unit and move into a unit of study on Earth's resources (plate tectonics and rock cycling).

Grade 7: ELA classes have completed NYS testing. The students did a great job at perservering, I am very proud of them. We are starting to read our final novel of the year. This story will allow students to explore difficult topics involving racial injustice and fairness. I am eager for the students to bond with the characters and empathize with this inspiring story. In Social Studies we are finally finishing up the Constitution. Next, we will be moving out West. Some of the topics we'll be learning about the War of 1812, Louisiana Purchase, and the Trail of Tears.

Grade 8: Spanish students will begin reviewing for the end of year exam. Reminder, that students must pass the exam and the year to get credit for Spanish. We will be doing the verbal portion of the exam at the end of May. Students will be receiving their date and time for their verbal soon and will be expected to be present in school for that. Please reach out if there are any questions. Social Studies students have watched the powerful opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, which looks closely at the events of D-Day on June 6, 1944. As we continue our unit of World War II, students will be starting choice based research projects, as well as looking closer at the events surrounding the Holocaust, as well as gearing up for our Harvard Style debate about the usage of the Atomic Bomb. In Math 8, we will be taking the NYS test then starting our systems of equations unit to help prepare for 9th grade. In Algebra, we will be finishing the last unit then reviewing for the Algebra Regents in June.

High School Updates High School Updates

Updates from Ms. Sinclair and Ms. Visalli

The month of May is always an exciting and busy time here at the high school. As we move through the final stretch of the school year, our calendar is filled with meaningful academic milestones and memorable student experiences.

One of the highlights of the month will be our Decision Day Celebration on Thursday, May 21st, where we will recognize the Class of 2026 and celebrate their post-graduation plans. We are incredibly proud of our seniors and look forward to honoring all they have accomplished. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in several special events, including Multicultural Week, the Spring Concert, and, later in the month, the Junior/Senior Ball and Prom. Our seniors are especially looking forward to their upcoming Senior Trip, which serves as a well-deserved celebration of their time in high school.

May is also a critical academic period, with AP Exams taking place and final exams and Regents exams quickly approaching. Attending daily and being on time remains an essential component of student success, and we encourage all students to remain focused and engaged in their learning. Families are encouraged to continue reaching out to teachers regarding student progress and performance. Students should also take advantage of opportunities for extra help after school during Activity Period (2:30-3:10).

Looking ahead, more information about Regents Exams will be shared soon, including the testing schedule and Regents preparation opportunities. We strongly encourage students to begin preparing early and to participate in review sessions as they become available.

Thank you for your continued support. We are extremely proud of our students’ achievements and look forward to a strong and successful finish to the school year. Here’s to longer days, warmer weather, and the many celebrations still to come!

Department Spotlight: Physical Education

High School Physical Education at NRW has always been a valued and strongly promoted part of our district. Offering students a variety of choices and activity options helps keep them motivated and engaged. These opportunities not only encourage students to stay active but also help them develop lifelong skills. Providing meaningful and diverse activities is of the utmost importance.

CPR, swimming, individualized fitness, and team-based activities are among the units we offer to engage students and keep them actively involved in their health and wellness.

This year, we invited a staff member, Joe Slasky, a well-known official in our district (Section V and Section III), to speak to our class about becoming a sports official. There is a high demand for umpires and referees across the country. This presentation provided students with valuable insight into the world of officiating and helped spark interest in this important role within athletics.

This year, we have made several important updates to our facility to better support student learning, safety, and overall wellness.

If it’s May in the library, that means we’re starting to think about the end of the year! We’ve already hosted 2 AP exams, and we’re so proud of the students who took the tests - these tests are a great way to start preparing for college!

It’s also time to think about end-of-the year checkouts and final book returns. The last day for students to check out books is MAY 15, and all library books are due back in the library by JUNE 1. Students will be notified about any overdue books they may have out - please help your student look for these books! Rarely are books ever truly lost… they often just end up in unexpected places!

Great places to look for missing books include:

  • Under and behind furniture,

  • On bookshelves at home,

  • In siblings’ rooms or in closets,

  • Under car seats or in trunks,

  • In old backpacks,

  • In couch cushions or between the bed and the wall,

  • On classroom bookshelves, and

  • At friends’ or relatives’ houses

If a student believes that they returned a book but it is still showing up as overdue or lost, please encourage them to come to the library and check the shelves. Sometimes things get shelved accidentally!
