Fall Break
Where Learning Takes Flight
Three Dimensions of Student Achievement
- Mastery of Knowledge and Skills
- Character Building
- High-Quality Work
Hello Glennwood Families,
It’s hard to believe, but we are already wrapping up the first seven weeks of the school year! The time has truly flown by - and that’s a testament to the joyful learning, strong relationships, and positive momentum we’ve built together as a school community. I continue to be so proud of our students, staff, and families for the way we’ve launched this year with purpose, energy, and heart.
As we head into Fall Break next week, I want to wish everyone a safe, restful, and enjoyable time with loved ones. Whether you're traveling or staying close to home, I hope the break gives you the chance to recharge, reflect, and make meaningful memories with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming our Eagles back on Monday, September 29, refreshed and ready for the next part of our journey together.
I’m thrilled to share that Glennwood has once again won the CSD Battle of the Bands - and it’s all thanks to the incredible efforts of our very own Flock of Eagles! Their energy, dedication, and spirit helped secure a repeat victory and another $1,000 music grant for our school.
Thank you to all of the students, staff, and families who showed up and showed out to represent Glennwood. Your support continues to strengthen our music program and helps ensure our students have access to joyful, high-quality arts experiences throughout the year.
Thank you for being such a vital part of what makes Glennwood a truly special place to learn and grow.
Wishing you all a wonderful Fall Break,
Bill Howard
Principal, Glennwood Elementary
Congratulations to our very own parent band — FLOCK OF EAGLES — for becoming 2x champs of the Decatur Education Foundation Battle of the Bands!!!
Thank you to all the Glennwood Elementary families who came out to support and help our school music program win the $1000 music grant from the Decatur Education Foundation. 💙💚
September Walk and Roll is Tomorrow!
Join us this Friday for the next Walk & Roll, part of the larger Georgia Safe Routes to School initiative! Students are encouraged to walk, bike or roll to school.
There are also 3 “Walking School Bus” routes where a group of students, parent volunteers, and staff meet and walk to school together! All are welcome to join, with or without a parent. We’ve got plenty of volunteers to ensure everyone can participate and get to Glennwood Elementary safely! See schedule below.
Don’t forget that every student who participates gets to put a marble in the jar for the chance to earn extra recess for the school!
Volunteering and Chaperoning at Glennwood Procedures
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Glennwood Elementary School! To ensure the safety of all students, City Schools of Decatur requires all volunteers and chaperones to have a current background check on file. This is especially important for anyone who will be with students without a staff member present.
How to get a background check:
Schedule an appointment: Background checks are conducted at 2635 Talley Street, 2nd Floor. There is a $35 fee (cash or check made out to Glennwood Elementary School) for the background check, and it must be turned in to Glennwood before you go for your background check. You can book an appointment using this link: https://calendar.app.google/du9yW1Gg8SV6pjGp8
Important scheduling note: Appointments are typically available on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can schedule an appointment up to 21 days in advance.
What to bring: Please bring your driver's license with you to your 10-minute appointment. You will also fill out a short form.
Results: The information is submitted to the GBI, and results are often returned within 24 hours.
Please remember that a new background check is required each year for all parents and volunteers. We appreciate your cooperation and support!
*Reach out to Principal Howard if financial assistance is needed to cover the cost of the background check.
Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester, the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it into the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 1. No additional information is needed. The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood is Susanna Shewan. Please use this LINK to find a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit CSD's gifted program website.
