American Indian Month
May marks a time of reflection, togetherness and action across Minnesota as Indigenous communities and allies come together to honor American Indian Month and the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).
First recognized in Minnesota in 1969, American Indian Month began as a way to highlight the contributions of Indigenous peoples and to strengthen relationships between Tribal Nations and state institutions. Over the years, it has grown into a powerful platform for cultural celebration, education and community-building. Coinciding with this month is National Day of Awareness for MMIW, observed on May 5.
There are 11 federally recognized Tribal Nations in Mni Sota made up of four Dakot (Sious) tribes and seven Anishinaabe (Chippewa, Ojibwe). In addition to those federally recognized tries, the Twin Cities is home to a strong urban American Indian community.
Through art, activism and prayer, communities across Minnesota bring awareness and attention to the devastating epidemic of violence facing Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people. These gatherings are opportunities to stand in solidarity, learn from one another, and celebrate the strength and resilience of the Indigenous communities of Minnesota.
