Spirit Days
Student Handbook Information
Hats and Hoodies
I want to advise you of an update to the student dress code policy outlined on page 3 of the Copopa Student Handbook. "No hats, visors, or bandanas except for medical reasons, religious reasons, or special spirit days."
To address ambiguity surrounding headwear regulations, the explicit restriction on hooded sweatshirts (hoodies) with the hood raised is being incorporated into the existing rule regarding hats, visors, and bandanas. While garment construction differs, wearing a hood up within the school facility presents similar policy and visibility considerations as traditional head coverings. It can be a distraction to the learning environment, but it also does not allow staff members to see a student's face.
A general provision has been added specifying that any questionable dress code issues, ambiguities, or concerns remain at the discretion of the principal.
These revisions are intended to establish clear expectations, maintain a consistent environment, minimize confusion, and keep children safe.
The revised handbook has been posted on our webpage. You can also access it by clicking on the link below.

3rd and 4th Grade Parents....
Please make sure your child does not put stickers on his/her chromebook. We have been advised that they can leave permanent residue, stickiness, and cause uneven fading.

Planned Absences
The district planned absence form is currently being updated to reflect the updated attendance laws in Ohio. Until the new form is released, you may still fill out the current form. However, please know and understand that the attendance information still coincides with the most current attendance laws set forth in Ohio
National Math Star
Niashadh Sanka, a third grade student at Copopa Elementary, has been selected as a National Math Star. He has been selected as one of just over 600 nationwide from a pool of nearly 9,000 top elementary math students from around the country.
National Math Stars is a nonprofit that identifies mathematically extraordinary students beginning in 2nd and 3rd grade and supports them for ten years, through high school graduation. Founded in 2023, the organization now works with schools and districts in ten states.
Naishadh was selected for the program after a multi-stage evaluation of mathematical aptitude. Fewer than 7% of applicants are accepted as National Math Stars.
Over the next ten years, Niashadh will receive:
Financial support for advanced math courses and more.
Ongoing mentorship and guidance from the National Math Stars team
Advanced math learning opportunities
STEM enrichment materials and experiences
Invitations to math competitions and summer camps
"This is an amazing honor and opportunity for Niashadh, and I look forward to hearing about his experiences," said Mrs. Ashworth, Copopa principal.
Niashadh was asked what is the hardest problem you’ve worked on lately?
“The hardest question I have ever had was pre-algebra questions. They were all creative questions.”
We're proud to count Niashadh among our students, and grateful to the teachers, school leaders, and family members who helped him get here.

Student Cell Phones and Smart Watches
We understand that in today’s world many young students have a cell phone. However, there is not a use for a cell phone at the elementary level. If a student possesses a cell phone, it should remain in the student’s book bag in the off or silenced position throughout the school day. If you need to pick your child up from school you need to call the office, not a personal cell phone. If we need to get in touch with a parent we will do so using the emergency contact numbers on your OneView account. This also includes the use of smart watches/iWatches. Although a watch can be worn for the watch’s intended purpose, smart watches and iWatches should NOT be used during the school day for texting, games, or other apps. This includes lunch and recess. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in the cell phone or watch being taken away and a parent/guardian will need to come to school to pick it up.

Save Your Plastic Bags
We did not place last year, but we are going to try for that picnic table again this year.
Start saving your plastic bags. I will let you know when to start sending them into school.
If you want to take them to the collection center yourself, that is great! Just make sure you tell them COPOPA ELEMENTARY so our school earns credit.
Thank you for the support!
