Off Season Mock Build!
As the new FRC season approaches, our team is diving headfirst into a mock build project to hone our skills and get ready for the exciting challenges to come. This year, we’re recreating the 2019 FRC game, Deep Space—a fast-paced and intricate game where robots must navigate a simulated alien landscape to load spherical "cargo" and attach flat "hatch panels" onto rockets and cargo ships, all while racing against the clock and competing teams.
The mock build season is designed to replicate every aspect of a real FRC build season, offering both veterans and newcomers the opportunity to refine their skills and understand the workflow of a competitive robotics team. Starting with CAD designs and moving through fabrication, assembly, and programming, this comprehensive exercise ensures everyone has a chance to contribute.
A Breakdown of Our Progress
CAD and Design: Our robot design is nearing completion, with the final touches expected to be done by mid-December. This includes an advanced elevator mechanism inspired by some of the best-performing robots from the original Deep Space season, a wrist, and a shooter to score points.
Why Deep Space?
This game’s complexity makes it a perfect training ground for our team. It challenges us to think critically about strategy, design, and teamwork—three pillars of success in FRC. By working on mechanisms like the elevator and shooter, our team not only builds skills but also learns to innovate under constraints, a key factor in robotics competitions.
Beyond the Build
While the robot itself is a major focus, this mock build season is about much more. It’s an opportunity for veterans to mentor newer members, sharing their expertise while fostering collaboration and creativity. Newer members get invaluable hands-on experience, from operating tools to programming components, learning the intricacies of an FRC build season.
This project is also a team bonding experience, bringing together students with diverse skills and interests to solve complex challenges. Whether it’s troubleshooting mechanical issues or brainstorming the best approach to programming, every step reinforces the values of collaboration and perseverance.
What's Next?
As we inch closer to completing the design phase, construction and programming will soon be in full swing. Check out some of the progress photos below to see how our robot is shaping up, and stay tuned for updates as we bring our Deep Space robot to life. The skills, lessons, and camaraderie built during this mock season are sure to propel us into a successful and thrilling FRC season ahead! 🌟

FIRST LEGO League Teams
Our First LEGO League (FLL) teams—Team 61395 The Sea Pups, Team 56346 The Mighty Minnows, and Team 55822 The Aqua Bots—are diving headfirst into their preparations for this year’s highly anticipated Algonquin Regional Event, happening on Saturday, December 7th. These dedicated young innovators have been working tirelessly on both their robot missions and innovation projects, all inspired by the FLL challenge theme, SUBMERGED: Unlocking the Power of the Ocean.
What is FLL All About?
FLL introduces students to the exciting world of STEM by encouraging them to solve real-world problems using engineering, programming, and creativity. Each team’s season has three key components:
- Robot Game: Teams design, build, and program LEGO robots to complete a series of ocean-related missions on a game field. Missions require precision, strategy, and collaboration.
- Innovation Project: Teams identify a real-world problem within the theme, research it, and propose an innovative solution.
- Core Values: Teams are evaluated on their teamwork, inclusion, and enthusiasm, celebrating how FLL combines discovery and fun.
Progress Highlights
Our FLL teams have made incredible strides this season!
- Mission Ready: Each team’s robot is almost ready to take on the competition field, with attachments carefully designed to tackle specific missions. From deploying underwater devices to collecting objects that represent ocean resources, the teams have built creative and efficient solutions.
- Innovative Problem Solving: The innovation projects are a highlight of the season. For example, Team 61395 The Sea Pups has focused on seaweed farming, exploring how this resource can be used in sustainable daily-life products. They even had the opportunity to meet Jaclyn Robidoux, an industry expert, who shared the potential of seaweed in creating eco-friendly materials, food supplements, and much more. This hands-on learning experience has inspired the team to develop an impactful project they can’t wait to present.
- Teamwork & Growth: In addition to robot building and research, the teams have been focusing on teamwork and problem-solving through fun activities. Each meeting strengthens their collaboration skills, ensuring they’re ready to take on any challenge the competition throws their way.
Join Us at the Algonquin Regional Event!
We invite you to cheer on our FLL teams as they present their hard work at the Algonquin Regional Event. This exciting competition is a showcase of STEM innovation, creativity, and teamwork, where students demonstrate their ability to think critically and tackle real-world challenges. Whether it’s watching their robots perform or learning about their ocean-inspired projects, it’s a day you won’t want to miss.
