Bullying Prevention and Awareness

SMS Bullying Prevention Code of Courage

I will not bully others.

I will try to help others that are bullied.

I will make it a point to include others that are easily left out.

As outlined in the SMS Handbook discipline definitions, bullying is intentional harm-doing over time in a relationship with a power imbalance. It can be direct (shoving, taunting, etc.) or indirect (shunning, rumor spreading, cyber bullying, etc.)

Students are encouraged to report bullying to an adult either in person, via Canvas message, or by using the Anonymous Bullying Hotline at 1-(833) 300-7867.

We want to do our best to have zero bullying behavior at SMS. By now, you have been talked to at school about how to prevent bullying for many years. Please take a look at the links that are located on the SMS Community page in Canvas to continue learning about bullying prevention. The biggest thing we can do to stop bullying behavior is to not ignore it. Please tell your trusted adults at home and let Mrs. Naugle, Mrs. Asdell, or Mrs. Smith know if you or a friend are a victim of bullying.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad will have a call-out meeting on Monday, October 24th from 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Questions? See Mrs. Naugle

Winter Sports Season

Winter sports tryouts will be right after fall break. If your student needs a physical, this will need to be on file in the office or in final forms. All students must have a final forms account completed by a guardian before tryouts. If your student participated in a fall sport, you will just need to make sure they have signed up for all of the correct teams that they may want to try out for.

Eventlink is the platform that we use to communicate with parents/family members regarding practices and events.

Any questions please call Scottsburg MS and press option 2 for Athletics.

Reminders for Walkers

SMS students who walk to and from school:

Please be careful when crossing the streets, utilize sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and follow the street crossing signs.

Also, be sure that you are a positive representative of SMS when you are in the community.

Also, as Officer Nicholson reminded you during his classroom visits, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings, including traffic, at all times.

Student Handbook Update

The Scottsburg MS student handbook contains some significant updates for the 2022-2023 school year. The most significant changes took place in the discipline section.

Here are the highlights of three changes that will impact the largest number of students:

  • Cell phones are still not allowed to be used during the school day here at SMS. Phones are expected to be turned off and stored in lockers. Students who are carrying a cell phone or using a cell phone during the school day are in violation. The consequences for each situation are outlined in the handbook.

  • Second is illegal substances. This year students who have illegal substances and/or paraphernalia (most common examples are vapes, cigarettes, or alcohol) will be recommended for expulsion on the first offense.

  • In an attempt to be more aligned with the high school discipline policy, we will be following a progressive discipline approach. This means that when a student commits the same offense multiple times, the discipline will get progressively more serious. Each example is outlined in the doc that is provided by clicking on the picture above or via the link below.

SMS Student Handbook

We encourage you to read the handbook with your child(ren) and to contact us with any questions you may have.

We are looking forward to working with our students and their parents throughout the upcoming school year.
