🍎 Cafeteria Corner: Learning Beyond the Lunch Line!

The fun and learning never stops at Tyler Elementary, even during one of the busiest parts of the day... lunchtime! This week, our students began learning a new recycling routine in the cafeteria. Thanks to our very own Mrs. Hudson, students are learning how to sort recyclable materials and separate them from regular trash to help keep our school clean and environmentally friendly. Thank you, Mrs. Hudson, for sharing your time and supporting our students in this important effort!

Families can help, too! Please encourage your child to practice good cafeteria behavior and table etiquette at home so we can keep everyone safe and respectful during mealtimes. Also, help your student memorize their student ID number, which is used to check out breakfast and lunch each day. Every little bit of practice helps build confidence and independence!

Paws up for recycling and responsible cafeteria habits! 🐾♻️

STAR Reading Assessment (Grades 3-5)

Students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the STAR Reading Assessment, a short, computer-adaptive assessment that helps teachers understand each student's reading strengths and areas for growth. The assessment measures skills such as reading comprehension and vocabulary and adjusts the difficulty of questions based on student responses. Results provide valuable information that helps teachers plan instruction, monitor progress, and ensure that all students receive the support they need to continue growing as readers.

The assessment window will be open from September 1st - September 18th .

School Health Information

While students are encouraged to remain in school whenever possible, parents/guardians will be contacted if a child becomes ill or injured and needs to go home. Students must be picked up if they have a fever of 100°F or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, a suspected contagious illness, an unexplained rash, a serious injury, or are otherwise too ill to remain at school.

Please ensure you have a plan in place for student pick-up when needed. Students may return to school after being fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication and at least 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea has stopped.

Vision and hearing screenings are conducted annually for kindergarten, third-grade, and new students. Parents/guardians will be notified only if further evaluation is recommended.

Spare Change of Clothes Reminder:
To help students stay comfortable and minimize lost instructional time, we ask that every child bring a complete, season-appropriate change of clothes to school. Please include underwear, socks, a shirt, and pants in a labeled gallon-size Ziploc bag. The clothing will be kept at school or in your child’s backpack and used if needed for spills, accidents, or messy recess play. If the spare clothes are used, we will send a reminder to replenish them. Thank you for helping us keep students comfortable and ready to learn!

Dismissal & After‑School Changes

To help us keep dismissal safe and organized for all students, parents and guardians must notify the school of any changes to their child’s dismissal or after‑school plans.

Please do not rely on students to share this information.

💬 How to Report Changes or Absences

  • ParentVue
  • Call: 703‑754‑7181
  • Email: tyes-frontoffice@pwcs.edu

⏰ Early Pick-Up Cut‑Off

All early dismissals must be completed before 2:55 PM.
Anyone arriving after 2:55 PM will need to wait for regular dismissal at 3:25 PM.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our dismissal smooth and safe for every Tyler student!

🌟 Stephanie McQuillan, Spanish Teacher 🌟

Meet Stephanie McQuillan, Tyler Elementary's dedicated Spanish teacher! With a passion for working with children and a talent for keeping the many moving pieces of a classroom running smoothly, Mrs. McQuillan brings energy, encouragement, and a love of learning to her students every day.

What she loves most about Tyler is the strong sense of family among the staff. She values the support, collaboration, and friendships that have made Tyler feel like home throughout her many years here. As both an educator and a former Tyler parent, she has experienced firsthand the caring community that makes our school so special.

When she's not teaching Spanish, you can find her relaxing on the beach with a good book, spending time with family and friends, driving her Jeep, enjoying Pilates, or playing with her two adorable Shih-tzus, Chloe and Hazel. Her favorite children's book is Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss, and her favorite treat is mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Mrs. McQuillan's advice to Tyler students is simple but powerful: "Take risks and don't be afraid to make mistakes! Your teachers are here to support you, help you learn, and cheer you on along the way."

Thank you, Mrs. McQuillan, for inspiring our students and helping make Tyler a wonderful place to learn and grow! 💙💛
