October 2025 Newsletter
October Newsletter
A Message from: Dr. Elna Davis, TISD Superintendent of Schools
Hello, Tarkington ISD Community,
The first six weeks of the school year (August 7 – September 18) are now complete, and we are well into our second grading period (September 22 – October 30). As the fall season settles in, our focus remains on providing targeted instructional support, closing achievement gaps, and building strong foundations in literacy and math across all grade levels.
Our staff has been working diligently to implement new curriculum resources. While any new initiative comes with its challenges, we are committed to smoothing out those bumps through professional development, data-driven instruction, and strong family partnerships. Together, we are laying the groundwork to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.
I am especially excited to begin this year’s Superintendent Lunch Bunch and Superintendent Student Advisory Council. Now in their third year, these gatherings allow me to hear directly from students at every grade level. Their thoughtful feedback has led to meaningful improvements across the district, reminding us that our students are not only our focus but also our most valuable voices.
October also gives us an exceptional opportunity to celebrate Principal Appreciation Month. Our principals work tirelessly to lead their campuses with dedication, vision, and care. I invite you to join me in showing them appreciation all month long—whether through a handwritten note, a thoughtful treat, a surprise lunch, or even volunteering your time on campus. Big or small, every gesture makes a difference, and the entire month of October is an opportunity to recognize their impact on the children of this community. They work incredibly hard on behalf of our students…so I hope you will take a moment to deliver a surprise.
Congratulations to Mr. McCabe! Tarkington ISD would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Mr. McCabe on his recent promotion to Superintendent of West Hardin CCISD. Mr. McCabe has worked diligently to reach this milestone in his career. We wish him all the best as he embarks on this exciting new chapter of his professional journey. In the coming days, I will share more information about our plans for leadership at Tarkington High School as we move forward together. Just as the leaves turn and the fall season brings a spirit of renewal, we remain committed to engaging families, local organizations, and community members in meaningful ways. Thank you for your continual feedback. It is a gift. By working together, we can strengthen support systems for both students and staff, fostering excellence and building a stronger, more connected community.
With gratitude,
Dr. Elna Davis
Superintendent, Tarkington ISD

We have officially wrapped up our first CBA (Curriculum-Based Assessment) of the year, and we are proud of the effort our students and teachers have put in. The results show that the hard work is paying off!
Each student has set personal academic goals and is now tracking their progress after each assessment. This practice builds ownership of their learning and encourages a growth mindset.
Ask your child:
- What goal did you set for yourself this year?
- How did you do on the last CBA compared to that goal?
- What steps are you taking to reach your goal next time?
Together, we can continue to support our Longhorn students as they grow academically and personally this year.

Attendance, PEIMS, and Registration
Student enrollment as of September 15, 2025 was 1880.
Attendance is very important for the education of your student. Not only do they miss out on valuable learning time, but it takes away from funding that the district uses to purchase resources for your student. Our goal at Tarkington ISD is to maintain an attendance percentage of 97%. As you can see by the most recent numbers, we are already below our goal. We appreciate your assistance in getting your student to school every day.
THS - 93.83%
TMS - 94.54%
TES - 94.53%
TEC - 94.75%
TISD - 94.35%

Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
This month, our Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) team has been actively engaged on campuses across the district. By joining Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and conducting classroom calibration walks, we are working alongside administrators to strengthen instructional practices and ensure consistency in high-quality teaching and learning.
A major area of focus has been the review of Common Benchmark Assessment (CBA) data. This information helps campuses identify student strengths and areas for improvement, refine lessons, plan targeted interventions, and monitor student progress closely. These efforts support our district goal of ensuring that every student makes at least one year of academic growth.
In addition, we continue to emphasize the importance of strong Tier 1 instruction—the foundation of every classroom. By supporting intentional lesson design, providing instructional resources, and promoting collaboration across grade levels and campuses, we are equipping teachers with the tools they need to help students succeed. TISD Assessment Calendar
We want to take a moment to celebrate our teachers. Their openness to feedback, willingness to reflect, and dedication to growth create classrooms where students feel supported and inspired to learn. Feedback isn’t about evaluation—it’s about learning together. When teachers try new ideas, share strategies, and lean on each other for support, they create a culture where both adults and students grow side by side.
Teachers truly are the heart of our schools and the number one factor in student success. We are so grateful for the energy, care, and commitment they bring every single day to our students, our families, and our community.

Counseling and Special Programs
Across all campuses, staff are actively engaged in LPAC and MTSS initiatives while also focusing on scheduling and enrollment. At Tarkington High School, the counselor recently hosted a Lamar University campus tour and attended a Scholarship Workshop to better support students’ postsecondary planning.
Meanwhile, LTHS TAFE students are gaining hands-on experience by implementing lessons with TES students, focusing on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) through the Quaver SEL program. In addition, our Lead Counselor participated in CCMR/CTE workshops and is working closely with principals to establish a comprehensive, districtwide CCMR/CTE program that will span grades K–12.
Red Ribbon Week – October 27–30
Tarkington ISD will join schools across the nation in celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 27–30. This annual event promotes healthy, drug-free lifestyles and encourages students to make positive choices for their future. Campuses will host themed dress-up days to show our commitment to living drug-free!
Teletherapy Program for ALL Students
Our district has partnered with Daybreak Health, a school-based mental health company, to offer 1:1 teletherapy services to our students and their families, with qualified clinicians. These services will be provided at no cost to families.
If a student is struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, stress, or other mental health related issues, they can get referred to this program, have an intake appointment, and get matched with a therapist based on their individual needs within 1-2 weeks. The student will meet with their therapist once/week for 50-minutes over ~12 weeks. All sessions are hosted over Zoom and can take place before, during or after school hours, during the week or even on Saturdays.
During the program, the student’s therapist will help them understand their emotions and learn new skills and strategies to manage their symptoms that they can use in class, at home, and throughout their life.
Students ages 5-9 will participate in a Family Teletherapy program that includes at least one parent or guardian. Older students will participate in a 1:1 Teletherapy program.
If your child could benefit from virtual mental health support, utilize the QR code to make a referral or reach out to your school counselor or building administrators for more information.
Health Services
October is Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is increasingly found in counterfeit pills and other substances — and even a tiny amount can be deadly. As part of our commitment to student safety, we encourage parents to talk openly with their children about the risks. Remind them that any pill not prescribed by a doctor or purchased from a pharmacy could contain fentanyl. It’s especially important that kids understand they should never take pills offered by friends, classmates, or strangers — even if they look harmless. Honest, judgment-free conversations can make all the difference. Awareness saves lives.
Immunization Reminder
- Updated immunization records should be submitted to the school nurse. All students must be up to date on their immunizations or have a current immunization waiver on file to remain enrolled in school. If you have questions about what’s required or need help accessing services, we’re here to support you. Healthy kids are better learners!
Join us at the next SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) Meeting on October 3rd at 11am to help shape health and wellness initiatives that support all students — your voice matters! See the attached flyer for details.
Human Resources
TISD recently hosted a Substitute Training Session, equipping our substitutes with the tools and resources they need to be successful in supporting our campuses. We are grateful for their commitment to stepping in and helping our students thrive.
Congratulations to our Custodial Department and Child Nutrition Department for earning the Perfect Attendance Award this period! Your dedication and reliability make a big difference in keeping our schools running smoothly each day.

School and Student Services
As Texas students return to school this fall, TISD is participating in the Texas School Safety Center’s new public awareness campaign, Threats Are No Joke!, to educate students and parents about the serious consequences of making or sharing threats. This PSA serves as a critical reminder that in today’s world, there’s no such thing as “just a joke” when it comes to threats about school violence, school safety, or harm to others. Whether spoken out loud, posted online, or sent in a text, threats, real or fake, can lead to legal consequences, school discipline, and have lasting impacts on a student’s future, including college and military eligibility.
What Parents/Guardians Should Know:
- Under Texas law, threats (even false ones) that cause fear, disrupt the school environment, or trigger an emergency response can be considered criminal offenses.
- A student can have consequences at school and with law enforcement, even if the threat was made from home.
- Jokes or offhand remarks like “I’m going to kill him” or “She’s so annoying, I hope she dies,” while sometimes are not technically threats, can still result in serious questioning and consequences.
- Sharing or reposting threats on social media, even without knowing if they’re real, is dangerous and could lead to consequences.
- If a student overhears a threat or sees something online that concerns them, they should report it to a trusted adult or use their school’s reporting tool. This is not being a “snitch,” it’s being responsible.
Resources for parents are available at: https://txssc.txstate.edu/tools/threats-are-no-joke-toolkit/1-teacher-parent-guides.html On this website parents can find out information about the law, what types of messages/texts can be considered threats, and the consequences from making a threat that is intended as a joke.
Tarkington ISD also encourages students and families to report threats or concerning information to district employees or SROs, or through the StopIt Anonymous Reporting website or mobile application.
Technology Department
We introduced Clever to you earlier this year as a single sign-on platform that gives students instant access to their curriculum apps, digital textbooks, and classroom tools, all in one place.
Here's how it works:
Students can now scan their ID badge at the login screen to access Clever, no typing, no passwords, just scan and go. This small but powerful feature is already making a big impact, especially for our younger students and those who log in multiple times a day. It’s all part of our goal to remove barriers and keep technology simple and accessible for every learner.
Why Clever Matters:
One login = access to everything they need
Works on Chromebooks, tablets, and at home
Keeps student accounts secure
Helps you stay connected to classroom tools at home
Now with ID badge login for even faster access
To try Clever at home, visit: Clever
Students can log in using their Tarkington ISD Google account or by scanning the QR code on their school ID badge. We’ll continue encouraging Clever use throughout the year as part of our district-wide strategy to simplify digital access and enhance instruction. Your support at home helps reinforce these tools and builds confidence for your student, thank you for being part of the team.
Transportation
All students should have received a bus pass by September 11, 2025 for the 2025–2026 school year. If your student has not yet received their bus pass, please contact the Transportation Department by email at transportation@tarkingtonisd.net or by phone at 281-592-0377 for assistance.
The first bus pass is provided at no cost. Students must have their bus pass with them when loading and unloading the bus and are required to wear it at all times while riding. These passes are an important part of student safety and help ensure proper identification for all bus riders.
If a replacement bus pass is needed, the cost will be $5 for the card, $1 for the lanyard, and $1 for the plastic sleeve. Payments may be submitted in an envelope to the student’s bus driver or paid directly at the Transportation Office. Once payment has been received, the Transportation Department will print the new bus pass and deliver it to the student on their next bus route.
Failure to wear the required identification may result in disciplinary action. After three instances of not having a bus pass during a single progress report period, students may face a bus suspension of up to three days.
The district is also piloting the Here Comes the Bus app on buses 15, 29, 36, and 37. Parents can sign up to receive bus alerts through this app by using the TISD Code 30241 along with their student’s ID number.
Finally, please remember that all students must be registered with the Transportation Department in order to ride the bus. Students who are not registered will not be permitted to ride.
