SMS Students Launch Into the Year with Words That Inspire
At Sunnyvale Middle School, Counselor Medina is guiding students through a meaningful project to kick off the new school year, choosing a personal Word of the Year.
To begin, students reflected on the past year by considering what went well and what challenges they faced. From there, they set intentions for the new year, identifying areas in which they hope to grow. Finally, they brainstormed words that capture their goals and mindset moving forward.
Each student left with a visual representation of their chosen word, designed to serve as a compass for their decisions and actions throughout the year. This activity encourages reflection, intentional goal-setting, and a growth mindset that will support students both inside and outside the classroom.
Meet Theo! Theo, a four-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, is a certified therapy dog and is bringing smiles and stress relief to campuses this year. Owned by SISD Instructional Coordinator Savannah Hollis, Theo visits during teacher breaks and planning times, brightens classrooms on request and helps ease student anxiety.
"Through Theo's visits, students also learn the difference between service and therapy dogs and how to approach dogs in public," Hollis said. "And of course, they want to know everything about Theo."
