CELC News & Updates

CELC Families,

What an amazing first three days of school. The buzz of laughter was louder that the few tears that we experienced. I am so proud of our students (and parents) for trusting our staff and settling into the school environment. The warm weather made the first days a school less active. The students did not spend time on the playground in the afternoons. We are looking forward to cooler temperatures and more time outside.

A huge thank you to the Creekside Cub for greeting our families on Wednesday! It is always a treat to have our Cub on campus. We lost track of the total number of high fives and hugs but they reached a number in the 100s.

We apologize for the increased traffic and parking issues. It is always busier the first week or two. Please be mindful of your speed and alertness while driving in our parking lot and on the surrounding streets. Not only do we have our 3-5 year old Cubs, we also have smaller siblings on our site at drop off and pick up. As a reminder, please do not park in the red zones in the front of the school or block the rolling gate. This creates a safety hazard, especially if there is an emergency.

This week, we will continue to follow the 1:22 p.m. release schedule. Thank you for entering the campus quietly to allow instruction to occur until the last minute. Students are learning routines and developing skills to help them become a successful student.

Please stay safe and dry while through these next few days on alert. Dr. Newman will keeping in communication with the principals over the next 24 hours on any weather related updates. We will make sure that families are updated if anything changes. Here is a link for information on ways to stay safe during rain and flooding. Also see Dr. Newman's communication below.

Here are a few updates to help keep you informed as we approach our first day of school:

  • Mark your calendars for picture day. See flyer below for more information.

  • Please see the information below about AUSD's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) below.

  • Our "normal" schedule begins on Monday, August 28th. See schedules below.

  • For the safety and security of students and staff, gates are locked during school hours.

  • AUSD will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students this school year.
  • Breakfast is available at the cafeteria at 8:35 a.m. daily. The kitchen closes at 8:55 a.m.
  • Students may choose to eat a cafeteria lunch or bring a sack lunch from home.
  • Please send your student to school each day with a backpack, refillable water bottle, a healthy snack, and a lunch (unless they are getting a cafeteria lunch).
  • Please include a change of clothes in a ziplock bag in their backpack. Potty accidents tend to happen early in the year. We have clothes on hand but having their own seems to make them feel more comfortable.
  • Although we have water filling stations, we like to have water bottles on hand for students that forget to bring a refillable bottle. Donations of water are always appreciated. You can drop them off in the office.

  • Please report any absences to your child's teacher and the office. Please let the office know the reason that your child is out and any symptoms if they are sick. Email Mary Barkely, our amazing Clerk or call the office at 619-659-8250.

  • We LOVE volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please pick up the required paperwork in the office.

  • We need PTA and School Site Council volunteers. If you are interested, please contact the office. Parents interested in PTA, please fill out the PTA Interest Survey.

  • We will be holding our first PTA meeting at Back to School Night. We hope to have our board nominated by then. The office will be reaching out to the parents that are interested in board positions.

  • Before and after school care is available. Please see the flyer below or contact Aimee Hatfield, AUSD's ESS Coordinator, at ahatfield@alpineschools.net if you have any questions.

  • For transportation questions, please visit AUSD's website at https://www.alpineschools.net/page/transportation

  • Please find us on FB and IG!

Our staff is looking forward a full week of learning and laughter.

Sincerely,

Tamara Ripke, Proud Principal

Messages from Dr. Newman

The following message was sent out by our Superintendent on Sunday, August 20, 2023:

Dear AUSD Families,

We want to keep you informed about the status of our school openings. We are closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions and staying up-to-date with all weather reports and alerts. We are also aware that San Diego Unified decided earlier today to close its schools tomorrow. The storm is expected to fully pass through our community in the early hours of tomorrow. We intend to have all our schools open tomorrow.

We understand that maintaining a consistent learning experience is of utmost importance. We also understand how much our families depend on our schools to provide a secure environment for their children throughout the workday. Consequently, we want to affirm our commitment to keeping our schools open as long as conditions permit.

Please rest assured that the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families are of paramount importance to us. We will continue to keep a watchful eye on the weather developments. We will make any necessary adjustments to our plans to ensure our students' best possible learning environment.

Please stay updated by checking district and school emails, social media, and school websites for further announcements. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The following message was sent out by our Superintendent on Friday, August 18, 2023:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you know, San Diego County may experience some intense weather this weekend because of Hurricane Hilary, which has formed in the Pacific Ocean, just south of Baja California. Although forecasters say it’s likely to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches our county, there is the potential for extreme weather, such as high winds, flash flooding, rain, and thunderstorms.

We will monitor the storm as it makes its way toward the region and will communicate with you through our regular channels if the storm impacts school facilities or operations.

We encourage you to sign up for Alert San Diego and visit the County of San Diego website to enhance your preparedness for storms and flooding. Please also download our District app, which is available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

AUSD LCAP

The Governor's budget for education mandated that every school district in California needs to update its Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is a component of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The LCAP is intended to be a three-year plan to improve student achievement by setting annual goals for the district in eight priority areas. Each of the priorities has established data requirements to track district progress improving student achievement. The LCAP requires Districts to gather input from students, teachers, parents, and community members to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the District. Our District staff worked together with all of our stakeholder groups to gather input and craft the draft of our Local Control Accountability Plan. Here are AUSD's 2023-24 LCAP Goals:

Goal #1: Effective Instruction and Curriculum - Provide equitable access to high-quality classroom curriculum and instruction in an inclusive environment that promotes student success.

Goal #2: Safe and Respectful Environments - Ensure all school sites are safe and have healthy and welcoming climates for staff, students, and their families so that all students feel connected and are motivated to attend and ready to learn.

Goal #3: Equitable and Culturally Responsible Systems - Ensure systems and processes eliminate barriers to student success and are equitable and culturally responsive to the needs of our students and their families.

Cubs in the Community

Mrs. Ripke will continue the Cubs in the Community tradition. Her goal is to connect with 100 Cubs (Future, Former, or Current) by the 100th day of school. Building relationships with our students is important to us! If you see Mrs. Ripke out in the community, encourage your student to say hi. Not only does it create an opportunity to connect, it also supports students' language and communication skills. Follow the sightings on FB and IG. Feel free to share our postings to spread the word. Mrs. Ripke (and the CELC staff) looks out for future, current, and former Cubs! She is ready to meet the 2023-24 challenge. See her latest sighting below!

CELC SCHEDULE FIRST 8 DAYS

CELC SCHEDULE BEGINNING 8/28/23

Recess and lunch times subject to change. All TK classes are released at 1:35 pm daily until winter break. TK moves to the full day kindergarten schedule on Tuesday, January 9th. Lunch and recess time subject to changed based on enrollment and site needs.

School Rules

CELC has three school rules. Students will be learning behavior expectations that are aligned with being safe, responsible, and respectful. We practice Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). We understand that our students are still learning to problem solve and deal with school expectations. We believe in progressive discipline and restorative practices. Teachers and staff document concerns and communicate them with parents to form a partnership in your child's success. We love our Cubs and are looking forward to having a year of fun, friendships, learning and laughter!
