Principal's Message
To quote Moana from the recent school production, "sometimes our strengths lie beneath the surface ... far beneath, in some cases." Which is a reminder that it takes effort and perseverance to find these strengths. The more effort needed, the more valuable the return. In many instances, these are surprising when discovered.
It takes courage to pursue, it takes faith to believe, it takes effort and perseverance. These strengths or gifts reside in all of us.
Therefore, thank you for your young people who make me forever grateful for the privilege to see these moments on a daily basis. The Relay for Life, met and exceeded their target of raising $10,000 for the Cancer Society. The Moana production, which warmed the hearts of all that came to the shows. The van load of Year 9 students who had a Māori language assessment requiring them to order their lunch in Māori in town yesterday. The football match played at lunchtime on the last day of this term.
Enjoy the company of our young people over the term break and together let's remind them on a daily basis of what Moana said. Let's rock the third term!
Te Māramatanga tuatahi, Ubi Lux praelucet, where the light first shines.
Thank you, mauri ora.

GIRLS IN HIGH VIS
Some of our students attended the “Girls in High Vis” day held at Downer NZ.
This was an excellent opportunity for our students to see other wahine who have made a career within the blue collar industry. They were able to experience different types of machinery and areas within the industry.
Relay for Life
As part of an effort by our prefect group to raise $10,000 for the NZ Cancer Society a Relay For Life was held at school. The relay started at midday on Friday 17th June and ended at midday on Saturday. The main idea was to celebrate cancer survivors in our community, remember loved ones who have been lost and fight against cancer by raising crucial funds.
Our baton was carried around the track from 12.30pm on Friday to 12.30pm on Saturday, which symbolised our community's unstoppable fight against cancer. The event kicked off with a first lap completed by some survivors from Lytton, as well as others who have lost loved ones to cancer.
From 12.30pm-2pm on Friday we had most of the school out on the field supporting our event. We had bubble balls running, a “dunk the teacher”, tug of war, a vertical bungee, food and of course a constant flow of people around the track.
Mr Hooper shaved his head to help us raise money and we sold tickets for the chance to shave his head.
Throughout Friday night teachers came every hour to show their support and prefects took turns doing laps throughout the night. Rhiannon and I are very proud to be head prefects of Lytton High School, and even prouder of our team that came together to make this event happen. We are also very grateful for the support we have received from the school.
We managed to raise $10,000 for the Cancer Society in less than a month (25 days). This goal took a lot of time and energy from everyone who was involved but it was well worth it. I have been assured by the staff at our local Cancer Society branch that this money will make a huge impact on those fighting cancer in our community and allow them to offer 'wrap around care'.
Year 12 - 13 Building Academy
Basic skills were developed in the making of BBQ tables for the courtyard. They have now progressed to constructing their own classroom with the final outcome to be building two bedroom homes for Kainga Ora.
Outdoor Education
On Wednesday of Week 2 the Year 13 Outdoor Education students took off to Lake
Waikaremoana. With part of the Great Walk track closed due to the recent flooding and
high lake levels the students had to plan their alternative route as part of their
assessment. The group decided on a challenging first day tramp of 17km up and over
Panekire Bluff to the lakeside Waiopaoa Hut. It was a wet and physically demanding
day. There were no views to be enjoyed at the top, only sore legs on the way down. The
students, however, had planned for this and displayed excellent resilience, self and
group management, each successfully leading and navigating the group for a section of
the hike. On arrival at the hut a compulsory wash in the lake was enforced followed by
group cooked meals, camp stories and games around the fire. With the most
demanding of the 3 days completed, Day 2 meant time for a spot of morning fishing.
Unfortunately only a jersey fish was caught. With a nutritious meal in their bellies,
students hiked 8km back up where they’d come from to Panekire Hut sitting 1180m
above sea level. Still no views and with a forecast of 3 degrees overnight the focus was
on getting the fire roaring, keeping warm and well fed. The morning of day 3 was misty
and cold however as the students began to descend back down Te Maunga the skies
started to clear. It turned into a beautiful bluebird day with spectacular views across the
lake at both Bald Knob and Panekire Bluff. Tāwhirimātea had rewarded the students for
their hard work and good planning.

Kia Manawanui
Kia Manawanui is strengthening our knowledge of local curriculum through Education Outside the Classroom. In term 2 we have been exploring the Maori history of Te Tairawhiti. We visited significant landmarks that hold stories of the arrival of the Horouta waka and its people.
2022 Prefect Camp - Rotorua
Last week the prefects attended a GRIP conference in Rotorua where we learnt about leadership, teamwork and public speaking. At the GRIP Conference we all enjoyed being involved with the activities and were all engaged in learning about how to become more efficient with different ways to improve our school. We used the things we learnt when planning the Relay for Life.
The trip was very educational and helped us to realise the importance of getting everyone involved to improve our school and its standards. This year our head prefects organised a team building activity for us. The aim of the activity was for everyone to work together to achieve a common goal, we heard positive conversations and teamwork being used.
We also went white water rafting where we all had to be aware of the group's safety, this was another situation where we had to work together as a team and support each other. After the GRIP conference we did a group bonding experience where we had to work together to block off holes in this PVC pipe where it would flow out. We all had to work together to prevent the water flow and our goal was to fill it up to the halfway point, we all stepped out of our comfort zone and succeeded in the task. After the conference we were able to do the Redwoods Tree walk to experience the privileges and rewards of being a prefect. It was a beautiful experience because of the history and scenery.
In conclusion we all enjoyed our experience with our prefect camp in Rotorua and recommend it to future students. We all found some of the challenges difficult but were able to overcome them by using great communication and cooperation.

Eugene's Corner
Basketball - We finally made the tip off with our Senior Boys playing Wednesdays and Junior Boys and Senior Girls Friday evenings at Gisborne Boys High School and YMCA respectively. The game between Ritana Seniors v GBHS B was a corker. After a handy first quarter lead by Ritana, there was a certain feel to the game. Their lead was right there until the start of the 4th quarter when their wheels started to fall off. GBHS produced a comeback of the game so far and with 1 minute to go, lead for the first and only time in the match 59 – 57. But Ritana had more in them than I thought to take the lead back to end 59 – 61. I know you couldn’t script it any better. Well Coached by Bronson and Tamara Hedge, ka mau te wehi. Congratulations to GBHS B who went on to win the league.
Our Junior Boys in one game had the bare 5 with one substitution, against 12. Their instruction was to drive to the basket, draw a foul and get a rest at the free throw line. I cannot recall the game much, other than we lead in the first quarter. Unbelievable, until fatigue crept in the following quarters along with team fouls and the game got away from us. But those six did me proud. Ka rawe koutou.
Our Senior Girls Basketball Team on paper look the goods and I reckon hard to beat. However, our first game is always a warm up and Campion was lucky they had us on our first game. Coach Melissa Mackey-Huriwai has the girls sorted and as a result the following games have since been in Lytton’s favor.
Football – The call went out to sign up for a Girls Football Tournament team and you wouldn’t believe we got 18. The Girls are now registered to take part in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Maurice Hulme Football Tournament, to be held in Rotorua at the end of August. This team is coached by Hollie Murrell and managed by Sabrina Street. Good luck with your preparations.
Hockey - Coach David Preddey should have the luxury of 19 odd players to choose from, but with illness hitting the team during the term, we were scratching for subs. This gave rise to a slow start to the competition. The uncertainty of a natural goalie, gave Chicaine Tarawa, Khanh Welson and Rhearne Tarawa opportunity to don the outfit and make a difference.
Netball – Netball couldn’t come soon enough for some students. They would get a netball from me during interval and lunch to practice with friends. So after trials and some grading games, we finally settled on a Senior A, Y10s, Y9s Mix and a Senior Mixed Team in the Gisborne Netball competition. Now, we are at the business end of the competition, meaning, semifinals followed by finals that will take us to the end of the term. I will report on our progress as it comes to hand.
Rugby – This year we once again had to merge with Nga Uri a Maui and Campion College to become – Turanganui a Kiwa (TNAK).
U18s – Lytton has provided 12 members to the squad during the league. We seem to have found our straps in the second part of the round and now pose a threat with our expansive style of rugby, meaning winning our set plays, creating dominance in the loose with two on one plays and support of the ball carrier. Many thanks to Coach Mark Naden for giving of his time and expertise. Ka rawe o mahi.
U15s – Lytton has 8 members added to this TNAK squad. Each have played their part in this combination of all sorts from Hawaiki Hou, Whatatutu, Lytton, NUAM, Campion College. They are playing winning rugby and as a result have a lead in the competition.
Kei runga noa atu koe Coach Ropoama Hape.
Indoor Bowls – Coach Andrew Rickard has a squad of 10 and is preparing them as best he can with drills and possible games scenarios that the squad is more likely to come across. The team is away to the North Island Secondary Schools Indoor Bowls Tournament at Mount Maunganui next term. All the best.
Clay Shooting – This sport is disciplinary, meaning one has to be cool, calm and collected. Immovable, steadfast and firm. If this sounds like you then come and have a go. You could be the next Brandon Reynolds or Tamanui Jones or George Bodle.
