What a great week in second grade!

We wrapped up our social studies unit on maps, continents, and oceans and began exploring landforms. We also started a class project that we’re excited to continue working on next week! Take a peek below to see what else we’ve been learning and what’s coming up in our classroom.

This Week in ELAR:

This week in ELAR, we focused on reading multisyllabic words and applying the magic e rule to longer words, such as pinecone. We read and discussed stories, looking closely at how the setting impacts the characters and events. We are learning that the setting does more than tell us where and when a story happens—it can help shape what happens! In writing, we continued practicing complete sentences and adding adjectives and adverbs to make our writing more detailed and descriptive. We also began exploring fairy tales, which will connect to our upcoming Declamations. More information about this exciting connection is coming soon!

Our high-frequency words this week were: one, by, were, what, all, words, your, said, there, and each.

This Week in MATH:

This past week in Math class, we continued adding three-digit numbers with regrouping in the tens place. We practiced this by using different strategies, namely the "add ten then subtract" rule of thumb. Although this particular method helped many students solve addition equations quicker, we must remember to show our work by providing all necessary steps. Let's always remember our end goal...to successfully solve multi-digit addition equations by using the standard addition algorithm, or in Lehman's terms, the stacking method. We also practiced our doubles facts, reviewed "carrying" techniques, and played a few homemade dice games in order to best build fact fluency while having fun!

Looking ahead in MATH:

Next week in Math, we'll continue adding by regrouping in both the ones and tens place. And our final chapter two module (#6), will involve adding four two-digit numbers at the same time! After we finish chapter two, we'll dive in head first to our chapter review, then an assessment. *This will of course be announced the week prior to the test. I plan on implementing more small groups into our rotation mix this upcoming week, in order to best support my kiddos. I surely love small group rotations, for I get to witness each student shine as they discover and embrace their individual potential!

Looking Ahead in ELAR:

Next week in ELAR, we’re bringing a little fairy-tale magic to our writing! We’ll work on creating our own fairy tales, using complete sentences and descriptive details to bring our characters and settings to life. We’ll also learn about plural nouns and when to add -s or -es to show more than one. From one castle to two castles and one wish to three wishes, we’ll connect our spelling practice to our storytelling!

Our high-frequency words will be: one, by, were, what, all, words, your, said, there, and each. Please continue practicing these words along with our previous words at home!

Our next test will be Thursday, October 15th!!

What is Happening in Science/STEM? (From Mrs. Mertz)

Students are excited to learn about our planet Earth’s water! We began last week wondering why the Earth has different colors. Is it true that our water is the same water the dinosaurs swam in? Students started exploring our planet and coloring each square on a world map to identify if the space was water by coloring it blue, and they colored the squares that contained land green. Students will record their data and then compare and contrast to see the difference between land and water on our planet. Students will also begin to learn about specific bodies of water that surround us and classify them as salt water or fresh water and locate them on a map. .

Academic Language We Are Using This Week:

ocean, river, pond, stream, glacier, lake
