Message From the Principal Message From the Principal

Dear Wildwood Families,

I hope you are all doing well and taking care of yourselves. With the frightening and tragic situation in Southern California, it’s hard to keep it business as usual here. I imagine that some of you are directly affected, having friends or family down in the LA Area. When there are challenging times, it’s good for our kids to keep a routine and structure, so they feel safe and comforted. So that’s what we’re doing here.

Ms. Sears’ 3rd grade class came up with the idea of a school read-a-thon to raise money to help the folks down south, via the World Central Kitchen. The information is below and a packet will be sent home with your child today. We are asking for the pledge sheets to be returned to school (no money, please) so we can get a general idea of how much money Wildwood is pledging to help the organization and celebrate our hard work. If you can support this effort, we appreciate it! If it’s too much, we also understand. Families are busy!

Karen Gnusti, Ms. G., started at Wildwood last week. She is the co-principal and will be here on Thursdays and Fridays. We had a school-wide assembly on Wednesday to introduce Ms. G. On Friday, she visited classrooms and introduced herself to the students and staff. We appreciate how welcoming everyone has been and flexible with the changes here at Wildwood. Ms. G and I are in regular communication all week and are coordinating work here. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, brhine@piedmont.k12.ca.us and/or Ms. G, kgnusti@piedmont.k12.ca.us. Wildwood is a wonderful place to be and although things were a little rocky for a quick minute, we are back on track and getting into some good routines. I appreciate everyone’s support and patience during this time of transition.

Don’t forget, this Monday, 1/20/25, is a holiday in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. No school on Monday.

Thanks for all you do to support Wildwood Elementary!

School Wide Read-a-Thon School Wide Read-a-Thon

Dear Wildwood Families,

We are excited to announce a unique initiative that embodies the spirit of community and compassion in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will be launching a School-Wide Read-a-Thon to raise funds for the World Central Kitchen, helping to feed those impacted by the devastation from the Los Angeles wildfires.

WCK is first on the frontlines, providing meals and responding to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. When disaster strikes, WCK’s Relief Team mobilizes to the frontlines with the urgency to start cooking and providing meals to people in need. By partnering with organizations on the ground and activating a network of food trucks or emergency kitchens, WCK provides freshly made, nutritious meals to communities impacted by disasters quickly and effectively. We know that good food provides nourishment, comfort, and hope, especially in times of crisis.

Event Details:

  • Start Date: Monday, January 20th

  • End Date: Sunday, January 26th

During this week, students can read as much as possible, seek sponsorship from family and friends, and contribute to a meaningful cause. This event will promote literacy and a love for reading and help us unite as a community to support those in need.

How It Works:

  • Get Sponsored: Students will ask family and friends to sponsor them for every book or page they read during the read-a-thon.

  • Read: Students can choose books of their liking and read at home or during designated reading times at school.

  • Collect Donations: After the read-a-thon, students will collect and submit the pledged donations to the school.

Suggested Donation Amounts

For Kindergarten to 2nd Grade:

  • $0.50 per book: Encourages young readers to participate.

  • $2 for 4 books: A fun challenge for early readers.

  • $5 flat donation: Simple and straightforward for sponsors.

  • $10 for a week of reading or a more substantial contribution for those who can support more.

For 3rd to 5th Grade:

  • $2 per book: This is a great option for students who may read several books.

  • $5 for 5 books: Encourages students to read more.

  • $15 flat donation: Simple and straightforward for sponsors.

  • $20 for a week of reading: A more substantial contribution for those who want to support more.

  • $50 or more: For generous sponsors who want to make a bigger impact.

Thank you for supporting our Read-a-thon! Please complete the information on the link below and have your child return it to their classroom teacher.

By 7 pm on January 26th, please log on to The World Central Kitchen donation site to donate. Please return the pledge form to your child’s teacher so we can celebrate as a school at the close of this fundraiser.

Thank you for your support and participation in this important event. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by the wildfires while fostering a love for reading in our students.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Joanie Sears.

We would like to thank PHS Senior and Eagle Scout, Tommy Ashton, for repainting the fading lines in the kindergarten playground for his Eagle Scout project! He and his PHS crew did a great job and gave the yard a refreshed new look! Thank you, Tommy!

Lunchtime Lunchtime

Do you know what your child eats at lunch time? Well, you might be surprised. Some kids skip their lunch entirely, and some just pick out the items they like. I had one student eat a candy cane for lunch. For those who get school lunch, sometimes they eat it, sometimes they don’t. We are out there during lunch, supervising students and encouraging them to eat. But we can’t force them. It might be worth a conversation with your child about eating lunch and how it helps them to have energy for the second half of the day. Thank you!

Vision and Hearing Screening Vision and Hearing Screening

Hearing and Vision Screenings Coming up at Wildwood School

Students in grades K, 2, 5 and all new students will undergo state required hearing and vision screenings on Wednesday, February 5th. If your student wears glasses or contacts, please make sure they wear them or bring them to school.

If you do not wish to have your child participate in these screenings and would like to provide your own hearing and vision assessment report through an outside provider, please contact the District Nurses at nurses@piedmont.k12.ca.us. Thank you!

This is a wonderful opportunity for those students who want to honor Dr. King, and to practice their public speaking skills. Performance selections should relate to Martin Luther King Jr. and the theme of Speak and Inspire. The celebration will be on February 12 *PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE* , 2025 at a school assembly.

Guidelines

  • Open to all students, Kindergarten through 5th grade.

  • Students can perform alone or with a group.

  • Performances are limited to two to four minutes.

If your child is interested in performing, here is the permission form that needs to be completed and turned in.

Calling all artists and writers! The Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee (PADC) invites all K-12 students to share personal art or writing inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The art and writing will be showcased at Piedmont’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20. (Check out last year’s amazing work!). All participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of 10 gift cards to Mulberry’s. The deadline is Wednesday, January 15.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Separate is Never Equal: Fight Injustice!” Students are asked to create a piece of art or writing in response to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s quote:

In a speech in March 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called on people to never feel comfortable with any form of segregation, tyranny, or supremacy: “I never intend to adjust myself to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few.”

What does this message mean to you?

Art should be made on 8.5. X 11 paper; writing should be limited to one page. It can be dropped off at the front office of your school or uploaded to PADC’s website. Please include your name somewhere on your work. If you are dropping it off, please fill out and attach this form.
