What Do Great Referees Do?
March Madness and the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament are continuing this weekend. Referees are integral parts of each game to help ensure that players are safe and the game is fair. As parents and teachers, we have similar goals for our children. What can we learn from referees that may help us lead our little ones? 1. Refs see the fouls. They are observant and notice when things aren't right. They can impartially see a foul no matter what player commits it. They have clarity to see what is and what isn't a foul. They would be useless if they closed their eyes and never looked at what was happening. As parents and teachers, we have to see what our children are doing and saying. While we are always looking for the good in them, we also have to be willing to see their mistakes and poor choices. 2. Refs blow the whistle and make the call. When a ref sees the infraction, he/she stops the game and calls attention to the foul. Refs bring it to the attention of the player and let's him know what he did wrong. Whether or not she agrees, the ref still makes the call. As needed, refs confer with each other (and check instant replay) to be sure they made the right call. We would be wise to do the same as we correct our children. We always want to be sure we have all the facts about a situation as we call out our kids' poor choices. 3. Refs assign the consequence. They decide if it needs to be major or minor based on the nature of the foul. They know if one or two or more players should receive the penalty. They call on their prior training to know what consequence is appropriate for the infraction committed. As adults, our goal in discipline is to change behavior. It is to teach and correct, not to simply punish. We know we chose the right consequence when we see that it helps change the behavior. Discipline is always an act of love. It helps our kids know the boundaries that keep them (and others) safe and healthy. I am sure that refs are concerned about the players' best interest. Like them, we want to be sure that our children know that we love them on their good days and their bad days. They need to hear from us that making a bad decision does not make them inherently "bad." A poor choice should never determine one's identity. Let's commit to model a balance between responsibility, accountability, and grace for our kids. I think we hope that others will do the same for us, too.
Strength and Blessings to You,
Mr. Maness
