Curriculum Night Announcement 📑🔬 Curriculum Night Announcement 📑🔬

Thank you for sharing your feedback following our recent Open House. Many of you expressed a desire for more information about what is happening in the classrooms, particularly around curriculum and instruction. We hear you, and we agree that parents deserve a deeper look into the daily learning experiences of our students.

In response, we will be hosting a Curriculum Night in the near future. This evening will be dedicated to instruction, giving you an inside look at your child’s classroom, the curriculum being taught, and how learning comes to life at Parker. More details, including the date and schedule, will be shared soon.

I also want to acknowledge that our last Open House did not provide the level of clarity and preparation our families expected. Teachers had only just received updated information a day prior, and I did not allow adequate time for them to prepare to answer your questions thoroughly. That is on me as principal, and I own that reflection. Moving forward, I am committed to ensuring our teachers are fully supported and equipped so that events like this meet your expectations.

In addition, based on the recent poll shared in the Parker Pulse, I will be hosting a special Chat & Chew focused specifically on curriculum on Thursday, September 11th at 8:00 AM. To honor everyone’s time, this will be the only topic of discussion for this session. Please note that this date and time will not replace the originally scheduled September Chat & Chew; that session will still be held as planned.

I am grateful for your partnership and your honesty. Together, we will make Curriculum Night—and these ongoing conversations—a meaningful way to strengthen the connection between home and school.

Field Trips at Parker: Expanding Learning Beyond the Classroom Field Trips at Parker: Expanding Learning Beyond the Classroom

Over the summer, HISD streamlined the process for how schools request and fund these experiences. While the guidelines have shifted, our commitment at Parker remains the same: students will continue to enjoy rich, engaging learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Here are the key things to know:

  • Educational Focus: All field trips must be directly connected to grade-level TEKS, ensuring every experience enhances classroom learning.

  • Planning Ahead: Teachers must submit requests at least 30 days in advance, allowing time for proper planning and approvals.

  • Free for Families: Field trips must be free to all students and families.

  • Funding Sources: Trips may be financed through campus Title I funds, the school budget, PTO/Booster support, grants, or donations. Donations and grants must follow HISD guidelines (link here), so these will need to be submitted before trip requests.

To support this transition, our Parker PTO is stepping up to help fund trips where grade-level budgets may fall short. More information will be coming soon from PTO about how families can get involved and support.

At Parker, each grade level will continue our expectation of hosting at least two field trips in the fall and two in the spring to extend student learning. While the process looks different this year, our goal has not changed: we will not limit our students’ experiences—we will continue to create memorable and meaningful learning opportunities together.

Gifted and Talented (G/T) Programming at Parker 🧠 Gifted and Talented (G/T) Programming at Parker 🧠

We are committed to providing our Gifted and Talented (G/T) students with the challenging, engaging experiences they deserve. This school year, HISD has shifted from individual student G/T plans to Campus-Based G/T Plans. Each campus selects how services will be delivered from district-approved options, and at Parker we are excited to launch a stronger, more consistent G/T program than ever before.

What G/T Looks Like at Parker:

  • Embedded Extension in Core Lessons: Teachers are incorporating G/T extension questions and activities directly into Tier I instruction.

  • Dedicated G/T Pull-Outs: G/T students will be pulled during the school day, on a regular cadence during ENCORE, for targeted enrichment opportunities. Students will work with a dedicated G/T teacher and a cohort of peers to collaborate on advanced learning tasks and projects.

What is Gifted and Talented?
The state defines a gifted/talented student as a child or youth who demonstrates—or shows the potential for—remarkably high achievement compared to peers of the same age, experience, or environment. G/T students may:

  • Exhibit high performance in intellectual, creative, or artistic areas;

  • Possess an unusual capacity for leadership; or

  • Excel in a specific academic field.

In alignment with the State of Texas our Parker goal for G/T services is that students will demonstrate self-directed learning, critical thinking, research, and communication skills. They will also produce innovative products and sophisticated performances that reflect individuality, creativity, and real-world application.

Our Commitment at Parker
As I have mentioned several times last school year -- in past years, Parker has not consistently provided robust G/T services to our students. That changes this year. The creation of our ENCORE time was intentional—to ensure G/T students receive dedicated instructional time without compromising their Tier I learning. Instead of working on G/T Expo projects primarily at home, students will now have structured school time to design and create.

We are thrilled to announce that G/T Expo Capstone projects will begin Friday, September 12th.

Parents, get ready to see some truly innovative and creative work from our Parker Lions!

Together, we are raising the bar for our G/T program and cannot wait to showcase the amazing things our students will accomplish this year.

After School Care Program – Important Information After School Care Program – Important Information

We are fortunate to have an After School Care (ASC) program available on the Parker campus, operated fully by our Parker PTO. While ASC takes place at Parker Elementary and many of our staff members work in the program, please note that it is not managed by the school administration.

The PTO serves as the “contractor” for this service, which means all questions regarding discipline, payments, curriculum, policies, or daily procedures must be directed to the ASC team, not the school office.

  • ASC Coordinator: Robin Gibson – rgibson@houstonisd.org

  • PTO President: Jeanette Mueller – president@parkerpto.org

As principal, I remain responsible for the overall safety of everyone on campus. If a safety concern arises, or if a matter from the school day carries over into ASC (or vice versa), I will step in to support.

We are happy to partner with our PTO in making ASC a safe and welcoming place for students, but it is important for families to know that this program is under PTO governance, not Parker Elementary administration.

Spending time with Justice! 🐕 Spending time with Justice! 🐕

We had an awesome visit from Office Bennett and his certified therapy dog, Justice!

Officer Bennett and Justice visited Ms. Almonte, Ms. Gibson and Ms. Gaddison classrooms during their CCR time talking about wellness. The children loved learning how a service dog and handler provide emotional support for children and adults going through difficult times. They also experienced how simple acts of kindness brighten our days. The children loved learning that Justice is hypoallergenic.

Since his fur doesn’t shed, he is perfect for people who are allergic to dogs. Children were thrilled to treat Justice with his favorite treat, letting people pet him and getting tummy rubs. We hope Officer Bennett can continue to come visit other classrooms and grade levels at Parker. So, watch out for him! You might be the lucky classroom next time.
