One School, Many Cultures!
On Friday, March 21st, OLHMS was transformed into a vibrant tapestry of cultures as students and staff came together for this year’s International Fest, spearheaded by Ms. Yusra Maan. The event marked a week of spirited celebrations, culminating in a day filled with learning, performances, and the joy of embracing diversity.
"I-Fest is a day rooted in celebrating our unique cultural diversity here at OLHMS. This day is truly a remarkable one where students get to share pieces of themselves with one another and celebrate how our differences can truly make us Mustangs United! In this 123rd year of District 123, I-Fest is truly a definition of our theme of "U Belong!" - Ms. Maan, iFest Sponsor and 7th grade ELA teacher
Presentation of Flags & CORE Class Activities
The day begins with a Parade of Flags, each flag representing students and staff at OLHMS. This ceremony is also reminiscent of the Olympic Games, symbolizing the global unity of nations. During Core classes, students engage in playing games from different cultures, watching films featuring diverse casts and stories of resilience and triumph, and a "Create Your Own Country" project.

Exploring Cultural Games and Activities
Throughout the day, Encore classes explored student-led country presentations that shared cool facts, rich traditions, and unique customs from cultures around the world. Students simply listening to the presentations and engaging in the activities in their classrooms also benefit from learning about communities other than their own, or being excited to see their culture represented. It opens their eyes to the world around them and the peers they sit next to each and every day.
An integral part of the celebration was the spirited participation in cultural games from different corners of the world. Students played games like Corre, Corre la guaraca from Chile, Pilolo from Ghana, Semut, Orang, Gajah from Indonesia, and Morra from Egypt, Greece, and Italy, among others, embracing the diversity of recreational activities enjoyed worldwide.
Live Student Performances
One of the most anticipated and captivating moments of the day unfolded in the buzzing cafetorium, where International Fest came to life through a dazzling showcase of live performances. Student performers lit up the stage with dances representing Mexico, India, Pakistan, Hawaii, Latin America, and even pop culture, each one celebrating the beauty and rhythm of their heritage. The energy was electric as every performance brought something unique and heartfelt to the spotlight. Adding to the excitement, the audience was treated to a powerful guest performance by Thawra Dabke, whose traditional Palestinian dance had the entire room cheering. Together, these performances transcended boundaries, reminding us all of the vibrant diversity that makes the OLHMS community so special.
OLHMS Gets Global with Films and Languages
Film screenings provided another avenue for cultural exploration and reflection. Students watched a variety of films, each offering poignant messages and valuable lessons. Sixth graders were captivated by "Pelé: The Birth of a Legend," seventh graders immersed themselves in "McFarland USA," while eighth graders were inspired by "Queen of Katwe," experiencing storytelling from different corners of the world. Language also took center stage as students delved into the linguistic nuances of Arabic, Spanish, and Urdu, gaining a deeper appreciation for the diverse languages spoken across continents.

Representation Matters!
Ms. Maan expressed her pride in the students’ dedication, noting, "With nearly 100 students involved in planning, presenting, and performing, the 2025 International Fest truly highlighted the power of student leadership. Whether through teaching their classmates about different countries, creating interactive presentations, or expressing themselves through dance, these students embodied the spirit of inclusivity and pride in their heritage. Now more than ever, our students understand the power of sharing their identities and celebrating differences. Being proud of who we are and truly embracing our diversity surpasses any content."
Around the World in One Day!
International Fest at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School served as a poignant reminder of the beauty and strength found in cultural diversity, reinforcing the importance of fostering understanding and respect for all cultures within our global community. As the day drew to a close, students left with hearts full of appreciation and minds enriched with newfound knowledge, ready to embrace the world with open arms.
The success of International Fest would not have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of nearly 100 student volunteers who orchestrated interactive presentations, enriching the experience for the entire school community.
As OLHMS continues to foster a community where every culture is valued and respected, International Fest serves as a reminder that our differences make us stronger. No matter our backgrounds, languages, or beliefs, we come together as one to celebrate the beauty of our diverse school family.
