Leading the Way: 8th Grade Leadership Retreat
Being an eighth grader at St. Luke’s comes with something special: the opportunity and responsibility to lead.
Last week, our Class of 2027 traveled to Mustang Island Conference Center in Port Aransas, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, for our annual 8th Grade Leadership Retreat. Away from school and routines, this time is intentionally created for our students to reflect on what leadership looks like, how they want to show up for one another, and the legacy they hope to leave behind.
Throughout the retreat, students were guided through activities and conversations centered on teamwork, communication, character, and community. Our eighth graders were challenged to think beyond titles and positions and to recognize that leadership often happens in the small moments: stepping in when someone feels left out, setting the tone when others are watching, encouraging younger students, and choosing to do what is right even when it’s not the easiest choice. Everyone can be a leader.
At the same time, the retreat is designed to provide students with time to simply enjoy their time together, which becomes increasingly rare in the busyness of the school year. They laughed, collaborated, challenged one another, and strengthened relationships that will carry them through their final year at St. Luke’s.
One of the advantages of a PK3-8 school is that our eighth grade students are the leaders of our campus. At St. Luke's, leadership is so much more than something we teach in a classroom. No one knows this better than our eighth grade students. Leadership takes shape in their daily lives: in chapel, as teammates, classmates, chapel buddies, student leaders, and role models for younger Tigers. Whether they realize it or not, our community is watching them and learning from the example they set.
Being an 8th grader is as much a celebration as it is a calling. For years, they have been guided by the St. Luke’s Way, shaped by people and experiences that have helped them grow. Now, they have the unique opportunity to turn around and help lead the way for those who will follow in their footsteps.

Girls Lacrosse is coming to St. Luke’s! 🥍
Thanks to growing interest from our St. Luke’s families, we’re excited to introduce Girls Lacrosse for 1st–4th grade! SLES parent McLean Russell is working alongside Athletic Director Ed Burton to bring this exciting new opportunity to the Hilltop.
Girls lacrosse is a fast-paced, non-contact sport that builds confidence, coordination, agility, and camaraderie. And with many players in San Antonio learning the game together, no previous lacrosse experience is necessary!
The girls lacrosse season runs in the Spring, and we’ll be sharing more information at a later date. In the meantime, if your child is interested in playing, please fill out the interest form below!
This year will serve as a pilot season for girls lacrosse at St. Luke’s. We’re excited to see our students embrace the sport, build a team, and grow together. If the program is a successful fit for our community, we look forward to continuing to build and offer lacrosse at St. Luke’s in the years ahead.
Practices and games will not conflict with other St. Luke’s sports. Games will be held on weekends, allowing our Tigers to participate in multiple sports throughout the year.
We can’t wait to see our Tigers take the field!
Strategic Planning Survey
Help Shape the Future of St. Luke's
St. Luke’s is beginning an exciting new Strategic Planning process, and we want to hear from our community! A strategic planning survey is now open for families, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to share what they value most about St. Luke’s and what they hope to see in our future.
Your voice matters. Take a few minutes to complete the survey and help shape the next chapter of St. Luke’s.
Want to learn more? Listen to our latest State of the School podcast with Head of School Mike Jenkins for an inside look at the strategic planning process and what’s ahead for St. Luke’s.

Week 4: Encouragement Over Praise
This semester, Rachel Sanborn’s Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Snapshot will feature weekly, parent-friendly takeaways from Jessica Lahey’s book The Gift of Failure. Mrs. Sanborn, along with Student Achievement Coordinator, Donna Finch will wrap up the series with a book talk during the December 1st Parent Council Coffee.
There is a difference between saying, “You’re so smart!” and saying, “You worked really hard on that.” Lahey encourages us to focus less on labeling our children and more on encouraging their effort, strategies, persistence, and growth. Instead of making success about being “good” or “smart,” we can help children notice how they accomplished something. Try phrases like, “What helped you figure that out?” or “I noticed you kept trying even when it was frustrating.” This helps children see themselves as capable learners.

Sunday School & Fall Faith Formation Continues
Fall faith formation continues throughout the season with eight Sundays of opportunities for children and youth to learn, grow, and connect in community during the 10 a.m. formation hour. Join us this Sunday and throughout the fall for Sunday morning formation, along with Youth Group on Sunday evenings.
Children
Godly Play | Pre-K–2nd Grade - Room 201
Through storytelling, wondering, and hands-on materials, Godly Play gives younger children space to experience the stories of our faith in a way designed especially for them.
Bible and Faith Lessons | 3rd–5th Grade - Room 201
Older elementary students will journey through the stories of the Bible, building a stronger understanding of Scripture and discovering how these stories connect to their faith and everyday lives.
Youth
Exploring Scripture - Youth Room
Explore the books of the Bible through close reading and discussion, while considering the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which these texts were written.
Evening Youth Group - Sundays, 5 - 6:30 p.m.
Middle school youth gather from 5-6 p.m., followed by dinner from 6–6:30 p.m. This fall, youth are reading Absalom Jones: America's First Black Priest, a graphic novel exploring the life and legacy of Absalom Jones—from being born into slavery to becoming the first African American priest in the Episcopal Church. His story offers guidance and inspiration as youth explore the history of the Church and what it means to follow Jesus through faithful, selfless living in the way of love.
Mission: St. Luke's Episcopal School is a Christian community, dedicated to academic and personal excellence, lifelong learning, and service to others.
The St. Luke's Way: As members of a Christian community, our conduct is guided by love and respect for God, our School, our neighbors, and ourselves. We demonstrate the St. Luke's Way through behavior that is courteous and cooperative.
