AVID stands for Advancement, Via, Individual Determination.

When schools partner with AVID, they receive professional development, a suite of resources, and ongoing support to ensure a lasting impact that maximizes their return on investment.

AVID provides scaffolded support that educators and students need to encourage college and career readiness and success.

In RISD, the AVID elective is a part of every secondary campus and 17 elementary campuses. We are committed to insisting on rigor, breaking down barriers, aligning the work and advocating for students to support the Graduate Profile.

Scholars learn the tools and skills needed for any future path you might choose. This elective class is dedicated to making you ready to enter the world of work as an elite graduate scholar by increasing your organization, time management, and effective communication skills. Through Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading, scholars are exposed to real world connections, opportunities for effective communication, critical thinking and financial scenarios to better plan their future.

We believe in RISD

The AVID Elective is the safe learning elective that provides the time and opportunity for students to have student agency as they take on the content courses of the day. Part of the rigorous academic prep work includes teaching communication, collaboration, organization and time management skills. Through grade checks, tutorials and high expectations, students find success in their academics and life as scholar.

What if I plan to attend a Magnet School?

Please indicate this choice on your application. If you get into AVID on your home campus, then you are in AVID in RISD.

Do I have to stay in AVID every year?

No, each year, you make the choice and choose AVID.

What if I don't choose AVID in 7th Grade?

That is ok, you can contact your counselor or AVID coordinator when you are choosing classes for 8th Grade.

Can I apply and change my mind later?

Yes! If you change your mind or choose a different elective, you can go that route.

But you have to apply and be accepted in order to choose AVID at any time.

How will I know if I got in to the elective?

You will receive a letter in your FOCUS account along with Magnet School, GT and other Middle School/Junior High placement Information. The letter will indicate if you are accepted or waitlisted before Choice Card Deadlines in February. After you receive this information, you will know if you are able to select AVID on your Middle School Choice Card.
