The SMS Press
December 28 2023
Out with the old and in with the new. As we say goodbye to 2023 and welcome 2024, it can be valuable to reflect back on the past year. We like this activity because it's really fun (and meaningful!) to remember the year one month at a time rather than just thinking about major events. Perhaps your family experienced loss during the past year. Reflecting and honoring those experiences can be healing. You can find the Remembering the Year Activity here.
Even though our students are young, so many have lost a parent or a caregiver. Grieving a lost family member includes beloved family pets. And experiencing a loss doesn’t necessarily mean someone has died. Family changes such as a divorce or a big move to a new school can feel like a loss. As counselors, we don’t have a magic wand or a way to make it all better. However, we can offer a listening ear and an open heart.

Healthy Minute
Preventing the Spread of Illness
With illnesses on the rise, it’s important to practice healthy measures in order to prevent the spread of sickness. Please stay home if you are unwell or unable to be learning effectively in school. If your child has a fever above 100.4, they need to stay home for 24 hours or until fever-free without fever-reducing medication. If they need to be home for an extended period of time please provide our attendance office with a medical note to excuse the absence(s). Also, please have the student or adult at home reach out to the teachers for missed work.

YMCA
Click the image for program schedules. The Douglas County YMCA asks that you only drop your student off if they are planning to participate in an activity. Please check the pool and activity schedules before dropping off your child. We want our students to show WORK, RESPECT, BELONG, at school AND within our community.
