A Message from Superintendent Keith Ahearn A Message from Superintendent Keith Ahearn

Every September, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce releases its state report cards, a snapshot of how schools are performing. This year, Fairview Park City Schools earned an overall 4.5-Star rating, following two years at 5 Stars.

A 4.5-Star rating means our schools are meeting or exceeding state standards in nearly every area, with especially strong results in academic performance, student growth, closing achievement gaps, and graduation rates. At the same time, we know where we must improve.

Our greatest opportunity lies in College and Career Readiness. While this is our lowest rating, it is also where we’ve made significant progress, expanding College Credit Plus courses on campus, encouraging students to take rigorous Advanced Placement classes, embedding industry credentials into coursework, and adding new career exploration opportunities. Students also benefit from the outstanding programs offered through our partnership with the Polaris Career Center.

It is hard for a report card to explain the complexities of teaching and learning. In my conversations with staff, what stands out is their deep passion for students. Our teachers are building strong relationships, embracing new curriculum, and supporting students’ social-emotional needs every day.

That passion is hard to measure, but it is what makes Fairview Park City Schools so special, driving our continuous improvement efforts, shaping our culture, and ensuring we continue to focus on the whole child. We measure our success by the success of our students, in the classroom, in their growth, and in their futures. Your support and involvement are crucial to our success.

Sincerely,

Keith Ahearn, Superintendent

September kicked off at Gilles-Sweet Elementary with more than new classes. Students celebrated the year’s start by climbing, swinging, and laughing on a brand-new playground.

The idea for a new playground began more than five years ago, when administrators first discussed replacing the school’s original playground. That structure was moved from Garnett Elementary, which closed when the new Gilles-Sweet Elementary opened over 20 years ago.

The new playground at Gilles-Sweet features age-appropriate equipment designed to keep students engaged while addressing more modern safety and accessibility standards.

At Lewis F. Mayer Middle School, sixth grade students don’t just learn about science, engineering, and technology - they put those disciplines into action.

In Kim Dunlap’s STEAM class, students design, build, test, and revise projects that spark creativity and prepare them for projects and coursework in multiple areas in the future.

“Students need to think for themselves, figure things out, and have patience with problem-solving,” Dunlap explained. “I usually tell them that they’ll get frustrated, but it’s OK, and that they’ll get it, and understand it. And when they do get it, it’s so cool to see when that happens.”

More than a year after upgrading the weight room at Fairview High School, students and coaches say the facility continues to transform both performance and team culture.

In April 2024, the high school unveiled $34,000 worth of new upgrades to its weight training facility. The project was made possible through an anonymous donation from an individual to the Fairview Park Athletic Club.

“The increase and usage of that room has gone up tenfold,” FHS Athletic Director Jon Adams explained. “We had to add the room to our facility master calendar, so we don’t have people tripping over each other to get in there. There is a demand now. Our coaches and kids know the benefits of strength training and injury prevention.”

At just 11 years old, Zoey Mahalic has turned her love for making bracelets into a mission to spread kindness across her community.

On September 28 at the Fairview Park Gemini Center, Mahalic is inviting the community to join Zoey’s Kindness Club and her mission to spread kindness. From 12:00 to 3:00 p.m., volunteers of all ages can stop by to help make bracelets that will be donated to patients at Fairview Hospital to brighten their day.

With thousands of bracelets created and hundreds of smiles to prove it, Mahalic shows that even small acts of kindness can make a significant impact.
