Homecoming Recap

Homecoming Week is always a fun and exciting week at BHS and this year was no exception! From spirit days, to float building, a Distinguished Alumni Ceremony and the Homecoming Assembly, a Homecoming Parade, and then finishing up with the game Friday night and a Homecoming Dance.

We appreciate all of the hard work by our students and staff, as well as the BHS and Brighton communities to be able to make it a special week for our students. We appreciate you and couldn't do it without you.

In case you missed the announcement at halftime, our Freshmen Class Float was the big winner of the fan vote, coming in first by 3 votes.

Make Up PSAT 11/NMSQT Opportunity - Wednesday, October 22nd

We have a group of students who are eligible to make up a missed PSAT 11/NMSQT opportunity from earlier this month (10/8). If your student is eligible, they should have received an email from BHS counselor Jody Petit on October 15th. This email is provided below:

"Good morning. You are receiving this email because you missed your 11th grade PSAT/NMSQT. I wanted to let you know that I am offering a makeup opportunity one week from today. Tutoring Options at BHS

National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.

In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.

The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.

If you would like to contribute, please review the available slots on the Sign-Up Genius and click on the button to sign up. Please indicate in your sign up what type of soup and/or salad you will be bringing so we can avoid duplicates. A few vegetarian and gluten free options would be wonderful!

Please drop all non-perishable items in the HS Main Office by Wednesday, Oct. 22, so we can take inventory and get all the drinks refrigerated.

White Pine Donation - Thank You

Thank you to the Brighton MI Garden Club for donating a beautiful white pine to BHS (pictured with members of our BHS Garden Club)! This was purchased from Milford Gardens who also helped us with the delivery and planting. We love the addition of this beautiful new tree in front of our school, coming from within our community.

Powerlifting Coach Update - Coach Still Needed

We have been getting a few questions around the BHS Powerlifting Team. Please see the information below:

We are still in need of a club advisor/coach for the BHS Powerlifting Team! A more formal description of responsibilities can be provided upon request, but the identified items below cover the largest items on the list:

  • Competitions on Saturdays, including State Meets
  • Setting practice schedules with Coach Mayo (typically 3 days/week from early Nov. - early March)
  • Writing and distributing lifting programs to athletes
  • Navigating the administrative side of getting into meets and communicating with the Michigan High School Powerlifting Association

With it being a club, the practice schedule can be whatever anyone needs it to be, as long as it fits with Coach Mayo’s training schedule. Any meets will be on Saturdays across the state. There is a process to apply into the meets, but the MHSPLA gives out that information to new coaches at the beginning of every year. Additional guidance from the team's previous coach at least to get started can potentially be coordinated.

If interested, or if you have any questions, please contact Matt Evans (evansm@brightonk12.com) and we will do the best we can to get them answered for you.

Career Chats (Previously Lunch N Learns)

With moving Advisory out of lunches, we changed the name, but the idea for Lunch N Learns is back, just with a new name! We will be hosting Career Chats this year during Advisory and could use your help. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested in connecting our students with more information on potential career opportunities, we would love it if you could review the information below or share the following information with anyone who may be interested!

Brighton High School is looking for community partners!

We are seeking volunteer presenters to share their careers and experiences with students during our 2025-26 Career Pathways Presentations. Our "Career Chats", previously known as Lunch N Learns, are a great opportunity to inspire the next generation and help students explore future career options.

When: During Advisory on Wednesdays from 9:18-10:16 am (dates vary)
Where: Brighton High School
Who: Individuals from all career fields welcome!

If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Tanya Clark at clarkt@brightonk12.com for more details.

Together, we can help students connect their education to real-world opportunities!

October is Michigan College Month!

Michigan College Month is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college and for financial aid. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college. Michigan College Month emphasizes the relationship between applying to and paying for college and helps break down some of the most complex and commonly cited barriers to attending college.

We will have different events going on in October in promotion of Michigan College Month, but also have some resources to share as well. In addition to the student resources already linked, additional resources on fee-free applications/application fee waivers are provided below:

  • Michigan Colleges with No Application Fees
  • Michigan Colleges with Waived Application Fees in October

Job Shadow Day Opportunity

BHS, in partnership with Livingston ESA’s Career Development Department, has planned a countywide, bi-annual event, Liv Co Job Shadow Day, from Wednesday, November 5 through Friday, November 7, 2025. This is a one day activity designed to show Juniors and Seniors a bit about what a day in the life of different careers is like. There are many diverse opportunities for students to shadow, ranging from aircraft mechanics to veterinarians to HVAC technicians.

Sign up for students opens on October 15th at 7pm; students can register and sign up on the same day! Registration involves a parent signature to confirm students' permission to participate. Students can preview the website ahead of time to see what Job Shadow Opportunities are available at the Livingston Career Hub. Please note that career availability is on a first come, first served basis, so it would be a good idea to have a list of top five choices. Some careers require extra paperwork, so please check that out ahead of time. Extra forms are attached to the Job Shadow Profile. All extra forms are due to the employer via email by October 29th, or the job shadow will be canceled. The last day to sign up for Job Shadows for students is October 29th, 2025.

Please see your counselors or CTE teachers for more information. It’s a great way to check out different careers to see if it’s the one for you! There are currently 38 employers and over 340 opportunities available!
