Keeping it R.E.A.L. (Respectful, Engaged, Accepting, Leaders)

To Think About….

The Candy That Made a Difference

It was Halloween night, and three friends, Corbin, Cooper, and Lanya were racing from house to house, trying to fill their bags with as much candy as possible. Every time someone dropped a handful of chocolate bars or gummy worms into their bags, they celebrated like they had just won a championship.

At one house, an older man smiled and handed each of them a big bag of candy. But before they left, he said, “I have a challenge for you. I want you to give away one piece of candy for every challenge you’ve overcome this year.”

The boys looked at each other. “That’s easy!” Cooper said. “I’ll give one for passing my math test.”

Corbin thought for a moment. “I’ll give one for making the team, even though I almost quit because I thought I wasn’t good enough.”

Lanya reached into her bag and pulled out a piece of candy. “I’ll give one for asking for help when I was struggling instead of pretending everything was fine.”

As they walked to the next house, the trio began talking about other challenges they had faced. Some were big, some were small, and some were struggles no one else even knew about. They realized that every piece of candy represented something more valuable than a sweet treat: the courage to keep going when things get difficult.

The next morning at school, they saw how that same lesson applied to life at Rancho Verde. Grades were due Friday. Some students were worried about missing assignments or difficult tests. Fall sports teams were preparing for playoff games. Theater students were rehearsing lines, band members were practicing their music, choir students were working to make their next performance unforgettable and Dance & Folklorico practiced for hours to perfect their routines.

Everyone had something they were working toward and everyone had challenges to overcome.

Corbin turned to his friends and said, “Maybe success isn’t about never struggling. Maybe it’s about what we do when we struggle.”

Cooper nodded. “Like finishing that last assignment, showing up for practice, helping a teammate, or stepping onstage even when you’re nervous.”

Lanya smiled. “And not giving up on ourselves or each other.”

That Halloween, three friends went looking for candy and discovered something sweeter: every challenge is an opportunity to grow, every setback can teach us something, and every small step forward brings us closer to our goals.

The Mustang Message

Mustangs, as grades come due this Friday and our fall teams head into playoffs, remember that success is built one decision at a time. Whether you’re completing an assignment, competing for a championship, performing onstage or simply working through a difficult day, keep pushing forward.

Encourage your classmates to finish this grading period strong. Ask for help when you need it, offer help when you can, and remember that you don’t have to be perfect to make progress.

The Mustang Mentality of Excellence means persevering through challenges, supporting one another, and believing that our best days are still ahead.

This Halloween, enjoy the candy, but remember, the sweetest victories are the ones we earn by refusing to give up.

"I’d rather regret the risks that didn’t work out than the chances I didn’t take at all.. success takes sacrifice and thousands of hours..." - Simone Biles
