Our Learning Community...
As we enjoy the beautiful San Diego weather with sunny days, fresh air, and mild winter temperatures, we are hopeful this newsletter finds your family healthy and well. With many winter illnesses, including the flu, circulating in our community, we appreciate everyone’s efforts to help keep our school healthy. Simple habits can make a big difference: encourage frequent handwashing, get plenty of rest, eat nourishing foods, stay hydrated, and keep children home when they have a fever. Taking advantage of outdoor time, when possible, can also support both physical health and overall well-being. If you are not sure if your child should stay home or return to school after an illness, please reach out to our health office, they are here to help!
Within the next two weeks, you will be receiving your child’s Winter Assessment Score Reports from San Diego Unified School District.
These reports will include:
Grades 1–5: i-Ready Math results
Grades 3–5: i-Ready Reading results
Grades K–2: mCLASS DIBELS Reading results
We want to remind families that each of these assessments represents one data point in a collection of information teachers use to understand what your child knows, what they are learning, and how they are growing in their mastery of grade-level standards. Classroom observations, daily work, and ongoing assessments are also important parts of this picture.
The reports you receive will include suggestions and resources to support learning at home. Even small amounts of time spent reinforcing skills, reading together, practicing math facts, or talking through problem-solving can make a big impact on your child’s confidence and progress.
As you review the results with your child, we encourage you to keep a positive, growth-focused mindset. Celebrate effort, encourage perseverance, and remember the power of the word “yet.” If a skill is not mastered yet, it simply means your child is still learning and learning takes time!
If you have questions after reviewing your child’s report, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued partnership and support at home.
2026-27 School Program Priorities Survey for Families
As we begin planning for next school year's budget, we are seeking your input on the needs of our site to guide future budgeting discussions and decisions. Information from this needs assessment will be used to shape budgets and strategies for the 2026-27 school year. All survey responses will be reviewed by the School Site Council, Site Governance Team, and Instructional Leadership Lighthouse Team. The School Site Council will then prioritize needs to finalize the allocation of Title I funds.
Thank you for the time to complete this survey. Your input is greatly appreciated as we consider our budgeting needs for the 2026-27 school year.

Student Cell Phone/Smartwatch Reminder...
This is a friendly reminder of the San Diego Unified School District cell phone free school policy. Students are not permitted to use cell phones during the school day. This includes smartwatches that can make calls or send texts, if the device functions like a cell phone, it is not permitted to be used. Most smartwatches have a school mode setting; please enable this setting so your child is set up for success.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!
Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.
Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.
Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:
-
Choose a cozy time and space to read together
-
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
-
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
-
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby
The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
