KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
Welcome back from spring break. We hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing week, and that our students are rested and ready to finish the school year strong. If your family is returning from the break a bit late, please just call or email the office to let us know so we can update your student's attendance.
As we get back into the swing of things, please keep in mind that this is the final week of the third quarter grading period. PLEASE NOTE, CREDIT RECOVERY FOR Q1 AND Q2 ALSO ENDS FRIDAY...if a student needs an extension to finish up, THEY MUST reach out to admin and set up a meeting to explain why they haven't finished their IXL requirements. Report cards will be sent home with students during the following week.
We have a busy couple of weeks ahead. We are excited to host motivational speaker Chaz Perez for an afternoon assembly this Thursday afternoon, and the school will run on a modified bell schedule for the day. Thursday evening in the Choral Pod, parents and students are invited to an additional presentation focused on building stronger connections that instill resilience.
For our eighth graders, counselors from Kodiak High School will be visiting over the next two Fridays to help them prepare and register for their ninth grade courses. This is an important step in their transition to high school, and we are excited to help them begin that process.
Next Friday, April 3, is our annual Spring Fling dance for sixth and seventh graders. We want this to be a fun event for everyone, so please take a moment to talk with your student about the attendance and behavior requirements. To remain eligible to attend, they must be present for at least half of the school day on Friday and must remain free of any Tier 2 or Tier 3 behavior referrals starting tomorrow, March 23, for the two weeks leading up to the dance.
Looking a bit further ahead, AK STAR testing will begin on Wednesday, April 8.
The final weeks of the school year always fly by, and we have many great events on the horizon. We are looking forward to a successful and exciting spring with your students.
As always, please contact us with any questions or concerns.

Hello 8th Grade Families,
As we progress into the second semester of our school year, we are already preparing for the excitng transiton to high school for our 8th grade students. To ensure that our students have a smooth transiton, the high school counselors will be in 8th grade classes to speak with our students.
During the next few weeks, we will work to discuss important topics such as:
• High school credits
• Class placements (with recommendations from their 8th grade Math & ELA teachers)
• Courses offered at KHS
• Graduation requirements
• Grade Point Averages
• Understanding post-secondary planning
High school counselors are planning to visit KMS on Friday March 27th and Friday April 3rd to help our 8th grade students register for high school classes. Below this letter is a list of course optons for 9th grade students. We encourage you to speak with your student about these upcoming visits and help them select their classes for freshman year.
For additional information, you can visit the Kodiak High School webpage https://www.kibsd.org/khs/ > navigate to the Counseling and Student Services tab > view course selection sheets and Course Description Booklet.
If you have any questons or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the high school counselors.
