Introducing NY Inspires Introducing NY Inspires

A New Vision for Education in New York State

Genesee Valley BOCES is excited to share details about NY Inspires, a transformative initiative from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) aimed at redefining high school graduation requirements and diploma options.

The goal of NY Inspires is to move toward real-world readiness, career proficiency, and flexible learning pathways like Career and Technical Education (CTE), internships, and capstone projects.

The Four Key Transformations:

  • 1. Adoption of the NYS Portrait of a Graduate: Establishing a clear statewide framework that defines the essential skills, knowledge, and attributes every student should demonstrate upon graduation.

  • 2. Redefining Credits and Learning Experiences: Shifting credit guidelines to focus on proficiency and competency, allowing students to earn credit through real-world applications, CTE programs, work-based learning, and performance-based assessments.

  • 3. Expanded Assessment Options: Modernizing assessments to include flexible, performance-based options alongside traditional exams so students can demonstrate their learning in multiple ways.

  • 4. Moving to One Diploma: Streamlining the current diploma structure into a single, unified New York State High School Diploma framework.

Key Phased Implementation Timeline:

  • Installation Phase (2025 – 2027): NYSED releases new learning standard frameworks and rubrics, with school districts and BOCES preparing staff and curriculum alignment.

  • Initial Implementation (2027 – 2029): Updated credit guidelines and new assessment options roll out across districts.

  • Full Implementation (Fall 2029): Incoming 9th-grade students (the Class of 2033) will be the first cohort fully operating under the new diploma requirements and statewide competency reporting.

As this multi-year transition begins, GVBOCES remains committed to preparing our students with the hands-on skills, technical training, and academic foundations needed to succeed in college, careers, and civic life. Stay tuned to our upcoming 'Campus Connections' as we continue to share resources and guidance on what NY Inspires means for our students and community!

The LIVES program have been busy in the community! They had a recent field trip to the Equicenter. Students harvested veggies, planted seeds, and groomed two horses. They also volunteered at the Geneseo Food Pantry, which is a regular visit. While there, the students decorated the kids bags that are handed out to families that come in with children.

At their September 1 Open House, Early College High School students explored the new science room, decked out with big table tops for projects, collaboration and science labs. Not only were students showing off the ECHS hallway to their family and friends, setting up their lockers, and getting their 26-27 schedules, but they were also scoping out some organisms under the microscopes in Ms. Lindberg’s classroom.

Students will have the ability to learn about all aspects in the field of education, earn up to 18 college credits, participate in job shadows with school professionals and have the ability to graduate with their Teacher Assistant certification. The Outdoor Power Sports program will be preparing students for a career as a power sports technician.

The Animal Science Class at the Batavia Campus (and of course, the Goats) are very excited about the new Rotational grazing system. The large open space provides so many long term benefits for the animals. They are now able to have fresh air flow, get exercise while grazing throughout the day. Partnering with our Electro Mechanical Class- the fence can be moved as often as need for the animals to continue to enjoy these benefits. While the animals have been enjoying this new outdoor space the empty barns allowed our Operations and Maintenance crew the ability to deep clean the stables to prepare for the cold months ahead.

Giving Thinking Some Breathing Room

When we introduce a complex concept or give a set of real-time instructions, our brains naturally want to fill the silence immediately. This week, try a universal baseline check: the 5-second pause.

After asking a question or delivering a task directive, intentionally pause for five seconds before stepping in to prompt, rephrase, or answer it yourself. This simple buffer significantly lowers performance anxiety, gives all learners a chance to process the sequence, and builds student independence across every single instructional setting
