Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

We are excited to share a strategy from our Ci3T plans that we are implementing at NISL: Behavior Specific Praise. This research-based approach has shown great success in reinforcing positive behaviors at school, and we would like to invite you to join us in using this powerful tool at home.

What is Behavior Specific Praise?
Behavior Specific Praise is a way of giving praise that names the exact behavior being recognized. Rather than offering general praise like “Good job,” we encourage families to be specific, such as “Thank you for putting your shoes away as soon as you came inside.” This helps children know exactly what behavior is expected and appreciated and makes it more likely they will repeat it.

How can families use Behavior Specific Praise at home?
Here are some simple steps to begin using Behavior Specific Praise at home:

  1. Reflect on how often you give general praise versus specific praise.
  2. Identify behaviors you want your child to do more often.
  3. Practice giving behavior-specific praise in your daily interactions.
  4. Watch for those positive behaviors and give praise when you see them.
  5. Keep track of how often you're using Behavior Specific Praise, and observe how it impacts your child's behavior.
  6. Ask your child how they feel about receiving specific praise from you.

This strategy not only strengthens positive behavior but also creates a more supportive and clear environment for your child. Please see the attached infographic, letter, and video link for more details and practical examples of how to implement this strategy at home. We look forward to partnering with you to foster positive behaviors and a strong home-school connection.
