Social Emotional Supports Social Emotional Supports

VUSD schools continue to support the social-emotional competencies and skills of our students. We are excited to share that all schools are engaged in a professional learning series this year to enhance their Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Schools are identifying and implementing school-wide behavioral expectations, strategies, and effective practices which help meet the needs of the whole child; academic, behavior, and social-emotional competencies. PBIS is an evidence-based framework that fits within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) where students are welcomed, valued, and receive the necessary resources and supports, when and where they are needed, to succeed.

Our school counselors are an integral part of each school’s system of support. School counselors contribute to the teaming structures in a variety of ways; including leadership teams, school site council, PBIS teams, and/or student study teams. Through their participation, they provide input and expertise that is both proactive and responsive to support academic, college/career, and social-emotional needs of our students.

This is also a part of a month long WinterFest celebration in Vista. More details will be forthcoming.

Career Pathways are off to a great start in the 2023-24 school year. Our pathway courses are full and we have added additional sections to accommodate students on wait lists. At Rancho Buena Vista the Construction and Welding programs are preparing to move into their beautiful new home. We anticipate training on the new equipment to be complete in December and to start our first classes in January of 2024. A very special guest, Dr. Michael Fullan, dropped by our welding program and was quite impressed with our augmented reality welding simulators and the quality of instruction our students are receiving. At Mission Vista we have transitioned our Patient Care pathway into an Emergency First Responder pathway to better reflect student interest and a complement to the Biomedical Pathway. At Vista High our Auto Technology students are finally back into the shop after the lab was closed for ceiling repairs. The time out of the shop was well spent with students earning industry recognized certifications on diagnostic equipment, multimeters, and torque equipment. In the Agriculture department, completion of the installation of new sidewalks, grading, and raised beds preparation are complete and students are almost ready to start planting winter crops.

Superintendent’s Council on Equity and Anti-Racism Superintendent’s Council on Equity and Anti-Racism

The Superintendent’s Council on Equity and Anti-Racism held its first meeting of the school year on September 19th. The purpose of the council is to provide feedback and recommendations to the Superintendent and the School Board regarding district-wide initiatives that involve equity and anti-racism. Equity, as defined by our Framework for the Future means we value diversity and provide equitable access and resources across the district for all students and adults to reach their full potential

This year, all 29 schools will participate in Equity Walks. Site Equity Walk Teams, composed of a district leader, site administrator, teacher, parent and a student representative, will examine school environments and access to academic instruction through the lens of equity. Equity Walk teams will convene to review findings and examine ways current systems can be transformed to provide equitable access to all. These findings will be reported back to the Superintendent’s Council on Equity and Anti-Racism so they may make recommendations to the Superintendent and School Board.

Parents as Partners Parents as Partners

Students do their best when they are surrounded by caring adults who are invested in their strengths, interests, and values. The partnership between parents and schools help create that thriving, supportive system where students can reach their full potential. Parent involvement helps extend teaching outside the classroom, creating a more positive experience for students, helping them perform better when they are in school. The term “parental involvement” means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities.

Parents can be more involved in their child's school by:

  • Communicating with teachers.

  • Volunteering in the classroom or for school activities.

  • Attending parent-teacher conferences.

  • Helping with the governance of a school council or advisory committee

Contact your school principal and explore ways you can become involved.

As part of the winter surge of COVID-19 in communities, free at-home COVID tests kits are once again available through the government. Starting September 25th, each household can obtain four tests by visiting COVIDTests.gov.

As a reminder, students exhibiting COVID-like symptoms should remain home from school. Students can return to school when their symptoms are mild and improving, when they have been without a fever for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication, and they have not tested positive for COVID-19. Let's continue to do our part to keep COVID out of our schools. Order your tests today!
