Salem Public Schools
Weekly Update
Friday, Feb. 6, 2026
Superintendent's Message:
Salem Public Schools Families,
Unfortunately, due to the incoming snowstorm, we decided to postpone Design Day to a later date to be announced.
Last week, the Salem School Committee voted unanimously to name the newly merged Carlton and Saltonstall elementary schools the Sarah Parker Remond Elementary School (listen to pronunciation here). According to School Committee policy, two more readings of the suggested name, at two separate school committee meetings are needed before it becomes official, effective July 1, 2026.
Sarah Parker Remond was born and raised in Salem. As early as age 16, she delivered powerful anti-slavery speeches. She and her family also spoke out against the Salem Public Schools when she and others were excluded due to race. As an adult, she gained international acclaim as a leading advocate for civil rights, women’s suffrage, and the abolition of slavery.
We continue to learn more about this remarkable Salem native and will be sharing additional information with our students and community in the coming months as we embrace the newly named school into our portfolio.
Finally, a quick note to save some upcoming dates for discussion and engagement around next year’s school budget. Please note that we will have sessions on the following days:
Community online budget forum: Wednesday, February 11, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (link Passcode:160315 )
In-person community forum: Wednesday, February 25, 6:30 p.m. at Salem High School
Staff only online budget forum: Thursday, February 26, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Please join us for one or more of these sessions. We need your perspective and ideas to inform our initial proposal to the School Committee in early April.
Let’s bring the Super Bowl trophy back this weekend!
Steve
POSTPONED | 2026 Design Day Postponed Due to Impending Inclement Weather
This week’s Magical Moments That Matter recognition goes to Saltonstall School multilingual educator, Ms. Sue Morgenstern, who was nominated by a fellow colleague. Sue is always looking out for “her kids” and consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her students feel welcomed, valued, and included in the classroom.
Ms. Morgenstern is incredibly supportive of our families and maintains strong, meaningful communication with them, especially during Open House and parent-teacher conferences. When families share that they are struggling, Ms. Morgenstern is always willing to help in any way she can -- whether that means visiting students’ homes, checking in at hospitals, or shopping for food and clothing for families in need.
Ms. Morgenstern also consistently lifts up the needs of multilingual learners with colleagues. She supports teachers in maintaining positive lines of communication and works closely with them to ensure that their lessons have clear access points, vocabulary supports and opportunities for writing.

Food insecurity is real and seemingly everywhere.
Salem High School Culinary Arts department students, with a boost from the Stop & Shop Supermarkets Food Pantry Program, decided to do something about it. In their own school, no less.

The theme at Friday’s 23rd Annual Jackie Robinson Celebration of Life at the Collins Middle School was clear, yet open-ended.
‘Without Jackie Robinson’s legacy, I could never have…’
A panel of guests including Boston Red Sox alumni Sam Horn (1987-89), Darnell McDonald (2010-12) and Manny Delcarmen (2005-10), Red Sox and Boston Celtics DJ Kahleil Blair, Vice President of the Jackie Robinson Foundation Ivo Philbert and NESN reporter Jahmai Webster visited Collins Middle School to discuss the personal impact Mr. Robinson’s legacy had, and continues to have, on them.
