YCIS-SV Community Connection

March 22, 2025

YCIS-SV CommunityConnectionMarch 22, 2025

Dear YCIS Community,

We’re excited to share some wonderful updates from our recent experiences! Our school leadership team participated in the YCYW Annual ECE Leaders conference online over two nights this week. A huge thank you to all of our school leaders (Carolyn, Anita, Michelle, Christina, Yu-chin) who dedicated time after their busy workdays to connect, learn, and grow with the entire organization.

Additionally, we (Kevin & Vivian) had the privilege of attending the Peninsula Heads Group and Common Ground Heads Annual Gathering, where we met with fellow school heads in the area. We shared ideas, exchanged thoughts, and collectively explored how we can bring even more "magic" to the work we do. During the event, we also had the honor of hearing from Dr. Gregory M. Walton, who introduced his new book Ordinary Magic. His message truly resonated with us—reminding us that as educators, we hold a "magic wand" in our hands. The real magic lies in how we use it to create meaningful and positive change in the lives of our students. It’s a powerful reminder of the work we do every day, and the difference we can make together.

We’re excited to keep growing as a community, learning from one another, and using our collective magic to continue inspiring and nurturing our students. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey!

Warmly,

Kevin and Vivian

TK Explores Systems and Cooperation

In TK, we’re learning about systems—groups of parts that work together to accomplish a goal. Our classroom, much like a garden or a bicycle, is a system where each part contributes to the whole. This month, we’re focusing on Cooperation, which helps make our system work smoothly. Just as plants in a garden depend on each other for water and sunlight, we depend on each other to share ideas, toys, and help our friends. Cooperation is the key to making our TK system strong, as it helps all of us grow together. To bring this idea to life, our teachers demonstrated cooperation through a fun game where they had to untangle themselves while staying connected, showing how teamwork can help solve problems and strengthen our classroom system!

Chinese Character Recognition Contest

Over the past four editions of the competition, we witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and strong support from parents. The Chinese Character Recognition contest became a signature event at our school, igniting students' passion for learning Chinese characters and deepening their appreciation of Chinese culture.

This year, the competition introduced an exciting new format. Participants used a mini-program that randomly displayed Chinese characters within a limited time. They had to quickly recognize the characters and form words, testing both their reaction speed and character recognition skills.

Under this new format, contestants competed fiercely, with those achieving the highest accuracy advancing to the championship round. In the finals, participants faced the challenge of polyphonic characters, showcasing their deep knowledge of Chinese characters.

Chinese characters were a treasure of Chinese culture, carrying thousands of years of wisdom and history. Today, we gathered not only for the competition but also to appreciate the beauty of Chinese characters and the joy of language learning.

Morning Meeting: Starting the Day with Purpose

At YCIS, we embrace a responsible classroom approach where respect, kindness, and responsibility are at the core of our daily interactions. Our aim is to create a positive, supportive, and engaging bilingual learning environment where every student can thrive.

A key part of our day is the Morning Meeting — a special time to build connections, set a positive tone for learning, and prepare for the day ahead. These meetings help students develop communication skills, boost confidence, and foster a strong sense of community, all essential in our bilingual setting.

During Morning Meeting, students receive important information about the day, including specialist class schedules and upcoming school events, ensuring they’re ready for music, visual arts, or other special activities. Arriving on time is crucial, as this moment sets the foundation for a successful day of learning.

At YCIS, we celebrate the gift of being bilingual. We encourage students to approach both English and Chinese with curiosity and enthusiasm, embracing the unique opportunity to grow in two languages. Let’s make every morning a meaningful start to a wonderful day!

4th-Grade Students Journey Through California's History: A Hands-On Educational Adventure in Sacramento

Our 4th-grade students embarked on a three-day educational adventure to Sacramento, traveling by Amtrak to explore California’s rich history. What made this trip even more special was that students took the lead in planning the excursion—researching hotels, booking tours, and arranging transportation.

The trip covered key historical topics, including the California government, the Gold Rush, the railroad’s impact on the state’s development, and Native American culture through a visit to the California State Indian Museum.

Students had the opportunity to visit the California State Capitol, where they learned about the state’s government and legislative process. That evening, they stayed at the historic Sacramento Hostel, where they experienced California’s past through its preserved architecture and ambiance.

The next day, students traveled on a horse-drawn wagon into Sutter’s Fort, stepping back in time as they participated in the Environmental Living Program (ELP). This hands-on experience allowed them to take on the roles of 1840s settlers, learning about their hardships, skills, and daily routines. Activities included candle-making, weaving, and food preparation. They also learned about John Sutter’s role in California’s early development and the interactions between pioneers and Native American communities. That night, they stayed inside the fort in sleeping bags and took part in a night watch program, experiencing what it was like for settlers who had to protect their community.

On the final day of the trip, students toured the California State Railroad Museum, where they learned about the development of the railroad, its significant impact on California’s growth, and the contributions of Chinese immigrants who played a crucial role in building the Transcontinental Railroad. This visit deepened their understanding of the Chinese immigrant experience and their lasting contributions to California’s communities.

By planning and experiencing this trip firsthand, students not only expanded their knowledge of California’s history but also gained valuable skills in research, organization, and teamwork. The combination of classroom learning and real-world exploration made for an unforgettable journey.

5th Graders Dive into Earth Science: Exploring Layers and Core Sampling

Our 5th graders recently began studying Earth science, with a focus on the Earth's layers and their components. We took this learning further by examining the layers of soil and rock and exploring core drilling, a method used by geologists to analyze subsurface properties. To make this concept hands-on, students created a simulated landmass using layers of colored play-doh, sand, and floof, then practiced core sampling with clear straws. They analyzed their data and made predictions about their landmass' composition, mirroring real-world scientific processes.

Off to China!

Our students were all smiles and excitement at SFO Airport as they prepared to embark on their unforgettable journey to China! This trip is a unique opportunity for them to dive deeper into Chinese language and culture, explore historical landmarks, and create lasting memories with their classmates. Safe travels, everyone — we can’t wait to hear all about your adventures!

YALP (Yew Chung Art & Language Program) YALP (Yew Chung Art & Language Program)

At YALP, we continuously tailor learning to inspire students' curiosity and real life explorations. With the recent rainy and stormy weather, our lower-grade students researched how rain forms and weather patterns. They stimulated the entire formation cycle with shaving cream for clouds and colored water as rain and made 3D models to illustrate. Additionally, they conducted an exciting experiment of poking many pencils through a water-filled zip bag without any leaks which sparked their curiosity to uncover the science behind it.

Meanwhile, our upper grade students expanded their creativity through science-based projects. They crafted models of rare fruits and learned their Chinese names and key facts, designed intricate marble run machines and kept optimizing it to automate marbles collection.

At YALP, every activity is an enjoyable adventure of learning.
