Woolwich Central School Students Throw Birthday Party for Local Legend, Charlie Presby

For over a century, towns in New England have presented their oldest residents with ceremonial canes — for those willing to accept. At age 98, Charles "Charlie" Presby is the holder of Woolwich's Boston Cane.

Presby, who lives across the street from Woolwich Central School, has lived in the same home since before the original school was built in 1950. Over the decades, he has watched generations of students come and go, forming strong connections with the school community. His ties to the school deepened even further in 2011 when the building underwent a major reconstruction. During the project, he served as the honorary site supervisor, keeping a watchful eye on the progress and offering his wisdom to the construction crews.

To mark the occasion, the school threw a birthday party complete with two of Presby’s favorite treats—Rice Krispies and Klondike Bars. Students gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” and share fond memories of their cherished neighbor.

When asked if he had any advice for younger generations, Presby shared simple but powerful words of wisdom: “Take things one day at a time and keep working hard every day.” A man who leads by example, Presby continues to stay active well into his late 90s. Even today, Woolwich Central School entrusts him with broken chairs, which he welds and repaints for a fair price.

The celebration wasn’t just about marking another year—it was a testament to the deep bond between generations in Woolwich. For the students and staff of Woolwich Central School, honoring Charlie Presby was a way to give back to a man who has given so much to their community.

As he enters his 98th year, one thing is clear: Charlie Presby’s legacy will endure far beyond his remarkable 97 years.

Happy birthday, Charlie!

Secretary, Dike-Newell School🐝

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

The staff and school environment.

What are your hobbies?

Not sure it's a hobby when you have to DIY and reno your house yourself, but I do love a good house project along with painting, swimming, beach combing, and most of all having fun with my family.

What are the top experiences on your bucket list?
Pulling the trigger on moving to Maine. We uprooted our lives to live in the beautiful state of Maine to give our kids a better place to grow up and to be in nature.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received, or who has inspired you to try your best? Why?

I've heard many say this, but it definitely resonates deep for me, and that is " You receive what you put out". Never lead with emotion, just strength and the will to be better than the day before.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be? Why?

Dolly Parton
