Special Edition - 5th Grade Special Events
Class of 2033
Park Brook refers to the class as the year they will graduate from high school.
A note from the principal
Dear Park Brook Families,
The end of 5th grade is a stepping stone in students' educational journey, which is why we do not call this a graduation. The expectation for all students at Park Brook is that they graduate from high school.
This is also a time to reminisce about the good times in elementary school. I just recently looked at the yearbook from when these 5th graders were in kindergarten. I have wonderful memories of weekend field trips, events at school, and the typical school days we have enjoyed throughout these years. I feel most fortunate to work at Park Brook with these students, and all of the students.
I feel the need to deviate for just a moment. Many years ago before I was a principal, I was a high school teacher. Typically, about 90% of parents/guardians attend conferences in elementary schools. At the high school level, about 10% of parents/guardians attend conferences. I want my Park Brook Students to have parents/guardians at their conferences until they graduate from high school.
There is so much drama that occurs on social media and group chats. At the elementary level I strongly urge parents to keep cell phones out of kids bedrooms at night, I think it is even more so important as they enter the middle school years.
Kids need parents/guardians to supervise them to give them the strength to stand up to peer pressure which will unfortunately grow as they enter middle school. Please get to know their friends, and perhaps even more so, get to know the parents of their friends. Peer pressure has changed, and not for the better, because of social media.
Now back to this year.
We have a tradition of taking 5th grade students to Wirth Park for two days. More information is below, as well as the waiver that must be read prior to signing the permission slip. The waiver does not need to be printed, simply read and then when you sign the permission slip you will indicate that you either agree or disagree with the waiver.
Commemoration is a special time with adult family members, and then on the last day of school both 5th grade classes will plant a tree as a symbol of their class. The grounds of Park Brook have trees with signs indicating the year the trees were planted. (In 2020, the year these students were in kindergarten, the 5th graders that year planted burning bushes rather than trees, the year that was cut short.)
While I will share more at commemoration and look forward to visiting with families, I want you to know that it has been my honor to be their principal throughout their time at Park Brook.
Sincerely,
Mr. Scott W. Taylor

Please do not have middle school and senior high school students leave school early to attend the commemoration.
Parents/guardians are welcome to park in the bus circle after 12:50 p.m. and must be out by 3:00 p.m. to allow busses and contracted vehicles to enter the bus circle. (You will be able to sign out siblings of 5th graders; they will meet you towards the front of the school.)
Wirth Park & The Loppet Foundation
Students will spend two days at Wirth Park learning new activities such as mountain biking, canoeing, and so on. Each year the activities are slightly different, but always a great time. Lunch will be provided for all with either hot dogs or hamburgers cooked on a grill.
While the dates are set, the exact times may be adjusted and therefore not printed as we are working out a few details. Students need to be on time to school.
The purpose of this trip is to enhance the Focus on Fitness Initiative by introducing students to new activities that they may enjoy in the future, while we celebrate their elementary years.
- Mountain Biking & Biking: Helmets will be required at all times, and helmets must be fastened correctly.
- Students are expected to follow the above safety expectations and the expectations of staff who will check to make sure the helmets and life jackets are properly fitted.
If a student does not demonstrate positive behaviors on Tuesday of the trip, the student will not participate on the Wednesday.
