Principal's Update
Dear Kenwood Families,
Next week is Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week! One of the sweetest gifts an educator can receive is a note or picture that captures what the student loves most about learning with their teacher. Thank you in advance for showering our talented staff with gratitude next week, including with what looks to be an incredible Staff Appreciation Lunch!
May is filled with excellent opportunities to enjoy the broader school community: the Plant Sale (today through the weekend!), Bike and Walk to School day, the Spring Picnic, a fundraising dinner at the Lowry, the 4th and 5th Grade Music Concert, and Field Day, to name a few. Please join us!
Additionally, students will complete spring assessments in math and reading and take end of year climate and culture surveys to help our school, the District, and the state understand how our students are feeling when they're in school. The 5th graders will be completing the Minnesota Student Survey the week of May 19. The Minnesota Student Survey is conducted across schools in Minnesota every three years. Federal law requires us to notify caregivers of this activity.
Questions on the survey are about many topics related to young people’s lives. The survey is anonymous and no personally identifiable information is collected as part of the survey.
Please see the attached Passive Consent Notice to Parents (English, Spanish, Somali, Hmong) for additional information about the survey. You may also visit our district REA website. If you do not wish to have your student complete the Minnesota Student Survey, please complete the form and return it to school.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
I wish you all a wonderful month of May!
Sincerely,
Principal Johnson
ALC After School Classes Updates
The last day of ALC after school classes will be Thursday, May 8. All students will resume regular end of day transportation on Tuesdays and Thursdays the week of May 12.
Every student who participated in an ALC class will receive a CLP (Continual Learning Plan)- regardless of how many classes attended. Please sign and return the CLP as soon as possible. This form is required by the district and helps us get funding for ALC programming.
Thank you for supporting Kenwood’s extended learning opportunities this year!
Reading Intervention- Progress Notification Letter
If your student receives reading intervention support, look for a progress notification letter on Monday 5/5. This letter will help inform you about your student’s progress on skill and grade level measures before spring benchmark testing (FAST). “Skill measures” help teachers understand how your student is doing with learning the skills specifically taught and practiced in their intervention. “Grade level measures” inform teachers about your student’s progress toward reading grade level text. The information in the letter will share recent progress monitoring data for one or both measures. Please talk to your student’s teacher if you have questions or want to share additional information about your child’s reading progress.

Tinker + Nudge
Tinker + Nudge is a process-based art studio for kids located in South Minneapolis. What do we mean by "process-based" art studio? It just means we focus on the creative process - not the final product. Every project that goes home is as individual as your kiddo(s)! We offer art classes, workshops, playdates, birthday parties and camps where kids are encouraged to explore a wide range of materials and techniques including sculpture, printmaking, collage, drawing, and painting. We love to say, "I don't know, let's try it!"
