September went by in a flash and it's hard to believe that October is already upon us! For me, this month means falling leaves, chillier mornings.....and preparing for the annual Patton Halloween parade and classroom parties!

In this Post you will find an update on all the fun things we have planned for Halloween including our parade route and when you can expect to receive more detailed information. This is always such a fun day!

We are also looking ahead to Veteran's Day and would love to honor those in our Patton community who have served at our annual Veteran's Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 11th. We are very lucky to have an active service member and Patton parent, Mr. Navarro, who will be speaking to our students and staff this year.

Next Wednesday, October 7th is National Walk To School day! Our amazing traffic team have some special guests coming to greet kids and parents on their way to school. This day helps celebrate the benefits and simple joys of walking, rolling, or biking to school. It's also a good lesson on how to walk to school safely, so please help us celebrate by having your child wear bright, high-visibility (neon) colors!

On Thursday, October 8th the Arlington Heights Fire Department will be at Patton for our fire drill. Please do not be alarmed if you see emergency vehicles outside the school on this day!

Next Friday is our first Student Council sponsored Spirit Day supporting "Heavenly Hats". Wear your favorite hat and donate to a good cause on Friday, October 9th.

Thanks,

Ellie Chin

APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR AT RECESS (NEW POST!) APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR AT RECESS (NEW POST!)

Perfect fall weather means perfect conditions for outdoor recess! Please send students to school wearing closed toe sneakers or athletic shoes so they can enjoy playing with their friends at recess! Even if students don't have gym, please have them wear shoes that will allow them to participate in their preferred activities during their recess time. Crocs and soccer do not go together very well. Please continue to practice tying shoes with your child as we have many kids whose shoes are flying off while they are running or playing. We had a few instances this week where students were unable to take part in some activities because they were not wearing appropriate shoes! Thank you for partnering with us on this front!

Patton Elementary is a special place where students from all cultures, whether that be family traditions or ethnic celebrations, come together to show the Panther Way. This is what this year’s PTA Reflections program is all about. Please encourage your child to submit entries for this year’s program with the theme: What My Culture Means To Me.

Students can submit their completed works of art in one (or more) of the art categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Please read through these specific entry guidelines for each category. Here’s some more information about the program created by the district program chair.

NEW! This year, parents can submit their student entries online, through this PTA Reflections Entry Google form. Please note that physical entries are required for Visual Arts and Photography Categories, which can be turned into Patton’s main office by the end of school day on Tuesday, November 17th.

Feel free to reach out to Tina Shah (tinashah1@gmail.com) with any questions!

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS - Friday, October 30th (NEW POST!) HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS - Friday, October 30th (NEW POST!)

October has snuck up on us so Halloween will be here before we know it! This is always a very fun day at Patton! This year, our class parties and Halloween parade will take place on Friday, October 30th.

In a couple of weeks you will receive an email with detailed information about the day! Please do take the time to read it and familiarize yourself with the information.

Closer to Halloween, you will receive a link to a google form that will need to be filled out to let us know if your child/ren will be going home for lunch to change into their costumes or if they will be staying at school. We do ask that everyone fills out this form to ensure that we know what each student is doing on Halloween. The majority of our students do go home during the lunch hour. For students who stay at school, they will be able to change into their costumes after they have recess and lunch. Students should be able to change into their costumes independently. Staff may assist with finishing touches such as tying a bow or fastening a snap at the back of a costume.

Students that go home for lunch should return by 1:10pm to ensure they are in their classrooms by the time the bell rings.

At around 1:45 pm we will begin our annual Halloween parade around the neighborhood (see image to see our parade route). Parents are welcome to come and stand along the parade route to watch the students go by! Please know that the parade will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather.

Classroom parties will take place following the parade and school will finish at the regular time of 3:35pm.

We always look forward to the fun and creative costumes our students come up with each Halloween. We ask for your partnership in choosing appropriate costumes for school that do not have weapons, blood, gore, or violent themes. In the interest of safety, please be sure your child is able to walk and sit comfortably in their costume; is able to see where they are walking; and is able to remove their costume independently to use the bathroom.

We would love to honor and recognize all Veterans connected to the Patton community, even if they can't be with us in person, by including their photo and information in a display that will be in the Patton commons throughout the month of November. Please download and complete this page and include a photo or have your child draw a picture if you would like to have a special Veteran recognized at Patton. Copies of this will be available in the office if you do not have access to a printer. Please return these to the school office by November 2nd.

We will post these at Patton throughout the month of November to recognize and honor these Veterans for their service and will celebrate them at our Veteran's Assembly on Wednesday, November 11th.

The students and staff at Patton would like to invite any veterans or active service members that are immediate family members of our students to join us at our Veteran’s Day assembly on Wednesday, November 11th at 11am. We are very grateful for your service and would love to honor and recognize you as we celebrate Veterans Day together.

Please complete this google form if someone is a Veteran or active service member in your immediate family who would like to attend our Veterans Day assembly. The deadline to RSVP is Sunday, November 1st.

LOST & FOUND (NEW POST!) LOST & FOUND (NEW POST!)

Jackets, hoodies and coats fall like the leaves at this time of the year! Unlike the leaves, however, these items do not create a lovely blanket of fall foliage for us to skip merrily through. These fallen clothing items adorn our Lost and Found corner, patiently awaiting collection from their owners!

Please remind your child/ren to come and take a look or feel free to pop in and have a rummage yourself if you see something you recognize!

CHILD SEX ABUSE PREVENTION LESSONS (Ongoing Post!) CHILD SEX ABUSE PREVENTION LESSONS (Ongoing Post!)

Child Sexual Abuse Prevention lessons will begin soon at Patton. Illinois Public Act 097-1147, requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for children in prekindergarten through twelfth grades. Age-appropriate instruction helps students recognize unsafe situations, keep themselves safe, and understand how to respond to unsafe situations. School social workers work with each grade level to provide age-appropriate information on topics such as safe versus unsafe touching, the touching rule, secrets, and reporting.

The following link includes more information, including presentations and opt-out forms:

http://www.sd25.org/Page/663

If you choose to opt your child out of the presentation, please share the form with Mrs. Chin at echin@sd25.org.

Mrs. Donahue will teach a lesson in each classroom beginning in October. She targets one grade level per week with the plan that all grade levels will receive their lesson before Thanksgiving break.

Please submit any opt-out forms before Monday, October 5th.

Welcome back Patton Families! We on the traffic team are looking forward to seeing everyone next week!

We are so lucky to have wonderful parent, grandparent and caregiver volunteers come to help ensure these times of the day run smoothly and safely. This year, we are in need of some extra help! Do you (or a caregiver or a grandparent...) have a bit of spare time before or after school? Do you want to be one of the first friendly faces our Patton Panthers see when they arrive at school or the last high five they get at the end of the school day? If so, we would love for you to consider volunteering to help us get our Panthers in and out of cars! We welcome people who are able to give any amount of time - morning only, afternoon only, one day a week, or even just once-in-a-while as a substitute! We would be so grateful for your help!

Being part of the traffic team is a great way to feel like part of the amazing Patton community and is also a great way to meet other parents!

If you are considering volunteering, but aren't quite ready to make a commitment, you can shadow a traffic volunteer one day and see what it's like. We have wonderful kids who smile at you, say thank you, and are excited to tell you about their day. (Great job, parents!)

If you're ready to help, complete this google form to express your interest. Thank you!

Reach out with any questions to pattontrafficteam@gmail.com and we can help.

Thanks,

Chris and Tracy
