November 12th Waste Audit Results November 12th Waste Audit Results

On November 12th, S4S exec and volunteers conducted an audit of 3-way waste systems across campus and in Dining. Contamination rates were lower than in our previous waste audit, but still show significant areas for improvement.

waste audit data: many pie charts showing contamination of recycling, compost, and landfill bins across campus

From this data, we can see that our community has been fairly strong at placing only compostable material in the green bin (although Post Hall was a weak point) and we need to remember that receipts and non-compostable cups and utensils should go in the black landfill bin. And, we are putting a lot of compostable packaging and food waste into the black landfill bin and blue recycling bin that should go in the green compostables bin. Finally, plastic and foil-lined wrappers belong in the landfill, not the recycling bin.

Please take care with placing items in the correct bins to reduce contamination and divert material from the landfill!
