Importance of Family Literacy
Rising Readers-Literacy Corner
Featured Book: Pete the Cat: Itsy Bitsy Spider by James Dean
Target Age Group: Toddlers & Preschoolers (Ages 2–5) Reading & Singing Together
Pairing familiar nursery rhymes with storybooks is a powerful way to build early literacy skills. As you read through James Dean's colorful adaptation, sing the lyrics along with Pete!
Why It Works: Singing slows down language, making it easier for young children to hear individual sounds within words (phonemic awareness). Following along with hand motions—climbing up the spout, raining down, and sun shining—builds fine motor skills and spatial concepts.
Extension Activity: Up the Spout Fine Motor Craft
Turn storytime into a hands-on learning experience with this simple craft using attached PDF
How to Play
Gather Supplies- Glue the spider parts together with glue.
Sing & Act: As you sing "The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout...", have your child mimic the spider going up the water spout and being washed out.
Language & Comprehension: Retelling the story helps children practice sequencing (first, next, last).
Fine Motor Development: Holding and mimic going up the spout grasping small cutouts strengthens finger muscles needed for writing.
