JSC Weekly Wave

A Message from the Principal
Dear JSC Community,
Happy spring (and warm, sunny wishes) to all of you! It is hard to believe that we are approaching the final marking period of the 2023-2024 school year! Tuesday, March 26th will be the final day of the third marking period. Grades will be posted on Friday, April 5th.
I would like to take a moment to address a serious issue - Morning arrival procedures at John S. Clarke Elementary Center. In the beginning of the 23-24 school year, we made the decision to open an additional entrance on our upper level (Mount Hope Ave.). By entering school on the upper level, students in K, 1, and 2 have a much shorter walk to their classrooms. Unfortunately, traffic safety concerns developed and continued to increase as the school year progressed. We did our best to address the concerns over the last several months, but ultimately decided that the safest action is to close the Mount Hope entrance. Starting on Thursday, April 4th (the day we return from spring break), all students who are dropped off by private vehicle will enter school through the Main Entrance (located on the school's lower level on 16th Street).
Our morning arrival time starts at 8:35AM and ends at 9:00AM. We offer this extended 25 minute drop-off window to help alleviate traffic congestion. The 'peak' of traffic occurs from 8:30AM to 8:45AM. To avoid the rush, consider dropping off between 8:45AM and 8:59AM. (Students are not considered tardy until 9:01AM.)
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any concerns. You can call, email, or speak to me in person. Most mornings and afternoons you can find me patrolling 16th Street and Mount Hope Avenue, as students arrive and dismiss. I do my best to be accessible, approachable, and down-to-earth, so don't be afraid to stop and chat. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we work to improve safety during our morning arrival process.
In other news, spring break is on the horizon! JSC students will be dismissed at noon on March 27th, and school will resume on Thursday, April 4th. We look forward to students returning for the fourth and final marking period! We have a full schedule of fun-filled learning planned! Please be sure to read the entire newsletter to discover all the reasons why JSC is the place to be!

Ms. Kerri Lubinsky

Change to Morning Drop-off at JSC Elementary, Starting 4/4/24
Due to increasing safety concerns on Mount Hope Avenue during morning arrival, the following changes will go into place, beginning on Thursday, April 4, 2024 (when we return from spring break):
- The Mount Hope doors (located on the upper level on Mount Hope Avenue) will no longer be open for morning arrival. All students being brought to school by private vehicle will enter the school through the main entrance located on the lower level. (This is the way students entered the building in previous school years.)
- Please note there will be NO changes to the PM dismissal procedure at this time. (Kindergarten and First Grade walkers and siblings will still be dismissed from the upper level for the remainder of the school year.)
When bringing a student to school by private vehicle, the adult dropping off should utilize available drop-off / pick-up parking spaces located on 16th Street, available street parking on Mount Hope Avenue, or available parking on the lower road (pool road).

PBIS
PBIS stands for 'Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports'
PBIS is a school-wide behavior system that creates a safer and more effective learning environment, and focuses on improving our school's ability to teach and support positive skills and behavior for all students. By helping students practice positive behavior, we work to build a strong community in which all students can succeed and grow.
PBIS uses:
- Effective Instructional Strategies - We believe that school wide expectations and rules should be taught the same way we teach academics.
- School wide expectations that demonstrate PRIDE (Prepare, Respect, Inspire, Demonstrate, Excel)
- Clear rules for each location, including classrooms, cafeteria, hallways, bathrooms, and buses
- Positive reinforcement strategies - We believe that students learn best when they are reinforced for demonstrating positive behavior.
- School-wide, classroom, and individual incentives, including (but not limited to):
- PRIDE Cash - Students can earn PRIDE cash by demonstrating positive behaviors. PRIDE cash can be used for prizes, fun activities, homework pass, etc.
- Red Tickets - When a student goes above and beyond expectations, they earn a red ticket. Each Friday, 10-20 tickets are selected. Winners receive prizes, rewards, activities, etc.
- Cafeteria coins - Earned for positive behaviors in the cafeteria. Can be exchanged for healthy snack
- Student of the Month - Students of the month receives prize pack and swag bag
- WOW awards - When a student exhibits a positive behavior that makes a staff member say, "Wow!", they earn a positive office referral, which includes a certificate, positive phone call from the principal, and small prize.
- Monthly incentives - Students who consistently follow PRIDE rules are eligible for monthly grade level rewards.
- So much more!
PRIDE rules are reviewed every day on JSC's Morning Splash daily news program. Be sure to click on the link below to watch the JSC Morning Splash which includes the "PBIS tip of the day (do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do)!" Ask your child to sing the PBIS jingle!
