McKinley Newsletter

This week, we have so much to celebrate at McKinley! Our community came together in powerful ways, and we are incredibly proud of the hard work, creativity, and dedication shown by our students, teachers, and families.

Esta semana, ¡tenemos mucho que celebrar en McKinley! Nuestra comunidad se unió de maneras poderosas, y estamos increíblemente orgullosos del arduo trabajo, la creatividad y la dedicación de nuestros estudiantes, maestros y familias.

We are so proud of our 4th and 5th grade students who have been part of the Community Science Leadership Academy, a project in partnership with Our Voice and Safe Routes to School (San Mateo County Office of Education). For the past two months, these young scientists gave up their lunch and recess time to meet, learn, collect data, and prepare their findings. That is true dedication!

Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado que han formado parte de la Academia de Liderazgo en Ciencias Comunitarias, un proyecto en colaboración con Our Voice y Safe Routes to School (Oficina de Educación del Condado de San Mateo). Durante los últimos dos meses, estos jóvenes científicos dedicaron su tiempo de almuerzo y recreo para reunirse, aprender, recopilar datos y preparar sus hallazgos. ¡Eso es verdadera dedicación!

On Tuesday morning, our students presented their research findings to an impressive group of community stakeholders, including representatives from Caltrain, San Mateo County, the City of Burlingame, the Burlingame Police Department, the Burlingame School District, and McKinley parents and staff. Their guiding question was: What makes it easy or hard to walk, bike, or roll around McKinley Elementary?

El martes por la mañana, nuestros estudiantes presentaron los resultados de su investigación a un impresionante grupo de partes interesadas de la comunidad, que incluyó representantes de Caltrain, el Condado de San Mateo, la Ciudad de Burlingame, el Departamento de Policía de Burlingame, el Distrito Escolar de Burlingame, y padres y personal de McKinley. Su pregunta guía fue: ¿Qué facilita o dificulta caminar, andar en bicicleta o desplazarse alrededor de McKinley Elementary?

The day began with a community audit where all stakeholders walked different areas around the school to observe conditions firsthand. Then, our students took the stage and presented their findings on three focus areas — sidewalks, roads, and litter — complete with photos, data, and their own proposed solutions. They recommended everything from repaving cracked sidewalks and adding crossing guards at dangerous intersections, to installing more trash cans and organizing community clean-up days. We could not be more impressed!

El día comenzó con una auditoría comunitaria en la que todas las partes interesadas caminaron por diferentes áreas alrededor de la escuela para observar las condiciones de primera mano. Luego, nuestros estudiantes tomaron el escenario y presentaron sus hallazgos en tres áreas de enfoque: aceras, calles y basura, con fotos, datos y sus propias soluciones propuestas. Recomendaron desde repavimentar las aceras con grietas y agregar guardias de cruce en las intersecciones más peligrosas, hasta instalar más basureros y organizar días de limpieza comunitaria. ¡No podríamos estar más impresionados!

As a result of this incredible work, we are already moving forward on some short-term improvements to the areas around our school. Please be on the lookout — there will be changes coming soon, and we will communicate them to all families as they are put in place!

A huge congratulations to our 4th and 5th grade students on their wonderful Biography Tea on Thursday! Watching our students bring historical figures to life through their research, costumes, and presentations was truly a joy. This event would not have been possible without the enormous effort of our teachers, who guided students through this deep learning experience, and our dedicated volunteers, who helped make the afternoon so special. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!
