World LanguagesWeek of January 13

This week in our classes! This week in our classes!

Spanish Language and Culture (Mr. Fontalvo, Ms. Gonzalez)

Last week, students engaged in learning vocabulary related to food and beverages through fun games and collaborative activities. It was an exciting and interactive way to enhance their language skills!

Next week, students will take their second formative assessments of the term: one focused on reading and another on speaking.

We encourage parents to motivate their children to attend after-school tutoring sessions if they need to retake any assessments they missed or scored below 69 on. As we are now halfway through the term, please note that no assignments from the first half of the period will be accepted after December 9th.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey!

Spanish I (Mr. Donaldson, Ms. Cuffee)

Unit 2: Week 6 Overview (Dec. 9-13, 2024)

This week, students will continue to deepen their understanding of clothing descriptions and related vocabulary. They will complete new SpanishDict.com homework assignments on describing clothing, which are due Friday, December 13.

The retake and makeup deadline for the first half of Term 2 is Monday, December 9. On that date, no makeups or retakes for work given on or prior to December 9 will be accepted. The week begins with a reading comprehension formative on Monday, December 9. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will work on a close reading activity focused on clothing, enhancing their reading and analytical skills.

On Thursday, students will engage in a series of interactive activities, including a reading and drawing exercise and a video-based activity exploring clothing in different contexts.

The week concludes on Friday with the first speaking formative of the term. Students will practice their oral communication skills ahead of the speaking summative, which will take place after winter break.

Spanish II (Ms. Wooten, Ms. Henderson)

New year, new unit! This semester, we’re diving into Travel and Tourism by reading a book about an American family that wins the opportunity to travel to Peru. Students will sharpen their speaking skills through weekly recorded responses to questions related to our class discussions. We’re excited to explore this new theme together!

Spanish Humanities, grade 6 (Ms. Balestra)

Happy New Year!

Students have been keeping up with the reading and are doing great with our in-class discussions. We completed a Summative on Chapters 1-4 on Friday, January 10. Students who are missing this Summative or other work need to speak with me about coming during an Advisory class period before the end of the term (January 24).

I look forward to finishing the book in the next two weeks! Thank you to those of you who have been able to purchase a book for your student and for the contributions to the class.

Spanish Humanities, grade 7 (Ms. Henderson)

We’re starting the year with a new unit: Habits and How They Help Us Reach Our Goals. As we read about The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers, we’ll focus on improving grammar and spelling. This week, students explored the difference between being proactive and reactive and wrote letters to their future selves, imagining where they’ll be in five years. Next week, we’ll begin weekly journaling to reflect on how these habits shape our lives.

Spanish Humanities, grade 8 (Ms. Wooten)

Welcome back from the break and extra snow break! This week we took a reading summative on the book Casa en Mango Street (up to the vignette Sire). Monday we will finish the writing questions on the summative and will read the next vignette "cuatro arboles flaquitos." Students will be working to track the 4 themes we have been following and discuss how the author continues to develop the theme throughout the book. At the end of the book, students will have the option to choose the format of their final project, a creative response to the book.

French Language and Culture (Ms. Bullock, Mr. Almanza)

Bonne année! As we start in this "new year," students will be wrapping up unit 2. It is summative time! In unit 2, students will be doing a reading summative and a speaking summative. This week students will be preparing their speaking skit where they create and record a café scene to show off all the things they have learned. Be on the lookout for some great work! Looking for ways to review at home? Students always have access to our current Quizlet flashcard set and can choose to play match or write to review at home.

French I (Ms. Balestra, Mr. Osei)

Bonne année!

Students have done a great job on their projects that count as a Summative grade! Thank you to family members who helped with props, or lines, or filming! The creativity of your students has been fun to see.

Students also took a Reading Comprehension Summative last week.

Term 2 ends on January 24. Please check in with your student about any outstanding work and make sure that they have a plan in place to get it turned in!

French II (Dr. Mbayu)

We begin Unit 2: Le sport, la nourriture, et la santé. We will complete a diagnostic assessment and explore culture capsules.

Chinese (Ms. Liang)

Grade 6

This past week, our students explored the fascinating world of zodiacs! They delved into the characteristics of different signs and engaged in interactive activities that combined creativity and critical thinking. Students completed a formative assessment to showcase their learning progress in Zodiac lesson 5. We learned how to sing the song Planting the Sun. We are proud of their hard work and dedication!

Grade 7

In our Grade 7 Chinese class, students began Lesson 6: Shopping and completed a formative test on Friday to assess their understanding. Students continued to build on their learning of Lesson 6 and will have a summative written and oral assessment next week.

Grade 8

In Grade 8 Chinese class, we started and completed Lesson 6 seeing doctors. We had a formative assessment last Friday and will start a summative oral and written assessment next Tuesday and Thursday. The week after next week we will start the new unit on International Trips.
