Welcome Back, Parkville Middle School Families!

We are excited to welcome everyone back for another fantastic school year at Parkville Middle School! It has been wonderful to see our students return with enthusiasm, positive energy, and a readiness to learn. We are off to a great start and look forward to all that we will accomplish together this year.

To help keep families informed and connected, we will publish this community newsletter on the first Tuesday of each month. Each edition will include important school updates and information from across our school community, including academic departments, grade-level teams, student clubs and activities, safety updates, the PTO, and our Community School Facilitator. Our goal is to provide a consistent source of information that helps families stay engaged in the exciting work happening at Parkville Middle School.

For easy navigation, families can use the navigation bar on the left side of the newsletter to jump directly to the sections that are most relevant to them. We are excited to use this newsletter as another way to strengthen communication and celebrate the many successes of our students and staff throughout the year.

Communication is essential to a successful school year, and we value the partnership between home and school. We encourage families to reach out with questions, concerns, or feedback throughout the year. We believe that educating children is a collaborative effort, and we are committed to working together to support every student's success. Thank you for your trust, partnership, and continued involvement in our school community. We look forward to a great year ahead!

Welcome to the 2026-27 School Year!

As a Community School, Parkville Middle is more than JUST a school! A community school bridges education, wellness, enrichment programs, and family services together to ensure a supportive environment where students learn, grow, and thrive both in and out of the classroom, and families have access to the resources they need.

Throughout the school year, we will host Power Produce Market food and resource distributions, access to our new Power Closet with community resources such as clothing, household, and hygiene supplies, Tutoring Opportunities for students in collaboration with Parkville High School, Events and Workshops for families to engage with the community, and much more! Our goal is to support the whole child and strengthen the network between the school and the community. Together, we can create a stronger, healthier learning environment where every student succeeds and achieves. We truly appreciate your partnership in this effort!

If you are interested in getting involved by attending our quarterly Shared Decision-Making Team meetings, volunteering with the Power Produce Markets or Power Closet, etc., you can complete the following Form: Stakeholder Interest Form – Fill out form

Mathematics

Our students are off to a great start and are actively engaged in meaningful mathematics learning as they develop problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills!

In Math 6, students are building on their understanding of area as they explore more complex shapes and learn to calculate the surface area of three-dimensional figures, including prisms and pyramids. Math 7 students are investigating scale drawings and scaled copies, applying scale factors to understand how lengths and areas change in real-world situations. In Math 8, students are exploring angle relationships and the conditions that determine whether a triangle is unique, possible in multiple ways, or not possible. Algebra students are expanding their understanding of expressions, equations, and inequalities while strengthening their ability to represent and explain mathematical relationships. In Geometry, students are building from informal geometric explorations to formal definitions of rotations, reflections, and translations while using these concepts to analyze angles and distances and develop the reasoning skills needed for geometric proofs and future work with congruence.

We also want to remind families that strong organizational habits are an important part of success in mathematics. All students should bring their binder, which includes a math section, their planner and a pencil to class each day. All math courses assign weekly homework assignments, and we encourage students and families to make checking Schoology a regular part of their home routine. Reviewing Schoology together can help students stay aware of what assignments are due and when they are due. With consistent preparation, organization, and support from home and school, our students are well positioned to continue growing as confident and capable mathematicians.

English Language Arts

To start the year, all three grade levels are diving straight into the magic of storytelling. Over the next two months, students will explore how writers capture emotions and share human experiences. We will be reading and analyzing a rich variety of short stories, poetry, and personal narratives. To wrap up the unit, our students will become authors themselves as they draft, polish, and share their own personal narratives.

Students will be taking the STAR Reading assessment in their Language Arts classes this week or next. It is a quick, computer-based test that helps teachers understand each child’s reading level, plan appropriate instruction for them, and track their growth throughout the school year.

Science

Science coach class will be offered this year with the following schedule. If you plan to send your child before school, a permission slip is required and can be acquired from your child's teacher. Please see the schedule attached!

Social Studies

World History 6 – During September, students in World History 6 will learn about the relationship between people and geography as they investigate the impact that physical characteristics (environment) have on human characteristics (culture). This will provide students with the tools needed to learn about the world’s earliest humans and the shift from nomadic hunter-gatherers to sedentary farmers.

World History 7 – During September, students in World History 7 will learn about the roles and tools of various Social Scientists. Thinking as historians, economists, archaeologists, geographers, and political scientists, students will apply their knowledge to the study of growing empires throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa.

American History 8 – During September, students in American History 8 will develop an understanding for the definition and the purpose of history. As historians, Grade 8 students will apply disciplinary tools, including specific primary and secondary sources, to the study of the revolutionary period in early American history as well as to our book study of Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds. Students in our Advanced American History 8 classes will also be introduced to the National History Day project.

Special Areas

Physical Education

As students settle into their PE routines, please help ensure they come prepared for class. Students should wear or bring sneakers on PE days so they can fully participate in activities. Lockers have been assigned and should be used to secure personal belongings during class, including cell phones, binders, and other items. Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout their PE period.

Band & Strings

Our Band and Strings students are off to a great start this school year. Instrument drop-off and pick-up take place during homeroom and at the end of the school day, and students are expected to practice regularly at home to develop their musical skills. School-owned rental instruments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Families should return Instrument Loan Agreement forms as soon as possible, and no later than September 18. Renting through Menchey Music is also a great alternative. Students have begun learning instrument care, playing techniques, music theory fundamentals, and the collaboration skills necessary to perform as a unified ensemble. Additional information about after-school ensembles will be shared soon.

Visual Arts

Students in Visual Arts have already begun engaging in exciting and creative projects. Sixth grade Visual Arts students are designing sketchbooks while learning about symbolism, identity, and bookmaking techniques. Seventh grade students are creating palette paintings as they explore color schemes and mark-making techniques. Eighth grade students are focusing on still life drawing to strengthen their observational drawing skills and begin building work suitable for future high school portfolios. Eighth grade Visual Arts students are also welcome to bring a personal sketchbook if they would like to use one throughout the year.

Counseling Connection Counseling Connection

From Our Counseling Team

Throughout the month of September, our School Counseling Department will be visiting science classes to conduct introductory counseling lessons. During these lessons, students will complete the Matchmaker Career Assessment through Xello, an engaging tool that helps students explore their interests, identify potential career pathways, and begin setting future goals.

Students are encouraged to connect with their school counselor whenever they need support. Counselors are available to assist with academic concerns, social-emotional needs, peer relationships, and future planning. Students may request an appointment by sending a Schoology message to their counselor, visiting their counselor during lunch, or asking a teacher for a pass if they have an immediate concern or safety emergency.

We look forward to partnering with students and families to ensure every child feels supported, connected, and successful throughout the school year.

Attendance Matters! Every Student, Every Day!

At Parkville Middle, we maintain a critical focus on student attendance. We provide several tiered supports to recognize and celebrate student attendance, as well as identify gaps and provide resources for students who struggle with attendance. We hold regular attendance prize drawings during lunch shifts, engage in attendance homeroom competitions, and recognize students and homerooms during grade level town halls.

Be sure to reference the attendance notepad that was sent home with your child. There is information, an attendance tracker, and notes to use for when your child is absent, late, or dismissed early.

Safety Updates Safety Updates

Standard Response Protocol

For the safety of all students and staff, Baltimore County Public Schools utilizes the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation. This protocol uses clear, plain language rather than codes so that everyone can quickly understand and respond appropriately during an emergency.

Throughout the school year, students and staff may participate in drills or hear one of the following safety responses announced:

Hold means that hallways need to be cleared and everyone should remain in their current classroom or area. This response may be used for situations such as a medical emergency or a maintenance issue in the building.

Secure means that everyone remains safely inside the building and no one is permitted to enter. This response is used when there is a potential threat or hazard outside the school.

Lockdown means that doors are locked, lights are turned off, and individuals move out of sight. This response is used when there is a threat or hazard inside the building.

Evacuate means that students and staff move to a designated safe location. This response may be used during events such as a fire alarm, gas leak, or other situations requiring the building to be cleared.

Shelter refers to specific safety procedures used in response to weather-related emergencies or environmental hazards. Examples include tornadoes, hazardous material incidents, or earthquakes.

We are committed to maintaining a safe learning environment and will continue to practice these procedures throughout the year so that students and staff are prepared to respond calmly and effectively in the event of an emergency.

Emergency Drills

In alignment with BCPS requirements, the following emergency drills will be conducted during the 2026-27 school year. This schedule may be adjusted depending on weather and other factors. Lockdown drills will be communicated with the school community in advance.

September - 2 Fire Drills, Lockdown Scenario Drill

October - Fire Drill, Second Scenario Drill

November - 2 Fire Drills, Shelter Drill, Third Scenario Drill

December - Fire Drill, Severe Weather Drill

January - Fire Drill

February - Fire Drill

March - Fire Drill, Severe Weather Drill

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Stronger Together: Connect. Support. Prevent.

Suicide prevention is not one moment or one person's job. It lives in the relationships we build, the support we offer, and the communities we create together. This year's theme highlights the importance of:

· Strengthening connections that protect people before a crisis occurs

· Making sure everyone knows where to turn and knows it before they need it

· Building communities where people feel safe reaching out for help

· Supporting recovery and healing long after a crisis has ended

Suicide prevention touches every part of life – from families and schools to workplaces, faith communities, and health care systems. When people feel connected, valued, and supported, they are more likely to seek help. And when communities come together around a shared commitment to prevention, lives are saved.

The article below highlights things parents can to help suicide prevention.

Suicide Prevention: 12 Things Parents Can Do

Suicide Prevention: 12 Things Parents Can Do

As children grow and become more independent, it can be more challenging for parents to know what they are thinking and feeling. When do the normal ups and downs of adolescence become something to worry about?
