Kindness Month

Seems like time is flying! Second trimester ends this month and we start into the third trimester. We had our Sweethearts dance, and we have a few other fun things happening in February. Sources of Strength is running a Kindness campaign in February and March. Your students have an opportunity to earn a "Kindness Ticket" and enter a weekly raffle to win a prize if a staff member catches them doing something kind during the school day. On Valentines day the Sources of Strength club is hosting activities in a few classrooms during lunch time so everyone has something to do and nobody has to eat lunch alone. It will be a fun month and we hope everyone dives into our kindness campaign.

Esports Team

Blackfoot's Esports team is preparing for the start of the Idaho Esports Season February 20th. They will be competing in Super Smash Bros., Valorant, Rocket League, Overwatch 2 & League of Legends. The season will last about 3 months and will end with a district tournament & a chance to qualify to compete in the state tournament hosted in Boise by Boise State's Esports program. If you have a high school student that might be interested in joining a team, we are still recruiting & would love to have them join. Have them talk to Mr. Dunlap or contact him at dunlmori@d55.k12.id.us to learn more. Go E-Broncos!

BHS Clothes Closet

We are starting a clothes closet at BHS and are accepting donations of new and gently used clothing in all sizes. The purpose of the clothes closet is to make clothes available to students in need at BHS. We are collecting casual and interview-ready clothes. Please donate to our effort by dropping off new and gently used clothes (i.e. shirts, pants, shoes, socks, jackets, etc.) to Ms. Eldredge in rm. 110. Thank you for your help!

SCIENCE ROUND UP

Mrs. Wood: This is a fun time in our Ecology unit because we are studying Earth's systems.

There are a lot of ways that we can model these systems in class and it provides many

opportunities for students to be out of their seats working and discovering in a hands-on way.

It's always great to see the progress as we take such large concepts and break them down in

our classroom.

Mr. Pettinger: It is dissection season in Human A&P. Hands on is always preferred, when

teaching any Biology topic. We go from looking at pictures in a book to actually holding the

organ in our hands. During the nervous system unit we dissected a sheep brain. The first

dissection always brings out the curiosity and queasy stomachs. Our second dissection was a sheep eye. Comparing a sheep eye to a human eye truly gives students a deeper appreciation for vision. Coming up will be a sheep heart, to trace blood flow through a four chambered mammalian heart. This is my favorite part of Human A&P and quickly becomes many students favorite too.

Mr. Earley: Physical science students are learning the fundamental principles of the physical

world. In chemistry, students are balancing chemical equations to understand conservation of

matter. Chemistry students have developed custom projects to deepen their understanding.

One student prepared the same flan recipe twice changing the eggs for egg whites and

observed a significant change in the overall texture and stability of the flan without substantially

affecting the taste. In physics, students are learning how to measure kinetic energy in a 40 yard

dash. Physics students investigated momentum and Newton’s Laws of Motion by designing,

building, and testing a contraption that could protect an egg from a 2-story drop.

Career and Technical Education

Blackfoot High School is offering many high level business courses that allow students to succeed in future careers such as finance, marketing, graphic design and photography. These courses are in tandem with industry standards including Mircorsoft, Certiport, Stukent Marketing and Adobe Certifications. These courses are building eager entrepreneurs and business minded teens. That will boost the Blackfoot economy for years to come.

February is CTE month and we would like to honor and highlight all of the CTE Programs in our school. Business, Cabinet Making, Agriculture, Welding, Automotive Technology, Health Professions, and Family Consumer Sciences. We have organizations that are student affiliated in each- Business-BPA, Cabinet Making and Automotive --Skills, Agriculture-FFA, Health Professions-HOSA, Family Consumer Science -FCCLA. Each organization helps students become better in their skills while competing in various events. FCCLA will be having a District STAR event competition on Feb. 15 at ISU. Those students that perform well will go on to compete at the State level in April and possibly Nationals in July. Family Consumer Sciences have a variety of pathways to choose at Blackfoot High. They include Culinary, Early Childhood Professions, Education Assistant, and Hospitality and Tourism.

Business Professionals of America had their annual regional competition in December at the College of Eastern Idaho. They had a lot of success, placing in multiple events to qualify for the State competition in Boise on February 23-25. The following Business Professionals of America qualified for state. Laci Chandler placed 3rd in Word Processing. Emily Despain, Alivia Clapp, Maddy Despain, and Tanner Despain Placed 2nd in Small Business Management. CTE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS

This fall BHS started a new Career Technical Education (CTE) Photography Class, taught by Mrs. Christi Kotter. This class introduces students to the magnificent world of photography. Students explore many ways to take photographs using different kinds of cameras. The course ends with learning how to use a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera in manual mode like professional photographers use. Students enrolled in photography receive hours of one-on-one hands-on learning experience taking several photos indoors and outdoors. Students have really enjoyed this new addition to the CTE department and can look forward to an Advanced Photography class coming next school year.

Sources of Strength

BHS' Sources of Strength is a group of Teacher Advisors and Student Peer Leaders working together to plan school-wide campaigns that focus on messages of hope, help, and strength. This is our third year at BHS and we focus on the 8 strengths we have or have access to which are Positive Friends, Family Support, Mentors, Healthy Activities, Generosity, Spirituality, Physical Health, and Mental Health. We meet during club time and welcome everyone to join our club to plan and carry out positive campaigns at BHS. In addition to the club, we have an opt-in Sources of Strength class that takes a "deeper dive" into the strengths through discussion and projects. This is a great class and we encourage everyone to take it and learn more about the strengths we each have. If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Eldredge, BHS Dean of Students and Sources of Strength Coordinator.
