Wood End Wildcat News

Wood End WildcatNewsSeptember 9, 2025
What a wonderful week back at Wood End. We started by welcoming our youngest Wildcats- our kindergarteners to our community and ended with our Back to School Pizza Party on the field. We are all looking forward to our first full week of school!

PAWs PAWs

Throughout the year, you will see your students come home with PAWs.

Students who show our Core Values throughout the day may earn a PAW with some feedback on what they did and why they earned the PAW. This is an excellent reminder about the importance of being respectful, responsible, safe, honest, and engaged Wildcats!

Be sure to ask your student how they earned their PAW when they come home with one (or more)!

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT, SEPT 11

We are very excited to welcome our families (adults only) into our school September 11, 5:00-6:00PM for Open House. Teachers will be presenting information to families about the upcoming year following this schedule:

5:00 - 5:20

  • Session 1: Individual classroom teachers will be leading presentations about grade level curriculum.

5:20 - 5:40 : Intermission in the cafeteria--brief welcome presentation from Principal Schwartz and Assistant Principal Hester

5:40 -6:00

  • Session 2: Repeat of the previous session--> Individual classroom teachers will be leading presentations about grade level curriculum.

All caregivers are encouraged to attend the scheduled presentation times. The staggered schedule should allow for families with students in multiple grades to visit each child's classroom. Teachers will provide access to materials shared for all families who may be unable to attend. Please remember this is not a time to conference about your individual child. Conferences will take place in November and you are welcome to email your child’s teacher if you have concerns prior to that conference time.

Staff members will be available in the Main Lobby to assist families with locating classrooms and answering questions. We look forward to seeing our families on the 11th.

  2. Drivers STAY IN THE CAR and children exit on the sidewalk side of the car.

  • Please be sure you have your family placard easily visible on the RIGHT SIDE of your vehicle.
  • PLEASE REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLES

Caregiver Pick Up at door:

  • Kindergarten: Front of the building- Door 13
  • First Grade: Front right of the building- Door 12
  • Grades 2 and 3: Door 6 by the upper playground

Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds

As much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them, School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.

All five elementary schools in RPS dedicate a weekly 30-minute block to Social Emotional Learning (SEL). This year, with guidance from an RPS multidisciplinary curriculum team, we are excited to launch updated SEL lessons. This flier gives families a snapshot of what SEL looks like in grades K-5.

SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

Free School Meals for All Continues: We are excited to share that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has extended the Free School Meals for All program into another school year! This means that all students in grades K–12 will receive a free school breakfast and lunch every day, and our full-day Pre-K students will also receive a free lunch at no cost to families. Our Food & Nutrition Services team is thrilled for a new year with fresh menus and new offerings. Monthly menus are posted online, where families can also view allergens and nutrient information. Please note: newly enrolled students must register in our food service payment portal. The link can be found on the Food & Nutrition Services page or directly at LINQ Connect. For any questions or assistance, please contact Julianna Moccaldi or Catherine Franzetti.

PIN #s for Breakfast, Lunch, and purchasing snacks.

All Reading Public School students are assigned a PIN number that they must use to get breakfast, lunch, or snacks. Please help your child memorize their PIN number. Although we provide free breakfast and lunch to all students, we ask that families send in a healthy snack for their students each day.

It is also important for families that may need financial support including but not limted to our food services to complete the following forms on this page: https://www.schoolnutritionandfitness.com/index.php?sid=1701802399965&page=lunchapps

As a parent guardian of a child in the Reading Public Schools, you have access to the Parent PlusPortal. The Portal will be used throughout your child’s academic career as it is where you update your child’s emergency contact information, view report cards, and beyond elementary school, see your child’s grades in real time. It also acts as a communication portal between you and your child’s teacher where oftentimes, different academic links, notes, or activities are shared.

If you are a returning parent, your account is still active. If you are new parent guardian and have not received access, please reach out to our school administrative assistant, Lisa Finigan (lisa.finigan@reading.k12.ma.us). At that point, you will receive a separate email with your PlusPortal login information. The subject line of the email is Important! Wood End PlusPortals login. This is a confidential portal that is linked to your email account. You have 48 hours to activate your Portal account using the temporary password supplied through the email. Once you login, you can update the password and personal information.

Students need new medicine orders for each new school year. The summer is an ideal time to start this paperwork. Families can use this attached form for parent permission and doctor's orders. We also accept medication orders that a doctor writes on their own form. If you think your child would occasionally need Tylenol or Motrin, we need a doctor's order to give this in elementary school. For medicine safety, a parent or guardian needs to bring the medicine directly to the nurse to sign it into school. Please do not send medicines in their backpack.

Reading Public Schools is a METCO District

METCO unites suburban towns with Boston to engage in a reciprocal learning partnership in support of all students. Because of this, every child who attends school in Reading Public Schools is a METCO student and every parent or guardian who has a student in RPS is a part of the METCO community.

"Since its founding during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, the METCO program has enrolled tens of thousands of Boston students of color in predominately white school districts, creating the opportunity for those districts to experience the advantages of learning and working in a racially and ethnically diverse setting."
