Principals Message
Happy Monday Kellogg families!
This past week we had several Middle School student events at Kellogg. We hosted our annual Hispanic Heritage Month whole school pep assembly. We had student, staff and community performances, some fun student games, some music and a lot of laughs. We followed up with our monthly clubs hour. Our week was capped off with our annual Costume Ball for students and families.
This Week Events
- We need your participation: Our first community event for families is our Kellogg Trunk or Treat from 4:30-6:30 pm in the Kellogg Parking Lot on Wednesday evening. If you would like to sign up to participate you can do that here. If you can't sign up to bring your car and contribute, please just stop buy and grab some candy. Our event is for the whole community!
- There will be no school Thursday and Friday this week. Thursday is a teacher grading day and Friday is a teacher planning day.
Supporting Regular Attendance
Our attendance increased from 76% to 77% average daily attendance for this past week. About 23% of our students are missing school on a given day. Our data shows that about 12% of our students are at the chronic absenteeism level and about 10% are at the severe threshold.
- Chronic threshold absenteeism is defined as missing at least 10% of the total attendance dates. That is to say that if a student is chronically absent they have missed at least three days so far this year.
Board of Education Community Connection
There are two options to join the school board in conversations about potential closures and or reductions, one face to face at Lincoln High School and one Virtual:
1. Portland Public Schools invites students, families, educators and community members to join the Board of Education for a Community Connection this Tuesday at Lincoln High School.
- As PPS approaches the Superintendent's formal recommendation on Rightsizing, this is an important opportunity for school communities to connect directly with Board Directors and district leaders, ask questions and share their perspectives on the proposed scenarios.
- This informal gathering allows families to explore potential changes to schools, programs and student pathways while sharing what matters most to their students and communities.
- Whether you support aspects of Scenario A or B, prefer the current school configuration or have concerns about the proposals, we want to hear from you. Community perspectives remain an important part of the process as PPS prepares for the next phase of decision making.

☑️RSVP Here!
- Families are welcome to stop by at any point during the engagement. There is no need to attend for the full two hours.
- Parking and Transportation: Parking near Lincoln High School can be limited. Families are encouraged to allow additional time to find parking. Street parking and nearby public parking garages may be available. Public transportation is also an option, with MAX light rail and bus service nearby. Street parking recommendations.
2. Portland Public Schools invites students, families, educators and community members to join the Board of Education for a Virtual Community Connection this Wednesday evening.
- As PPS moves closer to the Superintendent's formal recommendation on Rightsizing, we want to ensure families and community members have opportunities to ask questions, share their perspectives and connect directly with Board Directors and district leaders.
- This virtual gathering provides an opportunity to discuss the proposed Rightsizing scenarios and share what potential changes to schools, programs and student pathways could mean for students and families.
- Whether you support aspects of the proposed scenarios, prefer the current school configuration or have concerns about the options being considered, your perspective matters.
- Families can participate from wherever they are and share what they want district leaders to consider before final decisions are made.

📍Virtual via Zoom | ⏰6:00pm - 8:00pm
☑️RSVP Here!
For more information about the proposed scenarios and upcoming opportunities to engage, visit the PPS Rightsizing webpage.
Village Table
Our school continues to have a voice in the districtwide Rightsizing conversation through the Village Table. The Village Table is the Superintendent's districtwide Site Council, bringing together two designated family representatives from each PPS school to engage with district information, share perspectives from their school communities and strengthen connections between families and district leadership. This is for Dr. Carpenter identified Village Table Representatives. There is a hybrid off site link that will be emailed to those that have conficts with attendance.
- As PPS approaches the Superintendent's formal Rightsizing recommendation on November 17th, our November gathering provides another opportunity for representatives to reflect on the proposed scenarios, ask questions and identify what matters most to their school communities.
- We encourage families to connect with their Village Table representatives and share the questions, experiences and priorities they want district leaders to consider.

Climate Project Ally
Help Students Bring a Climate Change Solution to Life!
Once again, this year, Kellogg students will get $10,000 from the Portland Clean Energy Fund to dream up and carry out a climate change solution for their school — and they get to decide what that solution will be! It could be a ... Bike Bus • Field Trip • Green School Yard • Pollinator Garden • Waste Reduction • Climate Policy Advocacy • And so much more!
In the past two years of funding, Kellogg students have explored local geology and wildlife, expanded outdoor learning opportunities, and taken action to better understand and reduce waste and its impact on their school community.
Now, we’re looking for a parent or caregiver to serve as a Climate Project Ally, working alongside teacher Kati Tobler and the student team. You'll help turn students' big ideas into reality by providing logistical support — getting supplies, communicating with partner organizations, budgeting & paperwork, and taking photos.
4–8 flexible hours/month • $1,000 stipend • Training and support from Eco-School Network
Check out the Climate Project Ally Role Description for details.
Interested? Contact hannah@ecoschoolnetwork.org to apply!

📣 Parent Volunteers Needed During Lunch!
We are looking for parent volunteers to help during both lunch periods. Your support helps us create a safe, positive, and welcoming environment for our students during lunchtime.
If you are available to volunteer during either lunch, we would greatly appreciate your help! Even a little time makes a big difference.

Thank you for supporting our school and our students!
SchoolPool
Kellogg is promoting a free carpooling web-based tool called SchoolPool to all PPS households. Carpooling with other families can ease traffic congestion during pick-up and drop-off, and provide options for kids who are not able to walk, bike or roll to school.
SchoolPool is part of Oregon Department of Transportation’s larger Get There program that helps Oregonians find alternatives to driving alone - including finding a carpool match. SchoolPool is only accessible to families that opt in and are verified through their school. This ensures that carpool matches are secure and are not a part of a general public carpool matching system. To join SchoolPool you must opt in through the link below.
Please carefully read all instructions as you set up your account. Or view step-by-step visual instructions here.
Here’s how to begin making connections with other families at your school:
- Follow this link to opt into SchoolPool: https://getthere.rideamigos.com/s/schoolpool-kellogg-bcg26
- Log in to your account, or create a new account.
- After entering your information - DO NOT “join your employer, organization or school network.” We’ve already done that for you, and your household will automatically be connected to your school.
- Read and acknowledge the disclaimer. Select “Enter the Get There SchoolPool system.”
- At the top of the page select the orange “school” button. Feel free to manage your household’s information, or select your School and see who is in your neighborhood and network.
Read more about SchoolPool on our web page: kellogg.pps.net/family-resources/schoolpool
For questions about SchoolPool contact your Network Manager: alcruz@pps.net
Kellogg Family Compact
We will be working on surveying families for input to the Kellogg Family Compact. We will work with our Site Council and PTSA to begin these conversations. Our hope is to have a new Family Compact for our November parent teacher conferences. This important document is an agreement between families and the Kellogg Community. All of this information is taken from the Family Guide.
The link provided here is last year's Family Compact for your review. This can provide a starting point for conversations about what we want our new Family Compact to look like.
Counselors' Corner
The Kellogg counseling staff will be using a digital appointment request this year for all student requests to meet with their counselor. If your student wishes to speak with their counselor, they must arrange an appointment by filling out their the counselor appointment google form.

- Big thanks to our amazing Science teachers for making ODS possible.
- 7th Graders had a 2-part counselor lesson this week on Mindful Reactions to Invitations. Students shared examples of verbal/nonverbal, intentional/unintentional invitations they experience during the school day.
- Ask your child what reacting to invitations means to them.
- 8th graders received a lesson on the importance of making decisions and getting to class on time.
- Ask your child about the tardy data shared by Ms. Scantling.
Connect with the Kellogg Social Worker
Hi Kellogg Families! If your child or family could use someone to talk to, support with school, or help connecting with resources, please reach out. You can use the Kellogg Social Worker Referral form to get in touch with me. I’m happy to listen and work together with you to find the support that feels right for you and your family.
School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
School traffic circulation maps are visual representations that outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around a school campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. These maps are designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.
Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.
Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.
Please do not pull into and wait for your student in the staff lot. We have buses that are on a schedule to pick up, drop off and run to other schools for the same process after their route at Kellogg.
Action Item

Message from PTSA
About those Blue Bags!
At Kellogg, BottleDrop is a year-round fundraiser. It raised $3,351 last school year!
This school year's fundraiser started on July 1, and so far we raised $728.43!
Our wonderful students will bring home a letter and a blue bag. You can bring bags back to the school or drop them off at a bottle drop location (there is one at Winco just down the street from Kellogg).
Please help us support our school with your bottles and cans. Every dime counts!
We are open to ideas and suggestions. bottledrop@kelloggmsptsa.org

REAP
REAP is Back!
REAP Reflections is back for the 2027 school year to support Kellogg Middle School students with behavior and academics.
What is REAP Reflections?
Reflections promotes a student’s right to equal access to education and is committed to fair policies that develop the framework for appropriate student behavior. The program provides proactive, targeted support through four main initiatives:
Mindful Moment Intervention: A Mindful Moment Intervention is designed to provide students a brief 10-30 minute support in moments of conflict using restorative activities and conversations.
Elevate: Elevate is an alternative to school (ISS). Students who are admitted into the program spend two full school days with REAP staff focusing on the combination of four aspects of the portion of Reflections, customized to the specific students in the program.
Restorative Discussions
Infractions Packet
Skill building exercises
In-School Assignments
“Fun Lunch” Incentive Program: Fun Lunch Program is an opportunity for students to engage with REAP staff and students who have demonstrated progress in their leadership and behavioral development.
Peer Mediation Program: Peer mediation is a leadership opportunity for youth who have come through the program or exhibited strong leadership and want to develop more.
The Genesis Project and the Porch
The Porch is a safe space for building community, relationships and to grab a good cup of coffee. The Porch has been an essential partner in their contribution to our school and community climate. Taylor gives of his time, his advice and his coffee.
The Genesis project is the core of the organization and while their movement is spiritual, their work is about building love and community. We have been lucky in having their support and providing people who want to make an impact on our community of students. This year we have added a new Genesis project partner, Morgan Albertson.
"Hello! My name is Morgan Albertson! I am the Next Gen Director at The Genesis Project, overseeing the kids and youth ministries! I got my college degree in Human Development and Family Studies, and have a passion from Trauma-Informed Care and mental health. I was born and raised in Colorado, and for fun I like to check out new coffee shops, cook, and be outdoors. A fun fact about me is I have trypophobia (the fear of holes). You will also often see me making coffee at The Porch, so come say hi and hang out!!"

Free Meals for All Students
Portland Public Schools Nutrition Services is happy to announce all students will be able to enjoy breakfast and lunch at no charge for the 2026-27 school year. One breakfast and one lunch will be provided to all students at no charge each day and families do not need to submit a free and reduced-price meal application.
Due to this change in services, our kitchen teams will no longer be able to take cash or check payments. If students bring their lunch from home and want milk, they must choose two other foods – such as a fruit and vegetable – at no charge. Milk can no longer be purchased separately.
Breakfast and lunch menus can be found on the PPS Nutrition Services website.

Schoolwide Expectations
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.
Bags and Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.
Key Contacts
Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, well-being, and learning are our top priorities. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have tight and busy schedules. Right before school, right after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
