Superintendent's May 2026 Update
Gill-Montague Regional School District
Honoring the Heart of Our Schools: A Month of Appreciation
As the flowers bloom and the school year begins its final stretch, the month of May offers us a special opportunity to pause and recognize the incredible individuals who make our district run. While we strive to show gratitude year-round, this month brings a series of national celebrations—Teacher Appreciation Week, School Nurse Day, School Lunch Hero Day, and School Principals' Day—that allow us to shine a bright light on our dedicated staff.
In our district, we have shifted our focus to "doing what matters most." There is nothing more essential to a student's success than the community of adults who support, nourish, and inspire them every single day.
Our Educators: The Architects of the Future
Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4–8) Our teachers are the frontline of our "essential learning" mission. They have embraced the challenge of narrowing our focus to ensure every student masters the skills necessary for the modern world. They aren't just delivering curriculum; they are building relationships, sparking curiosity, and fostering resilience.
Our Principals: The Visionary Leaders
National School Principals' Day (May 1) A school is a reflection of its leadership. Our principals are the steady hands guiding our shift toward a more focused, impactful educational model. They balance the complexities of administration with the heart of mentorship, ensuring that every building is a safe, productive environment for growth.
Our School Nurses: The Pillars of Wellness
School Nurse Day (May 6) We cannot focus on "what matters most" in the classroom if our students aren't healthy and ready to learn. Our nurses are more than healthcare providers; they are advocates, listeners, and first responders who keep our school community safe and thriving.
Our Food Service Staff: The Fuel for Success
School Lunch Hero Day (May 1) Often arriving before the sun rises, our food service team ensures that every child has access to nutritious meals. They provide the literal fuel that allows our students to concentrate on their MCAS prep and their daily lessons. A hungry child cannot learn, and our "School Lunch Heroes" make sure that never happens.
When we talk about shifting our focus to the essentials, we are really talking about the people who deliver those essentials. Our staff members are the backbone of this district. This May, I encourage every student and parent to take a moment to say 'thank you.' A simple note or a kind word can mean the world to someone who pours their heart into our children.
How You Can Participate
Write a "Power Note": Encourage your student to write a quick note to a staff member about one "essential" lesson or moment that impacted them this year.
Share a Story: Post a shout-out on social media using our district hashtag to highlight a staff member who went above and beyond.
Say It in Person: A heartfelt "thank you" in the hallway or the drop-off line goes a long way.
To our teachers, principals, nurses, and food service staff: Thank you for doing what matters most. You are the reason our students are prepared for the future.
Fresh Flavors!
Students at Gill Elementary School and throughout the GMRSD are fueling their learning with a vibrant array of healthy choices, thanks to our dedicated food service team.
Every day, the kitchen staff prepares a diverse selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, ensuring that students have access to high-quality, nutritious options alongside their meals. By prioritizing variety and freshness, the team is helping our students develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.
A big thank you to our lunch team for their hard work in keeping our students healthy and ready to learn!
Spring MCAS Testing in Mathematics & Science, Tech & Engineering
Focusing on What Matters: A New Chapter for Our Schools
As we approach the upcoming Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) in mathematics this month, our district is at a pivotal crossroads. We know that for many, "testing season" brings a mix of anxiety and fatigue. However, this year feels different. We are shifting our strategy from trying to "do everything" to focusing on what matters most—the essential skills our students need to thrive in 2026 and beyond.
Quality Over Quantity
In the past, we’ve often fallen into the trap of the "everything model," spreading our resources thin and overwhelming both teachers and students. We are changing that. By adopting a "Doing What is Essential" framework, we are prioritizing deep understanding, critical thinking, and real-world application over rote memorization.
The MCAS is not just a hurdle to jump; it is a vital diagnostic tool that helps us see if this new focus is working. It provides the data we need to ensure that no student—and no classroom—is being left behind.
Why Giving Our Best Matters
For an underperforming district, the MCAS is often viewed as a "judgment." We want to flip that narrative. This test is an opportunity to showcase our growth. When students give their all, they aren't just filling in bubbles; they are providing us with a roadmap for their future.
Equity and Access: The MCAS ensures that we are held accountable for providing the same high-quality education to our students as the wealthiest districts in the state.
Targeted Support: High-quality data allows us to pour resources exactly where they are needed, moving us away from "guesswork" and toward "precision teaching."
Building Resilience: Taking a challenge seriously and putting in maximum effort is a life skill that transcends any classroom wall.
The Power of "Giving It Your All"
We are asking our students to bring their best effort—not because a score defines their worth, but because their effort defines their potential. In this "day and age," the ability to focus, analyze complex information, and persevere through a challenge is more essential than ever.
"We are no longer practicing for the test; we are practicing for a future that demands excellence in the essentials."
How Families Can Help
Success on the MCAS is a community effort. You can support your student by:
Emphasizing Effort: Remind them that the goal is to show what they know, not to be perfect.
Maintaining Routine: Ensure they get plenty of rest and a solid breakfast during testing weeks.
Staying Positive: Your attitude toward the assessment sets the tone for their confidence.
By narrowing our focus to what is truly essential, we are clearing the path for our students to succeed. Let’s show the Commonwealth what our district is truly capable of when we focus on what matters most.
Making a Splash: TFHS Students Begin Lifeguard Certification Journey
Great things happen when community and opportunity meet! We are thrilled to announce a new partnership between the Greenfield YMCA and Turners Falls High School, bringing a professional Lifeguard Certification Program directly to our students.
This initiative is a key part of our student enrichment programming, made possible through a generous grant. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dianne Ellis for her hard work and dedication in securing this funding, which removes financial barriers and opens doors for our students to gain high-level, employable skills.
A Challenging Start
The road to becoming a lifeguard is a rigorous one. Today, candidates faced their first major hurdle: a challenging swim test designed to ensure they have the physical stamina and skill required for the training ahead.
We are incredibly proud to report that our students rose to the occasion, with everyone in the group successfully passing the test! Qualifying for this program is no small feat—it requires strength, focus, and perseverance.
Essential Skills for the Future
Programs like this provide our students with much more than just a summer job opportunity. Through this certification, they are gaining:
Critical Responsibility: Learning to stay calm and lead in emergency situations.
Professional Credentials: Earning a recognized certification that is in high demand across the region.
Community Safety: Preparing the next generation to keep our local pools and waterfronts safe.
Congratulations to all the students who qualified...including Principal Messina! We look forward to seeing you complete your training and dive into this rewarding field.
A Paw-some Celebration: Happy 2nd Birthday, Everest!
The hallways of Sheffield Elementary were buzzing with extra excitement recently as students and staff gathered to celebrate a very special milestone: Everest’s second birthday!
Our beloved facility dog has become an essential part of our school community, and the students made sure his big day was one to remember. The festivities kicked off with a burst of creativity as students channeled their inner artists to decorate custom party hats, layering them with vibrant colors to match the joyful mood.
Once the masterpieces were complete, students took turns posing for photos with the guest of honor, capturing wonderful memories of the celebration. To top off the event, Everest "handed out" freeze pop treats to every student, ensuring everyone had a sweet end to the day.
Happy Birthday, Everest! Thank you for bringing so many smiles and so much comfort to our Sheffield family every day.
Looking Ahead: Important Calendar Updates
As we move into the final weeks of the school year, we want to ensure all families have the most accurate information for their planning. Please take note of the following updates regarding the end of this year and the start of the next.
Wrap-Up for 2025-2026
The final stretch is here! The last day of school for students will be Wednesday, June 17. We are looking forward to finishing the year strong and celebrating the hard work our students and staff have put in over the last several months. Monday 6/15, Tuesday, 6/16 and Wednesday 6/17 are also half days for students.
2026-2027 District Calendar (Updated)
We are also officially sharing the 2026-2027 School Year Calendar.
Please be aware that a previous draft of this calendar incorrectly listed the date for Memorial Day. We have corrected this error to ensure families can plan their spring schedules accurately. Memorial Day 2027 will be observed on Monday, May 31, and there will be no school on that day.
You can download the full, corrected version of the 2026-2027 calendar below or on the district website under the "Family Resources" tab. Thank you for your patience as we finalized these details!
Diamond Memories: TFHS Baseball Visits Cooperstown
Our Turners Falls High School Baseball team recently returned from an unforgettable trip to the historic "birthplace of baseball"—Cooperstown, New York.
The team took to the diamond at Doubleday Field, showcasing incredible grit and sportsmanship in a series of competitive games. Beyond the scoreboard, the trip was a masterclass in baseball history. The players visited the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, where they explored the legacy of the game’s greatest legends and walked through the iconic Plaque Gallery.
This trip was a unique opportunity for our student-athletes to bond as a team while connecting with the deep traditions of the sport. Congratulations to our players and coaches for representing Gill-Montague with such pride on and off the field!
Building Our Future: Sheffield and Hillcrest Enter MSBA Eligibility Period
We are excited to share a major milestone in our commitment to providing modern, safe, and effective learning environments for our students. As of May 1st, the Gill-Montague Regional School District has officially entered the Eligibility Period with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for the Sheffield and Hillcrest Schools project.
This invitation is the first formal step in a multi-year partnership with the state to address the facility needs of our elementary schools. Being invited into this period is a significant achievement, as the MSBA Core Program is highly competitive and based on a rigorous review of our district's needs.
What is the Eligibility Period?
The Eligibility Period is a 270-day window during which our district must complete several critical "prerequisites." Think of this as the foundation-building phase. By completing these tasks, we demonstrate to the state that our district is ready—both financially and organizationally—to manage a large-scale construction or renovation project.
The 270-Day Roadmap: Key Deliverables
Over the next nine months, the district will work diligently to submit several technical and community-focused deliverables required by the MSBA. These include:
Initial Compliance Certification: A formal agreement that the district understands and will follow all MSBA rules and regulations.
School Building Committee (SBC) Formation: We will establish a dedicated committee of local officials, educators, and community members to oversee the project. The Town of Montague Selectboard will appoint members.
Educational Profile Questionnaire: A detailed look at our current teaching model and how a new or renovated facility will support our students’ "essential" learning needs.
Enrollment Projections: Collaborating with the MSBA to agree on long-term student population numbers to ensure the building is sized correctly for the future.
Maintenance and Capital Planning Information: Documentation showing our commitment to maintaining our current and future facilities.
Local Funding Authorization: The community will eventually be asked to vote on the funding for a Feasibility Study, which is the next major phase of the process.
Why This Matters Now
Entering the Eligibility Period on May 1st puts us on a clear path. While the actual "shovels in the ground" are still several years away, the work we do in these first 270 days ensures that we maximize the state's financial contribution to the project.
This process is about more than just bricks and mortar; it's about creating a space that aligns with our shift toward doing what matters most for our students—providing them with the technology, safety, and flexible learning spaces they deserve in this day and age.
Stay Tuned: We will be providing regular updates and opportunities for community input as the School Building Committee begins its work. If you are interested in joining the building committee, please send a Letter of Interest to the GMRSD School Committee via tara.mccarthy@gmrsd.org. We are building the future of Gill-Montague together!
Catching the Sun: The Art and Science of Solargraphy
Ever wonder what the path of the sun looks like over weeks or even months? Our students have been busy finding out in Ms. Charles' class! Please take a peek at the incredible results of their recent pinhole camera project.
While it looks like magic, this process is actually a fascinating scientific technique called solargraphy.
What is Solargraphy?
Solargraphy is a form of ultra-long exposure photography. Unlike a standard camera that takes a picture in a fraction of a second, these pinhole cameras were left out to record the world over a vast period of time.
Using simple containers transformed into cameras, light-sensitive photographic paper recorded the sun’s daily arc across the sky. The results are stunning:
Glowing Trails: Each line represents the sun’s path on a single day.
The "Gaps": You’ll notice breaks in the glowing lines—these are the moments when cloud cover hid the sun from the camera’s view.
Doing What is Essential: Hands-On Discovery
By building these cameras from scratch, our students moved beyond textbooks to see the rotation of our earth and the changing of the seasons in one single frame. It is a perfect blend of art, patience, and solar science.
Take a look below at the process of setting up our cameras and the hauntingly beautiful images they produced!

Building Bridges: Middle and High School Students Visit Sheffield
A huge thank you to our Great Falls Middle School (GFMS) and Turners Falls High School (TFHS) students for visiting Sheffield Elementary recently to inspire our younger learners!
Accompanied by Assistant Principal Graves, Officer Miner, and Mack, these student leaders spent time in our Grade 2, 4, and 5 classrooms. Our elementary students were absolutely captivated as the visitors shared wonderful stories and provided an "insider's look" into the world of middle and high school academics, sports, and activities.
From Reading to Recreation
The excitement moved from the classroom to the playground as the group headed outside to join our 3rd Graders for recess. The highlight of the afternoon was an epic matchup on the courts—hosting what might have been the largest game of Gaga Ball in school history!
Why Community Connections Matter
These visits are about more than just a fun afternoon; they are essential for:
Peer Mentorship: Allowing younger students to see positive role models in action.
Ease of Transition: Helping elementary students feel excited and prepared for their future at GFMS and TFHS.
District Unity: Strengthening the bonds between our schools and our local community.
We are so grateful for these connections that give our students a glimpse into their bright futures. Thank you to everyone involved for making this day so incredibly memorable!
We Welcome Our New Staff to GMRSD!
Welcome! We are glad you are here, adding a different perspective and new optimism to our mission to prepare every single one of our students, exceedingly well, for higher learning in the 21st century.
