A-Z about a Programmer's Journey
I-Week 2015 Head of Programme Department
Intro to our Hero
Mr. Lim Kin Chun is an undergraduate Accounting student at the University of Malaya. He is currently doing his third year studies. He is from Penang. For your information, Mr. Kin Chun is a very active member of UMAC. In other words, he actively indulges himself in conducting and directing programs and events of UMAC. During our sharing session with him, he said that he was introduced to UMAC during the I-Week or interaction week conducted for the first-year Accounting students in the University of Malaya. He added that his first impression about UMAC events are actually based on the way of conducting the events which is packed and tightly-scheduled.
First step into Umac
Mr. Kin Chun started his involvement in UMAC as a Programmer for MASC 2014. Reason for his choice of being a Programmer, is that he is comfortable and can bring in good participation and aptness in Programme Department. Having a review on the job scope of Programme Department, he realized that it is something related with him. The job scope which includes creating gimmicks, brainstorming ideas for games and being a runner of the event is his interest. He also had past experiences of doing those things. Therefore, he personally thinks that these attributes are the reasons which led him towards this choice. At first, Mr. Kin Chun was not aware of the difficulties wrapped up in the works of Programmer Department until his seniors explained it to him. However, he still stood there strong not regretting upon his choice, but was getting ready to accept any difficulties that he is going to face.
Source of inspiration
no pain no gain!
commitment + sincerity + hardwork = success
kickstart as an HOd
He was chosen as the Head of Programme Department during I-Week 2015. Here, Mr. Kin Chun was very delighted and made a very big success. With the experience of being a junior executive and later on as a Head of Department has taught him some good skills. He explained the job segregation of a normal member and Head of Department during our sharing session. He described that a junior member actually just has to follow the works scheduled and commands ordered by the Head of Department. However, the situation is totally different in the case of a Head of Department. Being a Head of Department, one has to brainstorm ideas to prepare the tasks for the department members, be clear and precise about instructions to deliver and to have patience in teaching the new members. However, being a Head of Department, the leadership skills also comes into action. According to Mr. Kin Chun, he is strict and firm when it comes to work. He added that he respects his fellow members equally and create a strong understanding and bonding in order to achieve the success of the event. At first, he will be strict to show and teach the members to give their commitment and teamwork continuously towards the given work. Once they understand his work style, then he will be more lenient towards his members as they already taught to do the necessary things.
Room for improvement?
Mr. Kin Chun has something to suggest based on his expectations. He hopes that there should be necessary improvements in the way programme executives create the gimmicks and games and other activities. Based on his view, there is a constant trend in doing the gimmicks that are copied from the seniors past work piece of gimmicks. So, he suggested that UMACians should join other events that are not held by UMAC so that they can discover new ideas of conducting events that can be applied in UMAC events. In other words, UMACians have to be innovative in creating new aspects of conducting events that are applicable. However, the creditable and admirable values from the seniors should be applied as well and not neglected
