Work Based Learning Update

Career Day

On Thursday morning, October 26, Webutuck High School hosted a Career Fair for our students. Twenty six local professionals presented and spoke with students during multiple sessions over a two hour period. The following are some of the professions that were represented:

  • Architecture
  • Nursing and Healthcare
  • Banking and Finance
  • Veterinary Sciences
  • Fashion and Design
  • Law and Law Enforcement
  • Industrial Manufacturing

Work Based Learning: Program Growth

In 2022-23 Webutuck High School had six (6) students participating in one (1) program in grades 9-12. This year we have a total of fifty one (51) students in four (4) programs. In addition to adding three new programs, the Work-Based Learning Coordinator, Mr. Scarinzi met with Mr. Knuschke and Mr. Pascale to discuss adding the 8th grade to the Work Based Learning Program. The following are the programs and the number of students currently participating:

  • Career Exploration - 22 students
  • 8th Grade Life Skills - 12 students
  • Senior Work Experience - 6 students
  • Special Ed. Work Based Learning - 11 students

Our goal is to increase participation in Work Based Learning each school year until every student has some level of experience in the program.

What Our Students are Thinking

In Ms. Fisher's Creative Writing class, students had to write a tiny memoir in just 100 words. The tiny memoir had to be a short, powerful, true story about a meaningful experience from the students' lives.

“Writer’s Block”

By Gabriela Arteaga, 10th grade

Holding the pencil and sketchbook, I could feel the tears prick my eyes. My face scrunched and contorted; my vision going watery. A voice of doubt whispered, “It won't amount to anything.” My lips tightened, keeping back the sobs, and I set my pencil on the blank canvas. Still, a chord inside me snapped. Loud wails escaped my mouth as massive tears slid down my cheeks. Every drop of frustration went onto the paper. My pencil glided across the piece, etching in a message of doom. And yet, a warmth bloomed in my chest. This was my work of art.

Two of WHS's seniors were asked to share their thoughts on something positive they noticed about their school. Here is what they said.

"School Lunch"

by JoAnna Voigt and Reghan Swift

School lunch has improved significantly since the arrival of our new chef Dan Trotter! The food is tastier, fresher, and more diverse. We have a wider variety of options, including healthier choices and special dietary accommodations. It's like having a restaurant experience every day! Dan brings creativity and passion to the menu, making lunchtime something to look forward to. He also talks to many of the students on a personal level, going out of his way to bring special dishes to some students. It’s not just a lunch anymore, students actually consider it a meal. Now with lunch being free again, the number of students getting this improved free lunch is seen by not just staff but also the students.

What's Happening in Our Classrooms?

From Our Science Department.....

Food Science:

In Food Science students are currently examining the nutritional content of our food. Students explored how we can release, capture, and measure the amount of Calories in several food items using a simple calorimeter. Below you can see Eric Golden lighting a tortilla chip on fire so we can break those chemical bonds in the food through combustion. That energy stored in the food will be transferred into the water in the can as thermal energy. Students measured the change in temperature and calculated how many Calories per gram are contained in the foods they were testing. (Special thanks to our resident student fire department volunteer Joseph Bartlett for ensuring proper ventilation to avoid any unscheduled fire drills :)

Environmental Science:

Students in our new Environmental Science elective are being asked to take ownership of their learning during Free Choice Fridays. Students are able to choose the path that they would like to take and explore environmental science topics meaningful to them. The goal is for students to complete an original research project that can be shared with the community at the Webutuck STEAM Fair. Students are also assisting with the recycling program at the high school. Teams of students collect the recyclables from each classroom and separate returnables from recyclables. The goal is to build sustainable habits that will extend beyond their school years.

Earth Science:

In Earth Science students are observing and analyzing models and simulations of the formation of the stars and planets. Using the data collected from the simulations the students then formed their hypothesis on what the planets are made of. In lab the students are modeling planetary orbits by drawing ellipses, calculating their eccentricity and comparing the data they collected to the data on planetary orbits using their real life data found in their Earth Science Reference Table (ESRT).

Exercise and Mental Well-Being

For many years researchers in the healthcare fields have reported the positive effects that physical exercise has on the human brain. Below is a link to an online article that details the benefits of exercise on mental health and performance in school.
