American Education Week begins today. This week has been a time-honored tradition in the United States since 1921. It started after World War I, when 25% of the country's draftees were illiterate. The week spotlights public education and the critical partnership among educators, parents, and the community to ensure that every child receives an excellent education.
Two of this week's most significant events are National Family Day on Tuesday, November 18th, and Substitute Educators Day on Friday, November 21st.
National Family Day, formerly called National Parental Involvement Day,
encourages parents to visit their child's classroom, volunteer, join a booster club, or join the campus Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to further connect with their child's teacher and the campus culture. We have terrific partnerships with our Booster Clubs, PTOs, volunteers, and mentors. When parents and educators work together, it provides helpful insights into a child's learning and needs.
On Friday, we're also celebrating our dedicated substitute staff. Substitutes play a vital role in supporting learning and keeping our campuses running smoothly. Whether they're leading a classroom, assisting in the front office, or stepping in wherever they're needed, substitute educators ensure students continue to learn and thrive. One of the great benefits of serving as a substitute is the flexibility to choose when and where to work. To learn more about becoming a substitute in our district, visit our website.
As we continue recognizing American Education Week, we're reminded that it takes all of us, teachers, families, staff, and community partners, to support our students. By working together, we help build a strong, confident learner. That's something worth celebrating.
